1. وافى فهز من القوام مثقفاً

    ورنا فسل من اللواحظ مرهفا

    He came swaying, an elegant man

    Warbling, asking from the glances, perceptive

  2. ثمل القوام كأن رقة جسمه

    ماء صفا وفؤاده مثل الصفا

    The sway of his body as if its delicacy

    Is pure water, and his heart like purity

  3. يحبو الغزال بجيده وبلحظه

    والغصن يمنحه القوام الأهيفا

    He charms the gazelle with his cheek and his glance

    And the branch grants him graceful leaning

  4. يا عطفه كيف الملاذ بعطفه

    هلا تعلم منك أن يتعطفا

    Oh his kindness! How can I find refuge in his kindness

    If only you would learn from him to show kindness

  5. متدلل خلف الحمام وعيده

    وعد الوصال أخا الحياة فأخلفا

    Pampered behind the pigeons and their cooing

    The promise of union, brother of life yet he broke it

  6. هو يوسف يقضي على يعقوبه

    ظلماً فعدل لو قضيت تأسفا

    He is Joseph sentencing his Jacob

    Unjustly, so it would be just if you lamented

  7. جد بالشفاء لعاشق أسقمته

    يمسى ويصبح من هواك على شفا

    Seek healing for a lover whom love has made ill

    Who spends night and day in passionate longing for you

  8. ودع الصدود فما أطيق زيادة

    عندي من الوجد المبرح ما كفى

    Leave off disdain, for I cannot bear more

    Than the fervent love I already have, and it suffices

  9. يا مانحي طرفاً لقلبي خاطفاً

    ومقبلاً خصراً وخصراً مخطفا

    Oh you who glanced at my heart fleetingly

    And met my waist with your waist repeatedly

  10. ما الخال نقطة نون صدغاك إنما

    قلبي بحبته حباه تلهفا

    The moles are but dots, the nun on your cheek

    Yet my heart in its love interpreted them enthusiastically

  11. وكذا عذارك إنما صدغاك قد

    كتبا على مرآة وجهك أحرفا

    As did your bashfulness, for the moles on your cheek

    Wrote letters on the mirror of your face

  12. زهر وللزهر حياة من الحيا

    تجنيه من نار الحياء مفوفا

    A blossom that has a life from life

    That you pluck from the fire of shyness, bundled

  13. فتعد عن عذلي بليت بحبه

    وحباك سالفه الغرام وسلفا

    So excuse my weakness, for I have been afflicted by love for you

    And loving you was my former and latter folly

  14. أوبت من قلق كما باتت عدى

    الملك المظفر من سطاه على الشفا

    I tossed sleeplessly as the victorious king spent the night sleepless

    From the high ground looking out for enemies

  15. ذي السعي تلقاه مسيحاً للعلى

    للمال مذ خلقت يداه متلفا

    He whose striving has found him the Messiah of the Exalted

    For wealth, since his hands created it only to destroy it

  16. متأيد حلماً فإن عرضت له

    فرص السماح فما أغذ وأوجفا

    Aided by resolve from which no weakness can be claimed

    And an opinion from which no folly can be claimed

  17. اعطى على عدم وقد ضن الحيا

    ووفى على مضض وقد غاض الوفا

    So to God belongs forgiveness, sounder than our hopes

    A body that was delicate and feet that walked gently

  18. كم منية أهدى وذي زيغ هدى

    وحشاشة أحيا ومال أتلفا

    You were gentle as the fresh water in its course

    And described wellsprings that give life if they flow

  19. يعطيك عفواً أو يسامح مذنباً

    عفواً إذا غضب الكريم وسوفا

    From his night talk the fresh water in its course is depleted

    And described are my wellsprings of comfort like purity

  20. جود وحلم لا تؤبن بعده

    لا بل تؤنب حاتماً والأحنفا

    In peace it is water, and in war it is fire

    Death woven into life there cleverly

  21. نيطاً بعزم لا يقال له ونى

    خوراً ورأي لا يقال له هفا

    From his palm a sea and from his sword hilt a blaze

    To God - however did they come together!

  22. فلله السماح أصح من آمالنا

    جسماً وقدماً كان نضواً مدنفا

    Do not deny the shuddering of every deaf spear

    That flowed, making its state easier to shudder

  23. لطفت كما لطف الزلال خلاله

    وصفت موارد إذا يسطو حياة إن عفا

    As too the shivering of every sharp rage

    In his hands, undone by the blows and made slender

  24. من سمره ينضب الزلال خلاله

    وصفت موارد راحتيه كما صفا

    The outcome of this: their skulls will be made to fly

    And the goal of that: their bodies made to crumble

  25. في السلم ماء وهي نار في الوغى

    موت كما تلفى الحياة به لفا

    Do not forget our dread and descent of its cliff

    While the atmosphere wore the mask and was covered

  26. من كفه بحر وشعلة قابس

    صمصامه لله كيف تألفا

    For leaning on it one day, soaking it with their blood

    Not like winter - and it was a summer day

  27. لا تنكرن رجفان كل أصم عس

    سال فأيسر حاله أن يرجفا

    I witnessed him and so witnessed that he

    Is a king and a beast - neither hosting nor hosted

  28. وكذاك رعدة كل غضب صارم

    بيديه أنحله الضراب وأنحفا

    It was not feeble fleeing or withdrawing

    In him, but harsher and more skilled

  29. فمآل هذا أن يطير بهامهم

    قصداً وغاية ذاك أن يتقصفا

    They stood firm as the mountains of Tihama stood firm

    Until it carried them - so who can withstand pausing?

  30. لا تنس رعباناً ونازل سفحها

    والجو قد لبس النقاب وأغدفا

    How many concerns in war that left him

    Bereft with ruin on open ground

  31. لثناه يوماً شاتياً بدمائهم

    لا كالشتاء وكان يوماً صيفا

    And afflictions that the wind of havoc blew away

    I faced, preventing them from wreaking havoc

  32. شاهدته فشهدت فيه أنه

    ملكاً ووحش فلا أضاف وضيفا

    Behind the mighty King Yusuf, Yusuf

    And behind you, mighty one of Egypt, Yusuf

  33. ما كان أنزر هارباً مولياً

    فيه وأكثر صارماً ومثقفا

    So the sun and the shining full moon succeeded them

    Star of guidance - and no deficiency dims a star

  34. ثبتوا كما ثبتت جبال تهامة

    حتى حملت فمن أطاق توقفا

    Warrior of the word of scripture, his sword

    Inspires awe and justice - we are confident no fear

  35. كم مهمه في الحرب أصبح أهلاً

    غادرته بالجرب قاعاً صفصفا

    Why would religion fear spuriousness after

    The sword befriended it and the scripture?

  36. وملمة عصفت بريح زعزع

    عاجلتها فمنعتها أن تعصفا

    How much proposal came to me, yet I refused

    And prevented its imposing onset from oveturning affairs

  37. خلف الملك العزيز يوسف يوسفاً

    وخلفت أنت عزيز مصر يوسفا

    You are the illuminator, and I am saying

    We both envy what is pursued and emulated

  38. فالشمس والبدر المنير تلاهما

    نجم الهدى والنجم ليس به خفا

    So delight an innocent maiden, easiest of proposals

    Not of a cure that comes forth and chisels

  39. جار على كم الكتاب حسامه

    بأساً وعدلاً آمنا أن خوفا

    The calamity came to you turbulent, and the best

    Eulogy is that which met the skull turbulent

  40. أنى يخاف الدين زيفاً بعدما

    تخذ الحسام جليسه والمصحفا

    She was led to the most high king, her leading

    The king of meanings, gentleness, and refinement

  41. كم نالني خطب فللت شباته

    ومنعت نازل نابه أن يصرفا

    A full moon so there is no nonsense

    Of eclipse dimming a sun and God protected it from darkening

  42. أنت المجلي والذي أنا قائل

    كل على حسد يؤم ويقتفى

  43. فاستجلها عذراء أيسر خطبها

    ما عن طب أن تصدر وتصدفا

  44. جابت إليك البيد موجفة وخير

    المدح ما جاب المهامه موجفا

  45. زفت إلى الملك العالي زفها

    ملك المعاني رقة وتلطفا

  46. بدر فلا عبث الخسوف

    بتمه شمس وقاها الله من أن تكسفا
