My tears rebelled against me after the people of al-ʿAqīq departed;
the pearls strung upon their cords were like carnelian.
Nothing gave my tears leave, on the day the sanctuary of con—
—solation was barred to me, except separation from the company.
My despair lived, while my living hope died,
between my captive heart and my unbridled tears.
Zaynab came by night, frightened by the wilderness,
with one heart at rest and another throbbing.

Did she fear—and no wonder if she did—the ar—
—rows of the rainclouds, or lightning’s swords?
The mouths of the cups smiled in admiration
at the clouds’ tears and the clarified wine.
Among oryx-eyed beauties, she shames the oryx with her purity;
would that such purity marked her love for the one who yearns for her.
Two melodies: her speech and the paired strings;
and two wines: her saliva and the pure old vintage.
Fresh conversation does to the love-wasted—
—lover what old wine does to one it has felled.
The wine’s bubbles amid the night’s black jet
are pearls upon molten carnelian.
Drive care away between rose and cheek,
and hunt intoxication between wine and saliva.
Pass it round from the hand of a slender, graceful woman,
full-hipped, like the sun at its rising.

Maʿbad is her servant when she fingers the lute,
while Isḥāq is far, far away.

Nights are like slave-girls and never—
—cease passing between chastity and transgression.
Fair women are the very spirit of life to my soul—
—a spirit that, in Love’s hand, was too precious to be allowed to perish.
So forsake the censorious women, embracing days
that run from morning draughts to nights of evening wine.

For the discerning man is he who, if he disobeys the Crea—
—tor, has no intention of obeying any creature.
Many a night I raced toward its pleasures,
racing through it like a champion steed.

The stars of heaven were like horses in the—
—arena, some leading and others overtaken.

May pure rain water the memory of her days,
not turbid, nor hateful in its coming—

a rain whose clouds creep, their knots not loosely tied—
