1. أتهويماً وليلُ الهمّ داجي

    فهاتِ من السّلاف سنا سراج

    I rave in anguish, while the night of worries is pitch black,

    So bring from the wine-bearer a light to illuminate our drinking.

  2. وأطلعْ بالسّقاة بدورَ تمٍّ

    تدير الشمس في صبح الزجاج

    And call to the cupbearers in the darkest hours of night,

    As the sun revolves in the dawn gleaming like glass.

  3. ونصلها رماحاً من شموعٍ

    لوامعَ تحتَ راياتِ الدياجي

    We drink it in handfuls like candles,

    Gleaming banners beneath the cover of darkness.

  4. ولو ركبتْ لتقنص الأماني

    بنان يدٍ تسالم في الهياج

    If the fingers of a hand extended in greeting

    Were to ride out to hunt wishes,

  5. تجيدُ الضربَ لكن في مقامٍ

    دخانُ كبائهِ وهجُ العجاج

    It would excel in fighting, but in a state

    Of smoky dreams and glowing embers.

  6. بكى الراووقُ مرجاناً نثيراً

    ونظّم لؤلؤاً ضحكُ المزاج

    The reciter wept copious pearls

    And strung together a necklace of chuckling pleasure.

  7. فقد نسجَ الحيا حبراً وحلّى

    بدرّ النّور أجيادَ الفجاج

    For he wove silk with ink and sweetened it

    With full moons of shining light.

  8. وأرشفها ثغوراً من أقاحٍ

    صوامتَ وهيَ مفصحةُ التناجي

    He furnished it with the most wondrous of meadows,

    Silent yet eloquently intimate.

  9. كأنَّ الأرض وجهٌ من حبيبٍ

    تبلّج عن سرورٍ وابتهاج

    As if the earth were the face of a beloved

    Beaming with joy and delight.

  10. وشمسُ الدجن ترشفُ من رضاب الـ

    ـغوادي كلَّ معسول المجاج

    The sun of nightfall peers out from behind the dunes

    Sweet as ripe fruit.

  11. وأغيدَ فاتنِ الحركات يسطو

    بادعجَ فاترِ اللحظات ساجي

    The graceful beauty sways,

    Languid in her glances, provoking passion.

  12. يتيه بوجنةٍ كالورد حسناً

    يحيط بها عذارٌ كالسياج

    She wanders lost in a cheek as rosy as a rose,

    Encircled by a fence like a barricade.

  13. كما نمنمتَ خطّاً ذا خفاءٍ

    على سطحينِ من ذهبٍ وعاج

    As you have inscribed with invisible script

    Upon two tablets of gold and ivory.

  14. وجسمٍ حسمُ داء الهمِّ فيهِ

    إذا ما ألهمُّ جلَّ عن العلاج

    And a figure that alleviates the pain of cares

    Whenever cares cease to torment me.

  15. فغصنُ البان منه في اهتزاز

    ودعص الرمل منه في ارتجاج

    For its bent branch of acacia tremors

    And its sandy slope quivers.

  16. ونقطة خالهِ والصدغُ نونٌ

    تروقكَ بانفرادٍ وازدواج

    The mole on her cheek is a noon letter nun

    Which pleases in its solitude and duplication.

  17. كأنَّ الليل قبّلَ خدَّ صبحٍ

    فأثّر حسن ذاك الامتزاج

    As if the night had kissed the cheek of dawn

    Imprinting the beauty of that union.

  18. وإن خفنا سطى الحدثان عجناً

    من الملك العزيز إلى معاج

    And if we conceal the familiarity we've gained

    From the Bounteous King to old wetnurse Ma’aj.
