1. In ignorance I gazed at Ramatayn,

so you took my heart through my eye.

  2. At every moment comes a stance

of yours through which I am led to my doom.

  3. And by the sanctity of loving you—an oath

never tainted by a lie from me—

  4. I have not changed since the vicissitudes

of time came between you and me.

  5. You have locked my mind [unclear word];

fate has barred the payment of a debt.

  6. Because of you I am worn out by an hour

of coldness, or a day of separation.

  7. My two hands cannot bear one ordeal

of these—so how could they bear two?

  8. So marvel, Khansa, at me:

how I survive between these two.

  9. And beauty, from my heart and

your earring, has won dominion over the two horizons.

  10. She sought contradiction, so she burned

my heart with the water of her two cheeks.

  11. And her charms appeared; then they were veiled

    by modesty with two roses.

  12. A slender woman, whom the east wind shaped

with the straightening of Samhar or Rudayni.

  13. She pierced my vitals with a stature

like a spear in color and suppleness.

  14. She came by night, when slumber had shielded

her from the slit of every eye.

  15. So marvel at a full moon that traveled from

my two eyelids beneath two clouds.

  16. O you there, which two testimonies have you denied

    from my eyes?

  17. My eyes, because of yours, were left

by weeping in two deep seas.

  18. They are not the first two eyes;

and may you live for two eyes.

  19. O two bān-trees of Salʿ, may you be watered

by my tears from two bān-trees.

  20. And may your slope host every smiling

dark cloud with a streaming eyelid.

  21. No blame lies in my passion for a slender one,

    narrow-flanked and supple.

  22. So he seems to have been cut from

    leaves, beneath two tresses.

  23. O my two reproachers—how often, how often

you have angered two reproachers over her!

  24. Cease, you two, for time has begun

to replace my distress with help for me.

  25. So its deeds were fair the morning

you curbed it, O son of al-Husayn.
