1. كيف السكون من الدنيا إلى سكنِ

    وآخر اللّهو منها بأولُ الحزن

    How can there be tranquility in moving from this world to a home,

    When the last of playfulness is the beginning of sorrow?

  2. تغيرتْ بهجةُ الأيّام وانكسفتْ

    منها نضارة ذاك المنظر الحسن

    The joy of days has changed and their beauty has faded;

    That fair scene has lost its radiance.

  3. وقصّرت عمرَ الآمال فاتكةٌ

    فما أحنّ إلى أهل ولا وطن

    And hopes had their lives shortened by calamities -

    So I long neither for family nor homeland.

  4. كأنما الأرضُ لم تبرز بزينتها

    يوماً ولا غرَّدت ورقاءُ في فنن

    It is as if the earth never displayed her finery,

    Nor did the warblers ever trill in the branches.

  5. خلتْ منازلُ عزٍّ من ندىً وهوى

    فما تمرُّ بها إلاَّ على دمن

    The abodes of glory are devoid of love and passion -

    None pass by them except over ruins.

  6. إلى الفناء تصير الخلق قاطبةً

    فأنت تدأب في تثميرها لمن

    All creatures end up in oblivion -

    Yet You persist in making them fruitful, but for whom?

  7. والناس صنفان إلاَّ حازماً يقظاً

    رأى اليقين بعقل ناضرٍ فطن

    People are of two kinds - except for the vigilant and prudent

    Who saw the truth with an astute and perceptive intellect.

  8. فراكد في وحول العجز توبقهُ

    وخائض غمرات الجهل والفتن

    One struggles in the seas of frailty, drowning him -

    Another battling the oceans of ignorance and tribulations.

  9. وما أعجبَ المرء في حالي تقلبه

    حين الرضا عن لياليه وفي الإحن

    How strange is man in his changing state -

    Pleased at times with his nights and in times of sadness.

  10. يعمى عن الشيء يبدو وهو ذو بصرٍ

    حيناً ويسمع أحياناً بلا أذن

    He is blind to what is manifest though he has sight -

    And at times he hears though he has no ears.

  11. ميتاً يعدُّ من الأحياء مهجته

    وإنما هو من ثوبيه في كفن

    A corpse he's counted among the living, his senses numb -

    Merely a body wrapped in its shroud.

  12. ينبغي الوفاء بدهؤٍ لا وفاءَ له

    وأيُّ دهرِ خلاك الذمُّ لم يخن

    Loyalty is due to the forgetful, not the loyal -

    And which era absent of blame has been treasonous?

  13. لكل ساعِ بعزمٍ أو على قدمٍ

    حملٌ على مركب ٍ من حكمها خشن

    Every moment has a resolve or a consequence -

    A cargo on a ship steered by its wisdom, rough.

  14. يفتّشُ الدهر عمّا بتُّ أضمرهُ

    اذهبْ فلستَ على سرٍّ بمؤتمن

    Time examines what you harbor in secret -

    Go! You are not entrusted with any confidentiality.

  15. ملأت كفّيك من حدْس جهدتَ له

    وما بكفّك غيرُ الوهم والظّنن

    You've filled your hands with suppositions you've struggled for -

    Yet naught is in your hands but fancy and conjecture.

  16. ولقد وهبتك ما بالهيف من قضفٍ

    طوع النسيم وما بالحور من عين

    I have granted you the howdah and litter -

    Pliant to the breeze and the doe-eyed beauty.

  17. فما أحنُّ إلى ربعٍ ولا طللٍ

    برامتيك ولا أرتاح للظّعن

    Yet I long not for an encampment or shady glens -

    Nor find peace at your hillsides or mountain refuges.

  18. حسب الغواني شبابٌ بتُّ أنفقهُ

    على زمان الهوى في السرِّ والعلن

    It suffices, the youth I spent and lavished

    On the days of passion, openly and in secret.

  19. الآن طلّق قلبي فضل صبوته

    وراجعَ الحلمَ منقاداً بلا رسن

    Now I have freed my heart of the excess of its craze -

    And reason returns, untethered and without bridle.

  20. أحببْ بها صفقةً ما بعدها ندم

    ولا تؤول إلى غبنٍ ولا غبن

    Love that which profits you; do not regret thereafter -

    And do not end up in loss or being duped.

  21. يا هالكاً كان روحي فارقتْ بدني

    فكيف ظنّك بعد الروح بالبدن

    O you who perish! My soul has left my body -

    So how can you reckon that the body remains without the soul?

  22. أحرجت ذا المصر في عيني فاجمعهُ

    لا واسع الصدر ألقاهُ ولا العطن

    I exiled this land from my sight - gather it

    Gently, rejected - neither vast of breast nor generous.

  23. فوجههُ الطلقُ عندي عابسٌ تربٌ

    ونيله العذب مثل الآجنِ الأسن

    For to me, its surface seems morose, unpleasant -

    And its sweet Nile like a rough, contaminated skin.

  24. وفيك شقّق عيني السُّهادُ أسىً

    فما يخاطُ لها جفنٌ على وسن

    My wakefulness has torn my eyes with sorrow -

    No eyelid is stitched over their bloodshot bleariness.

  25. يا أنسَ ساكنةِ الأجداث جاورها

    ميتاً ويا وحشةَ الأحياء والمدن

    O intimate of the deserted encampments, be its neighbor

    When lifeless; o solitude of the inhabited and the ruins!

  26. لله ما وارت الأيدي التي تربت

    منه وما أدرج الأقوامُ في الكفن

    By God, the hands that grew up in it are covered;

    Nor did the tribes buried in its graves know shrouds.

  27. قد كنتَ تنفذُ والأغراض خافيةٌ

    لطفاً نفاذَ أخيك السّهم في الجبن

    Your orders once permeated despite hidden intentions -

    Gentle, the way your brother's arrow pierces the throat.

  28. وتطلبُ الغايةَ القصوى فتدركها

    حالاً وكم ضعفتْ عنها منى المنن

    You sought the farthest goal and would attain it at once -

    While tasks beyond me I failed despite bounty's gifts.

  29. كم ليلةٍ خضتها ليلاءَ واضحةٍ

    هدياً وكم زمنٍ أبرا به زمن

    How many a clear night I crossed seeking guidance -

    And how much time have I lived virtuously through time?

  30. عزمٌ يجمع أشتات الجبال إلى

    لطفٍ يفرّق بين الماء واللّبن

    Fortune gathering mountains to subtle charm -

    Scattering water from milk through delicate discernment.

  31. ما أوضح الحقَّ لو أصبحت ذا بصرٍ

    وأفصح الوعظ لو أصبحتَ ذا أذن

    How plainly the truth appears if you had eyes to see! -

    How eloquent the sermon if you had ears to hear!

  32. سلِ المدائن عن كسرى وشيعته

    ورأس غمدان عن سيف بن ذي يزن

    Ask the cities about Chosroes and his comrades -

    And the head of Ghamdan about Sword of Kindah.

  33. وكم وقفتُ على عافٍ فأطربني

    منه فصاحة ذاك العيّ واللّكن

    How often I stood at a grave, captivated

    By the eloquence of those bones and the twisted form!

  34. أثار كلّ صموت الجود ناطقهُ

    ما سائلٌ واقفٌ منهُ على وثن

    It inspires every silent virtue to speak -

    No petitioner stands speechless before it.

  35. من يفعل الخير في عطفي مروءته

    فعلَ النسيمِ مع الأشجار والغصن

    Whoever acts kindly out of noble empathy

    Does as the breeze with the branches and boughs.

  36. كم في مواهبهِ من شطبة ضمنت

    قوتَ العيال ومن هوجاء كالفدن

    In his gifts, how much life for dependents ensured -

    And plentiful rain like charging rain-clouds!

  37. يهزُّ جانحتي أرضٍ يهزُّ بها

    حرباً إذا هزَّ من خطّته اللدن

    With a host he shakes plains, in war shaking

    The cowardly if his decree tremors their craven hearts.

  38. وفي مصاب الورى مسلى لرب نهى

    نعمْ وأيُّ عزيز كان لم يهن

    There is solace for the Lord of Forbiddance in the calamity of souls -

    Indeed, which dear one hasn't been debased?

  39. وتلك سنّة ماضيهم وغابرهم

    وإنما الناس سلاكون بالسنن

    Such is the way of their forebears and ancestors -

    People flow according to the patterns set before them.

  40. كابن الظهير ظهيراً عند حادثة

    تعرو وكهفاً لمزرود من الزمن

    As protector in times of adversity like a mountain,

    Stripped bare, and cave for one eroded by time.

  41. هذا وكم ضمنت نعمت أنامله

    من صحة وغنى للمسنت الضّمن

    This, although his fingers' favors guaranteed -

    Health and plenty for the protected dependents.

  42. أمَّ الردى وجميع الخير يتبعهُ

    فراح والخير مقرونين في قرن

    But time and fortune altogether follow dissolution -

    So they departed despite the goods being paired together.

  43. سيّان في بطشه عالٍ ومنخفضٍ

    فالوحش في بيدها كالطير في الوكن

    To him the high and low are equal in might -

    As beasts are to him as birds in the nest.

  44. ما كان أبهج أيّام السرور به

    وانضرَ العيش في حلّ وفي ظعن

    None of the days of bliss made me happier by his company -

    Or made life sweeter in concord and conflict.

  45. جداً وهزلاً كحدِّ المشرفي وصفحيهِ

    فواهاً له من ليّنٍ خشن

    He possessed the balance of discernment and its judgment -

    Openly jovial, privately austere.

  46. ينال أيسر فكرٍ من بديهته

    ما عزَّ قدماً على الأفكار والفطن

    He attained the subtlest thought through his intuition -

    Unreachable by thoughts and intellects however keen.

  47. ولى فللوجد ما أبديه من جزعٍ

    باقٍ وللصبر مات أخفيه من شجن

    Let separation spill what grief it makes eternal -

    And patience expire what sadness it harbors in secret.

  48. سقى ثرى حلَّ فيه كلّ سارية

    هامٍ يحلُّ خيوط الغيث والمزن

    He quenched the soil where every towering prince halted -

    Stirring the ropes of rain and lashing clouds.

  49. وعقّرت فيه أرسالاً ركائبهُ

    إن لم تقعر عتاق عيس وابدن

    And in it the traveling beasts of burden kneeled down -

    If not even the hobbled camels of Jesus groveled.

  50. من عارضٍ هتنٍ فتى كرم

    كم قد حوى لحدهُ من عارضٍ هتن

    What a shame if you paid me back for my love

    When reckoned on Judgment Day with my goodness!

  51. سواحباً فوقهُ السّحب الكوافل ريّ الأرض

    ما شئت من ذيلٍ ومن ردن

    And if others have preceded in loving You,

    I merely followed while the rest set precedent.

  52. ولو تؤدي دموعي فرط صحبته

    ما أثقلني أيادي الزمن بالمنن

  53. حباك ربّك عنّي كل مكرمة

    يوم الجزاء بما أوليت من حسن

  54. وإن تقدّمتَ أقواماً بحبّهم

    فإنما سرتَ والباقي على السنن
