إنَّ همَّ الأمير أصلحهُ الله

كبيرٌ بالهمرِ والأقلامِ

The prince's worry has overcome him, may God make him well,

Great with wine and pens,

نافذٌ في كذابهِ لا المساعي

قاطعٌ في ذمامهِ لا الحسام

Piercing in his lies, not with swords,

Decisive in his affairs, not with blades,

مظهرٌ بالمديح أن كان مجاناً

تباريح عروة بن حزام

Appearing with free praise,

The poems of 'Urwah ibn Hizam,

وهو يبكي بكاء مجنون ليلى

ساعة الإذن أو غداةَ الطعام

And he cries the crazy cry of Layla

At the hour of permission or after the meal,

سخطه في مديحةٍ وسؤالٍ

ورضاهُ في خلوةٍ وغلام

His anger in praise and asking,

And his pleasure in privacy and a boy.
