عادَ من عيد وصلهِ ما تولَّى
وسرى طيفُه فأهلاً وسهلاً
He returned from a feast of union, though he had never left,
His spirit glided in, so welcome, welcome!
وهو البدرُ حلَّ منزلَ قلبي
كيفَ اشتاقهُ وفي القلب حلاَّ
He is the full moon when it comes into my heart's home,
How can I not yearn for him when he's in my heart!
وهمومي مثلُ الدُّجى بعدَ من
فارقتُ حتى إذا تجلَّى تجلَّى
My worries were like darkness, until when
I was separated from him, then when he appeared, he appeared!
يا جليدَ الفؤاد ليتكَ تحنو
ماتَ هجراً من كنتَ أحييت وصلاً
O you who froze my heart, if only you would be gentle with me,
You died from estrangement, though you gave life by union.
كلَّما ضمَّنا محلُّ عتابٍ
بتُ أبكي ذلاً وتضحكُ دلاّ
Whenever a place of blame comes between us,
I stay up crying over my ruin, while you laugh over my state!
ومتى يرتجى هدىً لفؤادٍ
مستهامٍ في صبح وجهك ضَّلا
And when will I be guided to the daybreak of your face,
Having become lost in the dawn radiance of your face!
عنفَ الشّوقُ بالمحبين والشَّو
قُ شبيهٌ بالحرب أسراً وقتلا
Passion overwhelmed the lovers, and ardour
Resembles war in captivity and slaying.
فجسومٌ تضني نحولاً وسُقماً
وقلوبٌ تبلى ولوعاً وبتَلا
So some hearts are strained by emaciation and sickness,
While other hearts are washed by torrents of tears.
والعيونُ الملاحُ حتفي وهل ينـ
ـكرُ أن يقتل الحسام المحلَّى
And the crying eyes, how can they sleep when
The swords of his glance have pierced through the armor!
يا مهاةَ الصَّريم ضلَّ فتى ظنـ
ـن مهاةَ الصريَّم تحفظ إلاَّ
O spectacle of my eyes, he erred and left,
Does the spectacle of my eyes imagine that the spectacle keeps anything secret!
عذبي عاشقاً تغيَّر للبعدِ وصد
دي من مالَ عنكِ وملاَّ
Make me drink anguish as wine, and halve me,
From him who parted from me and then turned away.
كلما قلتُ هادنَ الحسنُ قلبي
راشَ بالهُدب من لحاظك نبلا
Whenever the thought of Sa'd comes into my mind,
My heart pours waves of tears upon tears.
كلفي بالمعاطفِ السُّمر هيفاً
وغرامي بالأعين الكُحل نجلا
Soothe me with your tender love, dress my wounds,
For my passion for the darkness of your eyes knows no medicine.
ونصيحٍ أوسعتهُ فيكِ سخطاً
يهزلُ الصبرُ كلَّما جدَّ عذلا
I warned you, when you left, of my sadness,
But passion departs not with warning!
وإذا خفَّ مدَّعي الحبِ سمعاً
لم يكن حاملاً من الحبّ ثِقلا
And when the slanderers went too far in accusing me,
I did not care, for your love suffices me!
أين منّي أهل المصلَّى ولا
أحدثُ عهداً منّي بأهل المصلّى
Where are those who blame me for loving them!
I make a new pledge to them in every dawn!
وعسى أن يرقَّ قاسٍ فلا
أهلكُ وجداً وليتهُ ولعلاَّ
Perhaps they will be lenient with me, for I love them,
And will show love even if they intend rejection!
يا ولاةَ القلوب رفقاً فإنَّ الظلم شي
ءٌ إن دام أعقبَ عزلا
O you rulers of my heart, be gentle with me, for oppression
Is harsh even if it comes from the sultan!
دولةُ الحبِ كنتُ فيها وجيهاً
والمُولى من الشباب مولَّى
I was happy in the kingdom of love and contentment,
And the homeland of my love was refuge and rest.
خلّني والزمانَ وأعلم يقيناً
أنَّ صرفَ الزمان يبلي ويبلى
Let me roam around in these hard times,
Knowing that fate unravels even what is wound tight!
وتمسكْ بالصبر حزماً فكم أقـ
ـبلَ خطبٌ حتى إذا خيف ولى
Hold on to patience firmly, for many affairs,
Hardships will ease after they amass.
فلقد آنَ أن يعزَّ جناباً
بالمليك المعزِ من كان ذلاَّ
Indeed, it's time for you to show grace to the weak
For he who shows no tenderness harms himself!
فاعل الفعلِ ترجف الأرضُ منه
قائل الخير قائلُ الخيرِ قبلا
His sword, when battles intensified, was deadly,
And his kindness was refreshing shade when peace came.
واهبُ السائل الذي جاءَ فرداً
جُملاً كم حوت سُعاداً وجملاً
He is the most noble in birth and in nature,
In ancient times and in these days is best!
ودلاصاً سرداً وأسمرَ خطيَّاً
وسيفاً عضباً وخيلاً وإبلا
Endless glory was decreed for him and fame is soaring,
None can fathom his power and his roots are blessed!
يحفظ الصاحبَ الخؤونَ وفاء
ثمَّ ينسى أفعالهُ بعدُ قبلا
How many a stray did he guide and dispersed ones unite,
How many filled stomachs and naked ones dress!
حاتميُّ السَّماحُ يخلي بيوتَ الـ
ـمال جوداً ويملأُ الدَّهر فضلا
A king who loves benevolence, never bored by it,
And the excuses of a lover do not bore him!
وجههُ لا عدمتهُ ونداهُ
هلَّ هذا سعداً وذلك استهلاَّ
Praise him, for lofty traits were manifested in him,
Praise and many salutations suit him!
ذو سيوفٍ هجيرها للأعادي
وبنودٍ تضفو على الخلق ظِلاَّ
He captures the land with a robe of honor from him
Like the rain wherever it comes brings goodness!
وهو يحيي العفاة إن شيمَ رفداً
ويميتُ العداةَ إن شام نصلا
His exerted efforts always hit their mark,
And the outpouring of his hands is never exhausted!
خفْ نداهُ والبأسَ سلماً وحرباً
فهما البحرُ سال والسيفُ سُلاَّ
In war, his sword spreads misery,
And in peace, his hands pour forth goodness!
أشرف العالمين خلقاً وخلقاً
وقديماً وهمةً ومحلاَّ
If he frowned at the stars, they would miss their orbits,
If his sword got angry at them, it would have excelled them!
طال مجداً وطار صيتاً فما يد
رك شأواً وطاب فرعاً وأصلاً
He charges into the arena of war wearing a turtleneck,
For not all horse men excel wearing a turtleneck!
كم هدى حائراً وضمَّ شتاتاً
وحمى شاغراً وأغنى مُقلاَّ
His stab, when war intensifies, finds its mark,
And if an intercessor interceded, he would judge!
ملكٌ يعشق السماح فلا ملـ
ـل وما عذرُ عاشقٍ أن يملاَّ
O Imam of horsemen, if not for you, prostate submission
In prayer would not be obligatory if the sword submitted!
أمَّ منهُ حمدي فآنسهُ الله
غريبَ الأوصاف للحمد أهْلا
He enacted a law that refuses his sword
To be anything in his presence but forbidden or submitted!
وجزيلَ الصلات لا يعجب الحـ
ـسادُ منهُ إن أصبح القول جزلا
Fate allowed me to be near you and fate
Is eternal, generous at both ends!
يكسبُ الأرضُ حلةً منهُ زيناً
وكذا الغيث حيث ما حلَّ حلَّى
You reconciled both sides with justice, have you
Heard justice being mentioned before this!
كفل الخلق بالنوال فقد أصـ
ـبح كلٌّ على أياديه كلاَّ
You left the government of hypocrisy humiliated,
And its knights humiliated and miserable!
لم يفت سعيهُ محلٌ من المجـ
ـدِ ولم يبق فيضُ كفَّيه محلا
You stood up for true guidance, so I gained relief,
And you supported the call so the proof was established!
سيفهُ في الحروب يهمي وبالاً
ويداهُ في السلم تسفح وبْلا
It's not the affliction, that showed me passion from love,
Nor have I cared to pack, to wander as an ascetic!
من تحور الكواكب الزهر في الـ
ـآفاق لو نصلت عواليه نبلا
Estrangement has won me over, so I have shown patience,
And anguish has come over me, I have not said "stop"!
ويودُّ الهلاكُ يومَ مثارِ النقـ
ـع لو كان من مذاكيه نعلا
When your purpose became serious about an issue,
Make light of whatever incident becomes serious!
والمجّلي في حلبة الحرب إن جا
لَ وما كلُّ فراسٍ جالَ جلَّى
Stopped the hands of calamities from reaching me!
Those who seek refuge only have your hands, and had I not been certain, I would not have said this!
طعنهُ فيصلٌ إذا أشكلَ الخطـ
ـب وإن قال خاطباً قال فصلا
So the horses sprint to your connection,
Cutting across the lands hurriedly and gently!
يا إمامَ الفرسان لولاك لم يفـ
ـرض سجودُ الطلى إذا السيفَ صلَّى
They lose their saddles at a star of heavens, if it wished removal!
The ochre of the script has lost its good fortune sign,
هوَ شرع يأبى حسامك إلاَّ
كونهُ فيهِ محرماً أو محلاَّ
And the red starched caps have lost their lodging!
O king of the elite, inheriting and earning it!
سمحَ الدهر لي بقربك والد
دهر قديمُ الحالين جوداً وبخلاَ
O prince of noblemen, in words and deeds!
If I do not regard your courtyard as my sanctum
عدلَ البين جامعاً ومشتاً
أسمعتم للبين من قبلُ عدْلا
Then it is higher than whoever else is out there!
Since my holy chalice is busy getting drunk with them
رُحتَ من دولة النفاق مُديلاً
ولفرسانه مذيلاً مذلاَّ
Then my exalted chalice is not getting drunk with the exalted!
Which poetry have I been granted the joy of hearing that is more gratifying than the joy of hearing!
قمتَ دونَ الهدى ففرجتُ ضيقاً
ونصرتَ الندى فروضتَ أزلا
All miracles, on land and sea, are his signs,
That are recited in your gathering places!
لا عراك الذي أراني من الشو
قِ ولا دقتُ للصبابةِ خبلا
Every meaning is so elegant and words so refined,
Bringing joy and beauty to the hearts!
نال مني الجوى فأحسنتُ صبراً
وبراني الأسى فما قلتَ مَهلا
As if the proverbs therein roam the land,
Until you see in them proof just for you!
وإذا جلَّ ما تروم من الأمـ
ـر فأهونْ بحادثٍ أن يجلاَّ
Some that are strongly repelling draw you near,
While others are gently captivating with beauty!
هاك مني تفصيلَ أمرك يا منْ
كفَّ عني أيدي الخطوب وشلاّ
Made for one who contemplates beauty,
And for one who most excellently understands reason!
ليس للمعتفين إلاَّ أياديـ
ـك ولولا اليقين ما قلتُ إلاَّ
None but your love dictated them pace by pace,
None but your majesty split them, rising supreme!
فالمطايا إلى صلاتكَ هيمٌ
قاطعاتُ البلاد حزوناً وسهلا
What hunter has gained anything from them
And what sick one hasn't gained health from them!
تردُ الرفهَ بين عشبٍ وشعبٍ
لو بغاهُ نجمُ السماءِ لزلاَّ
They bring happiness to all with you, days passing by
Gathering you without changing them!
فقدتك الجيادُ قباً وسمرُ الـ
ـخطَ صماَّ والشدقميةُ نزلا
When you descend, may peace be upon an abode you reside in,
And you pray in a place you alight!
يا مليك العلياءِ إرثاً وكسباً
وأميرَ الكرام قولاً وفعلاً
لا عدتَ ساحتيك غادات فكري
فهي أعلى ممَّن سواك وأغلى
حيث قدحي الواري بهمُ متوارٍ
ثمَّ لا قدحيَ المعلَّى معلَّى
أيُّ نظمٍ وهبتهُ لذة الغمـ
ـضِ فوافى من لذة الغمض أحلى
سائرُ المعجزات في البرِّ والـ
ـبحر وآياتهُ بناديك تتُلى
كلُّ معنى كالسحر لطفاً ولفظٍ
في عيون القلوب يحلو ويحلا
وكأنّ الأمثال فيه تجوبُ الـ
ـأرض حتى ترى بها لك مثلا
نافراتٌ مثل الجآذر تهوى
آنساتٌ مثلَ العرائس تجلَّى
كائناتٌ لمن تأملَ حسناً
ولمن أحسن التفهم عقلا
لم يسقها إلاَّ هواك وقدماً
لم يشقها إلاَّ جلالُك بعَلا
أي صادٍ ما بلًّ منها غليلاً
وسقيمٍ بلطفها ما أبلاَّ
تشمل العامَ غبطةً بك لا بد
ددنَ أيامهُ لجمعك شَملا
وإذا كنت نازلاً سلَّم اللـ
ـه على منزلٍ حللتَ وصلَّى
