1. قوامك اللّدنُ لا ما يزعمُ الغصنُ

    ولحظك العضبُ لا ما تدَّعي اليمنُ

    Your constitution is innate, not what the branch claims

    And your glance is natural, not what the right hand alleges

  2. تشوقني كلُّ دارٍ أنت نازلها

    وغيرها ليَ فيها الأهلُ والوطن

    Every house you reside in makes me yearn

    While my family and homeland are in others

  3. لا ذقتَ ما ذقتُ من برحي جوىً وهوى

    وقد تولّت سراعاً عنّي الظّعن

    You have not tasted what I tasted of passionate love and desire

    And betrayal hastened away from me

  4. لي من ثناياكَ برقٌ يستضيءُ بهِ

    وجدي ومن فيض دمعي عارضٌ هتن

    From your glances there is a lightning that illuminates my heart

    And my ardour and from my tears an opposing downpour

  5. وما تصاحبَ جسمي والسقامُ غداةَ

    البين حتى تعادى الجفن والوسن

    Since we parted, ill health has not left my body

    Until eyelids and molars became hostile

  6. مهلاً عذولي بمسلوب العزاء لهُ

    في كلّ يومٍ بمهضوم الحشا سجن

    Wait, O you who stops me, bereft of consolation

    Imprisoned every day, with a broken heart

  7. كالرُّمح لوناً وليناً لحظُ مقلتهِ

    يخون كلّ فؤادٍ وهو مؤتمن

    The colour of his glance is like a spear, soft

    It betrays every heart though entrusted

  8. كم فتنةٍ ليَ في جفنيهِ كامنةٍ

    لولا هوى مثلهِ لم تخلق الفتن

    How much temptation lies hidden in his eyes

    If not for a love like his, temptations would not have been created

  9. وسنانُ أسقمَ جسمي سقم ناظرهِ

    السّاجي وأسهرَ عيني ذلك العين

    The tooth that made my body ill made his watcher sick

    My sword and his eye that keeps me awake

  10. فردٌ من الناس جيشٌ من لواحظهِ

    يردي ويملكُ لا عقلٌ ولا ثمن

    He alone is an army of men with his glances

    He wrecks me and reigns with no sanity or any price

  11. قلبي ولومك غوثاهُ على تلفي

    منكَ الملامُ ومنهُ البثُّ والحزن

    My heart and your blame seek his help in my ruin

    The blame is from you and the broadcasting and the sorrow from it

  12. يودُّ لو كان عيناً عند رؤيتهِ

    فإنْ عذلتَ تمنّى أنّهُ أذن

    It wishes if it were an eye when seeing him

    And if you turn away it wishes it were an ear

  13. ما للنوى أنفقتْ دمعي بلا خلفٍ

    فالجفنُ في قبضةِ الإعدام مرتهن

    Why did my tears freely flow without replacement

    So the eyelids are hostage to oblivion

  14. ما شايعتْ تلكمُ الأظعانَ عن إضمٍ

    إلاَّ وفي نفسها الأظعانُ والإحنُ

    None accompanied those sights except more sights

    And in itself are sights and laments

  15. ولّتْ ببدرِ دجىً في القلبِ منزلهُ

    ودرّةٍ في بحار الدمع تختزن

    The full moon resides in my heart in the darkness of night

    And a pearl lies hidden in the seas of tears

  16. هِبتُ الزمانَ فأما إذ أهبتُ بمجد

    الدين فليفعلنْ ما شاءهُ الزّمن

    I presented time with glory - when I present

    The glory of religion, let time do what it wills

  17. إلى ندى هبةِ الله ارتمت هممٌ

    هيمٌ إلى مننٍ ما شأنها منن

    Aspirations hastened to the blessing of God

    Yearning for blessings unlike any other blessings

  18. ربُّ الفواضلِ لا منعٌ ولا بخلٌ

    وصاحبُ الحكم لا ظلمٌ ولا غبن

    The Lord of merits - no prevention or stinginess

    And the owner of wisdom - no injustice or exploitation

  19. إن سيل منحاً فمن كعبٌ ومن هرمٌ

    أو قيل صحفاً فما رضوى وما حضن

    If it pours favours, for some a stream, for some a hillside

    Or it said pages - so what is pleasure and what is scorn

  20. في سخطهِ ورضاهُ فصلُ منصلهِ

    فالصّفح لينٌ ولكنْ حدّهُ خشن

    In His wrath and pleasure is the separator of the separator

    So forgiveness is gentle but its edge is harsh

  21. ذو الصّيت ما جاور الزّوراءَ موجفهُ

    حتى استطارت إليهِ مصرُ واليمن

    The one whose fame did not neighbour Iraq

    Until Egypt and Yemen revolved around him

  22. لا تعجبن منهُ لا ينفكُّ في سفرٍ

    كيف المقام وقد ضاقت بهِ المدن

    Do not wonder at him, he does not stop travelling

    Whether settled or the cities became too narrow

  23. تهزّه بالقوافي دونَ نائلهِ

    والسيفُ بالهزّ عند الضرب يمتحن

    It shakes with rhymes without reaching its obtainer

    And the sword shakes when struck to test it

  24. يحبو فتنشرُ أفوافُ المكارم

    والنّدى وتطوى صروفُ الدهر والمحن

    Good deeds bloom and the dew and twists of fate and tribulations fold

    The second row - no cowardice or alarm

  25. ثاني الصفوفِ فلا جبنٌ ولا هلعٌ

    ورافعُ المجد لا ضعفٌ ولا وهن

    And the bearer of glory - no weakness or softness

    His blessings rush and he smiles

  26. يهمي ندى راحتيهِ وهو مبتسمٌ

    كذاك تهمي أضوءِ البارق المزن

    That is how the brightest lightning flashes

    It shone and the year was dusty for its guide

  27. أضاءَ والعامُ مغبرٌّ لرائدهِ

    وفاض والنّطفُ الأوشالُ تُصطفن

    It overflowed and the first down was lined up

    How many hands did not find hands to support it

  28. فكم يدٍ لم تجدْ أيداً يقومُ بها

    ومنّةٍ ضعفْ عن حملها المنن

    And how many favours were too weak to carry favours

    The edge of the enemy, when it meets him in a meadow

  29. طرف العدوِ إذا لاقاه في رهجٍ

    ومقلةُ السيف لا جفنٌ ولا وسن

    And the glance of the sword has no eyelids or molars

    It meets him in war or invades his strongholds

  30. يلقاه في الحرب أو يغزو معاقلهُ

    فليس ينجيهِ لا حصنٌ ولا حصن

    Neither fortress nor castle can save him

    Birds are used to him, he has never lost spoils

  31. يعتاده الطير لم يفقد له سلبٌ

    فكلُّ سابغةٍ يعتدُّها كفن

    So every wide-opening one considers it a shroud

    Who should the caliphate and its comforts go to

  32. مَن للخلافة من نعمائهِ سننٌ

    تهدى إليهِ فروضُ الحمدِ والسّنن

    So the obligations of praise and law head to him

    He kills his foe with a stab and buries him

  33. يميتُ لهذمه طعناً ويدفنهُ

    من المدجّج حيث اللّهوُ والحزن

    Among the armoured where there is no sanctity or sorrow

    He has an innate body that no head accompanies him

  34. فلدنهُ بدنٌ لا راس يصحبهُ

    يقلُّ رأس عدوٍّ ما له بدن

    The head of an enemy - how little it has a body

    When he picks the fruit of resolves he sways with it

  35. إذا اجتنى ثمرَ الهامات مال بها

    كما تمايل تحت البارح الغصن

    Like the bending of a branch under last night's rain

    The spear is only in the words of one who attacks with it

  36. إنما الرمحُ في كلم الطّعين بهِ

    وقد تدافعَ في ينبوعهِ شطن

    And its spring has been contended over

    He bends hearts away from the misguided lost

  37. يثني القلوبَ من الخطي آهلةً

    حيثُ الجسومُ قفارٌ ما بها سكن

    Where bodies are barren with no residence

    It has gained all beauty from sending him

  38. تكسَّبتْ كلَّ حسنٍ من إقالته

    كاللّحن يكسبُ منهُ الزينةَ اللّحن

    Like a melody earns beauty from a melody

    So the kingdom is pure without blemish or gloom

  39. فالملكُ صافٍ شوبٌ ولا كدرٌ

    كأنهُ الدين لا غشٌّ ولا درن

    As if it is the religion without any cheat or successor

    It meets mountains with equivalents of mountains, its torches

  40. تلقى الجبال بأمثال الجبال مذاكيه

    فسيّانِ بطنُ الوهدِ والقنن

    So the valley's interior and the canyons flame

    Where spears split and seas are blood

  41. حيثُ الرّماحُ قلوعٌ والبحارُ دمٌ

    والأعوجيّةُ في تيّاره سفن

    And curved ships sail in its currents

    O spreader of weakness, and steeds compose it

  42. يا ناثرَ الزّعفِ والفرسانُ تنظمها

    لو استطاعت لزالت عنهم الجّنن

    If able, worries would have departed from them

    They feared you until they wished for their death in awe

  43. خافوكَ حتى تمنّوا موتهم رهباً

    عداهُ مثلك إن ماتوا فقد أمنوا

    An equal to you - if they died, they would have felt safe

    A defiant people who mastered the people of the world, so they grew

  44. ملقوم سادوا بني الدنيا فشبَّ بما

    شبّوا من العزم فيها ملكها اليفن

    With the resolve they grew in it, its reign was befitting of them

    The doers - so no injustice or roughness

  45. الفاعلونَ فلا ظلمٌ ولا جنفٌ

    والقائلون فلا عيٌّ ولا لكن

    And the speakers - so no blindness or objection

    No lightning unless when their swords meet

  46. لا برقَ إلاَّ إذا شاموا سيوفهمُ

    ولا نجومَ دجىً إلاّ إذا طعنوا

    And no stars in the darkness unless when they stab

    You were generous with money in glory you were stingy with

  47. سمحتَ بالمال في مجدٍ ضننتَ بهِ

    رأيَ الجواد فلا عينٌ ولا غبن

    The view of the generous - so no blindness or exploitation

    Neither wealth nor growth sufficed you

  48. لم يتّسعْ لك لا مالٌ ولا نشبٌ

    ولم يضقْ منكَ صدرٌ لا ولا عطن

    Nor did any chest tighten for you

    O son of saviours, when snakes become generous they give

  49. يا ابنَ الغيوثِ إذا ضنَّ الحيا سمحوا

    وابنَ الجبال إذا خفَّ الورى رصنوا

    And son of mountains, when the land becomes less generous they store

    Ministries sacrifice themselves among them like the orbits of planets

  50. تضحي الوزارةُ منهم في ذرى وزرٍ

    كالنجم ليس بغير السّعد يقترن

    Like a star that does not associate with anything but good fortune

    If a subject overlapped another they judge fairly

  51. إن جار خطبٌ على جارٍ لها عدلوا

    أو سار حمدٌ فعنهم حيثما عدنوا

    Or if praise travelled, wherever they travelled

    A people, if they strike the face of turmoil they care

  52. قومٌ إذا ضربوا وجهَ الوغى هتموا

    أو إن تلاقوا وجدب شاملٌ هتفوا

    Or if they meet inclusive drought, they call out

    Like time - if it weakens, they weaken without resisting it

  53. كالدّهر إن لان لانوا دون عقوتها

    لطفاً وإن خشنت أحداثهُ خشنوا

    Gently, and if its events toughen, they toughen

    I sent the lead camels of rhymes, every precursor

  54. أرسلتُ غرَّ القوافي كلَّ سابقةٍ

    تمضي نجاءً إذا ما لزَّها القرن

    Proceeds successfully when the caravan connects to it

  55. يحثنَّ على طول الدجى أرنٌ

    خيرُ الثناء عليك السابق الأرن

    They urge more night into dawn, the bells

    The best praise of you, O you pioneering bells

  56. مغذَّةً غيرها أودى بها ظمأٌ

    برحٌ وغيرُ نداك الآجن الأسن

    Quenching others or thirst leads it astray

    And the freshness of your drink is the most aged

  57. فإن تعد بعد حين عنكَ حامدةً

    مغارها فعدا أرساغها الثمن

    If after a while, it counts you as ungrateful

    Its burial place counts its bier as expensive

  58. هديُّ عبدٍ لكم أمست هديّتهُ

    قبولها فكفاه المهر والثمن

    The gift of a servant to you became his gift

    Its acceptance sufficed as price and fee

  59. لا تطلبوا من مقالٍ كفءَ فعلكمُ

    اللهُ أكبرُ حارت فيكمُ الفطن

    Do not ask an expression to equal your actions

    God is Greater - minds were baffled by you
