1. أرى سيرها عنقاً أو خيدا

    لعلك يا سعد تنوي زرودا

    Her walk I see a neck or a cheek

    Perhaps O Saad you intend a breastplate

  2. رويداً بها قاطعات المدى

    إلى درك الحاج بيداً فبيدا

    Slowly with them cutting the distance

    To the pilgrims' abode hand in hand

  3. إذا نظمت بلداً بالخطى

    توهمت عقداً عليه بديدا

    When you arrange a country with steps

    You fancied a necklace upon it scattered

  4. فلو كان حق يد لا يضاع

    بسطنا لأخفافهن الخدودا

    If the right to a hand was not lost

    We would spread for their toes the cheeks

  5. وكنت إذا البعد صد اللـ

    ـقاء وآيسني باخل أن يجودا

    And if the far hindered the meeting and despaired me, rightfully so stingy

    I rode the wishes and steeds of wishes

  6. ركبت المنى وجياد المنى

    تلين الشديد وتدني البعيدا

    That soften the rigid and bring closer the far

    An inspiration shows you the beauty of many

  7. وحي يريك بجيد الكثيـ

    ـب لزهر اللهاذم سلكاً نضيدا

    Like flowers of meadows a path strewn

    We took off the morn and wore the night

  8. خلعنا الضحى ولبسنا الدجى

    إليه وكان رداء جديدا

    To it and it was a new cloak

    We knocked where the gloom ember

  9. طرقناه حيث الدجى فحمة

    وتأبى الأسنة ألا وقودا

    And the swords refuse but firewood

    And rain has bared the lightning whites

  10. وقد جرد الغيث بيض البروق

    وأقسم ألا تحل الغمودا

    And swore not to dissolve the clouds

    And for the caravan under the swords of lightning

  11. وللركب تحت سيوف الوميض

    جفون أبت أن تذوق الهجودا

    Eyelids that refused to taste sleep

    And the settlements wore blindness

  12. وقد لبست أكمه الوهاد

    من صنعة الغاديات البرودا

    From the making of the cool abandoned ones

    So its fires were alerted and the eyelids

  13. فنبه نيرانه والجفان

    وأيقظ سماره والعبيدا

    And its lamps and slaves were awakened

    A pillar on his honor does not give refuge

  14. عميد على عزه لا يجير

    من ذلة الحب صباً عميدا

    To the humiliation of love a sturdy youth

    If only the tears taught its making

  15. فليت الدمى لقنت صنعه

    تقك الأسير وتؤوي الطريدا

    To fell the captive and shelter the chased

    And may God not remove those faces

  16. ولا أبعد الله تلك الوجوه

    نعم وسقى العهد تلك العهودا

    Yes, and may the covenant water those pacts

    And the conversations of nights the blackness of eyelids

  17. وبيض السوالف سود الجفون

    لي الله منهن بيضاً وسودا

    For me from them white and blackness

    When they glance a raid to the eyes

  18. إذا آنسوا غارة للعيون

    شاموا اللحاظ وهزوا الوقودا

    They encountered the flashes and shook the firewood

    Spears when unfurled for the fight

  19. رماحاً إذا أشرعت للنزا

    ل جعلن أسنتهن النهودا

    They make their tongues the arrowheads

    Gazelles suppressing no tomorrow

  20. أغزلان كاظمة لا غدا

    كناسك في المحل إلا مجودا

    Like the devout in shrine except generosity

    For the sake conceded the peace

  21. لأمر رضينا برجع السلام

    وإن كان ذاك نوالاً زهيدا

    Even if that was meager gain

    Return to heartbroken Nashed his heart

  22. أعيدوا على ناشد قلبه

    فليس بأول حق أعيدا

    For it is not the first right returned

    And do not trust the harmony of beauty

  23. ولا تثقوا بوفاق الجمال

    فإن له بعد وصل صدودا

    For it has after union dissidence

    If something could be eternal

  24. فلو كان شيء يجوز الخلود

    إذا ملك المنقذي الخلودا

    When the savior owned eternity

    A young man whose fire in towns or roamed

  25. فتى ناره في قرى أو وغى

    كأفكاره يعصيان الخمودا

    Like his thoughts disobeying death

    Of high columns, long blades

  26. رفيع العماد طويل النجاد

    يمد إلى المجد باعاً مديدا

    Stretching to glory hands stretched

    He is the man you recognize in munificence

  27. هو المرء تعرفه في الندي

    حلماً رصيناً وقولاً سديدا

    Calm, even, and word straightforward

    If oppressed he is firm like the sword

  28. إذا سيم ضيماً قسا كالحسام

    وإن سيل في مغرم ذاب جودا

    And if he flowed in love melted in generosity

    He softens so if hardships gathered

  29. يلين فإن عجمته الخطوب

    كان صليباً عليها شديدا

    He was a cross upon them strong

    And if the clouds of sorrows barren

  30. وإن عقمت منجبات الغما

    م طرق بالجود كفا ولودا

    He methodically struck palm in palm

    A sovereign free in dew and tongues

  31. مليك طليق الندى واللسا

    ن يبهج قاصده القصيدا

    That gladdens the visit a poem

    You are astonished at him saying and doing

  32. تعجب له قائلاً فاعلاً

    إذا ما انبرى مبدياً أو معيدا

    When he undertakes beginning or repeating

    Good tidings to your eye the day of peace

  33. فطوبى لعينك يوم السلام

    إذا ما الحجاب أجاز الوفودا

    When the veil permits the delegations passage

    He is the granter horses before the kidneys

  34. هو الواهب الخيل قب الكلى

    ظماء الفصوص إلى العيس قودا

    Thirsty wolves to the stall a fuel

    He attains with pardon the uttermost of wishes

  35. ينال مع العفو أقصى المنى

    فكيف مع الجد يبغي المزيدا

    So how with seriousness seeks he more

    Of a people their past like the youths

  36. من القوم ماضيهم كالشبا

    ب أقام حميداً وولى حميدا

    He established laudable and turned laudable

    They subdued the rebellious lands

  37. هم ذللوا عاصيات البلا

    د وحلوا ذوائبها والنجودا

    And undid its disobediences and avoidances

    Lions of clamor and rescuers of imagery

  38. ليوث الوغى وغيوث اللهى تعـ

    ـل الصعاد وتروي الصعيدا

    Roam about the hilltops and water the plains

    As if time emulated them

  39. كأن الزمان حذا حذوهم

    مفتياً بأحداثه أو مفيدا

    Issuing with its news or aiding

    When warred they increased support

  40. إذا حوربوا أكثروا نجدة

    وإن يكن السلب قلوا عديدا

    And if the booty little, said plenty

    And if the swords pouring down

  41. وإن نثلوا سابغات الدلاص

    والأسل الغاب كانوا أسودا

    And the assaults of absence were lions

    For them white crescents they encounter

  42. لهاميم تلقاهم والوجوه

    مختلفات بهاليل صيدا

    And the faces differing with small moons

    Swords not unseemly for their cub

  43. مساميح ليس بمستنكر

    لطفلهم مرضعاً أن يسودا

    A suckling that they blackened

    Their palms mothers of reconciliation

  44. أكفهم أمهات الصفاح

    متى ظمئت أوردتها وريدا

    Whenever thirsty they reddened a vein

    Theirs in the blessed glory refined

  45. لهم بالمبارك مجد ظريف

    يضم إليه علاء تليدا

    That combines with glorious old

    And the sword named it the thin

  46. وقد لقب السيف وهو النضار

    واسم السيوف يخص الحديدا

    And swords' name pertains to iron

    Tomorrow the king's guarantor from it most

  47. غدا كافل الملك منه أشم

    يرعي مناديه سمعاً حديدا

    That shepherds his herald hearing iron

    He protected traveling and built towering and made

  48. حمى سرحة وبنى صرحة وأعـ

    ـلى فبات منيعاً مشيدا

    Lofty so he stayed fortified erected

    And settled until the corpses of lands

  49. وسكن حتى وجيف البلاد

    فأطفالها لا تريد المهودا

    So their children crave no cradles

    And the stars of his days walked

  50. وسارت كواكب أيامه

    على رغم كل عدو سعودا

    Despite every enemy aggrandizing

    His pens like his swords

  51. فأقلامه مثل أسيافه

    تميت شقياً وتحيي سعيدا

    Silence a wretched and enliven a happy

    He tossed his bows toward the borders

  52. رمى بفتاه نحو الثغور

    فأصمى عدوا وأردى حسودا

    So he deafened a foe and toppled the envious

    And sang the song of his resolute father

  53. وأغنى غناء أبيه الهمام

    كذاك الشبول تحاكي الأسودا

    Like that the puppy emulates the lion

    The arrows adorned like the polished

  54. لزانت كنانة هذي السهام

    كما زانت المرهفات الغمودا

    Adorned the flexed clouds

    The mouth laughed openly at it

  55. لقد ضحك الثغر بشراً به

    وكان القطوب لديه عتيدا

    And the hearts for it were prepared

    And his nights became white of face

  56. وأمست لياليه بيض الوجوه

    وقد كن أيامه البيض سودا

    When his days had been black

    And the rain did not deprive despite scarcity

  57. وما جاده الغيث عن فاقة

    ولكنه جاءه مستفيدا

    But came to it benefiting

    From his determinations a troop

  58. له من عزائمه جحفل

    ولو سار في كل أفق وحيدا

    And if he walked every horizon alone

    Unique less numerable by him

  59. فريد يقل لديه العديد

    ومن شرف الدر سمي فريدا

    And from the jewel's nobility named unique

    And whoever you were his father

  60. ومن كنت والده لك يكن

    له عجباً حفظ ملك وليدا

    To him it is wonder keeping an infant

    He undoes knots of problems

  61. يحل العقود من المشكلات

    ويعقد للأمراء البنودا

    And knots for the princes pacts

    And insists his glory manifest

  62. ويصلب أن عزه فادح

    وإن هزه مادح لأن عودا

    And if a praiser shook him he resisted diversion

    And I am a jewel picked out

  63. وإني لجوهرة تصطفى

    إذا ادخر الموسرون العقودا

    If the wealthy hoarded jewels

    And I did not covet but good affection

  64. وما بغيتي غير حسن الوداد

    وحسبي بمثلك مولى ودودا

    And sufficient for me is one like you affectionate

    And know your praise adorns what

  65. وعلمك أن مديحي يزين ما

    زانه الدر تاجاً وجيدا

    The jewel crowned a crown and neck

    And I roam without companion

  66. وإني أسير بلا صاحب

    فاطوى الدجى وأصيد الشرودا

    So fold the night and I hunt the frightened

    And I disdain what people say

  67. وآنف مما يقول الأنام

    فأهدي الغزالة لمياء رودا

    So I gift the gazelle to meadows grazing

    And no good in poetry after old age

  68. ولا خير في الشعر بعد الخمو

    ل إذا لم تكن سامعاً مستعيدا

    If you were not a listening recaller

    And if I live I sent it in your glory

  69. وإن عشت أرسلتها في علا

    ك معنى حليماً ولفظاً رشيدا

    A sensible meaning and word well-guided

    By the glory not contention but praise in accord

  70. فو المجد ما الند غير الثناء وا

    فق من عرض مجد نديدا

    From the honor of purpose brand new

    So welcome oh absent with the daughters of Quraish

  71. فرحب بغيد بنات القريض

    فلولا صفاتك ما كن غيدا

    For were it not for your traits they would not be absent

    Faded even if their birth remote

  72. مهى لو تقادم ميلادها

    لقام لبيد لديها بليدا

    For them Labeed would rise a withered old

    And your understanding still husbands them

  73. ولا زال فهمك بعلاً لها

    تزف إليه فتجلى نشيدا

    Circling to it so shine a poem
