1. Your letter came to me, O son of the noble,

    so the precious one bestowed a splendid, precious gift.

  2. I grew drunk on its exquisite words,

    as though through it I had drunk aged wine.

  3. Meanings like the intoxicating heat of wine

    dwell in letters that resemble goblets.

  4. They declaimed and enraptured even inanimate things,

    in truth, and made even the pages laugh.

  5. And I had been captive to fierce calamities;

    then they brought bliss and banished misery.

  6. Through your bounty you freed our bodies,

    and through your speech you bound our souls.

  7. You sent wisdom concealed within bounty,

    so your petitioner gained discernment and a purse.

  8. And not every writer of merit other than you

    makes suns rise in the darkness of night.

  9. And if one astray seeks the valley of his guidance, he discerns

    from his thought the fire of Moses.
