1. Has my being a steadfast man deceived you?

    For my teeth smile, while my heart weeps.

  2. For one slain on the day of parting there is no vengeance,

    Nor is there any release for one held captive by love for you.

  3. Patience called me away from you, but I did not answer it;

    Why, then, have you answered it, though it did not call you?

  4. I disobeyed the one who urged me to endure being without you;

    How, then, did you obey the one who told you to keep away from me?

  5. May God guard you—for injustice is a disgrace.

    And say, 'May He guard you from love's torments.'

  6. For you are the sun, which draws near to no seeker;

    Or else you are Time, which has no pity for one who complains.

  7. I fear the swords of your people of Maʿadd,

    Yet they were no deadlier than love for you.

  8. I accepted being afraid while you were at peace,

    And my own displeasure mattered little to me in pleasing you.
