1. وأحورَ في عينيهِ هاروتُ بابلٍ

    رمى فاتقينا نبلهُ بالمقاتلِ

    Harut's eyes shone bright in Babylon

    He shot his arrows at us in battle

  2. يدافع عن ألحاظهِ بجفونهِ

    ولم أر جفنا صال دون المناصل

    Defending his glances with his eyelids

    Never did I see an eyelid withstand daggers

  3. فقيرٌ من الأمثال مثرٍ جمالهُ

    وما رقّ من دمع العيون لسائل

    His beauty is beyond all description

    No tears from eyes entreat him

  4. تعرَّض لي لمَّا جننت بحبّهِ

    فقيَّدني من صدغهِ بسلاسل

    He confronted me when I was lovesick

    Binding me by his temple with chains

  5. ولو لم يكن بدرَ الملاحة لم يكن

    تنقَّل في أحشائنا في منازل

    Without the full moon there'd be no

    Wandering between our ribs and dwellings

  6. يزور فيسري في نجوم قلائدٍ

    ودجية أصداغٍ وسحب غلائل

    Visiting, traversing constellations

    And dark temples and trailing clouds

  7. وما عاف دمعي شائماً بارق الحيا

    سوى أنهُ يشتاق برد المناهل

    My tears blame only the lightning of life

    Yearning for the coolness of springs

  8. أبي الحسن إلاَّ أن أهيم بقدّهِ

    فمن أجلهِ أهوى نسيم الثمائل

    I crave him while he is my killer

    If not for passion I'd not crave a killer

  9. ولولا تثنيه لما بت سامعاً

    إلى كل غصن شائقات بلابلي

    I am bereft of reason in the madness of love

    Since when are gazelles ensnared?

  10. إذا أطرب الأسماع نطقُ نطاقهِ

    فيا خجلة اللاحي وعيَّ العواذل

    If my sleep did not die awaking his breast

    My tears would not single out the sleepy

  11. وما كلف الأقمار إلاَّ لأنهُ

    حثا الترب في وجه البدور الكوامل

    I clung to him intoxicated with youth

    Shaking ripe fruit off the vine

  12. ولو كان للظلماء صبغ جفونه

    لكان خضاب الليل ليس بناصل

    If not for seeking war his cheek

    Would lack a mole or that headband

  13. غزالٌ فؤادي في حبائل هذبهِ

    متى كان للغزلان نصبُ الحبائل

    I desire him while he is hostile

    If not for love I'd not desire a hostile

  14. ولو لم يمت نومي لحيّ صدورهِ

    لما خصّ من دمعي الهتون بغاسل

    Peerless in passion and youthfulness

    Except Ali's son in nobility and grace

  15. تعلقتهُ نشوانَ من خمرة الصّبا

    يهزُّ التجني منهُ أعطاف ذابل

    When his words pour forth chaotically

    Only leaning minds comprehend them

  16. ولولا ابتغاء الحرب لم يك خدُّهُ

    بدامٍ ولا ذاك الوشاح بجائل

    They move like stars in every land

    Safe from their own defects

  17. أهيم إليهِ شائقاً وهو قاتلٌ

    ولولا الهوى ما همت شوقاً بقاتل

    If his writings march against a rebel song

    Their meaning is dawn and twilight

  18. عدمتُ ضريباً في هوى وصبابةٍ

    سوى ابن عليٍ بالعلى والفضائل

    He embarrasses faces of refusal

    Repelling forward the early centuries

  19. أبا الكلمات الشاردات إذا انبرت

    فما عقلها إلاَّ عقول المائل

    Freeing fate's blow at the desired time

    Repelling evil decreed misfortunes

  20. تسير مسير النجم في كل بلدةٍ

    وما هي عن آفاتها بأوافل

    His eloquent letters, had they come before

    Would have crowned the rulers' heads

  21. إذا سار في مغنى عدوٍّ كتابه

    فهمت بهِ معنى الضُّحى والقساطل

    His writings humble every naked sword

    Sweet yet potent against the mighty

  22. يغبر بالأتراب في أوجه النُّهى

    ويدفع في صدر القرون الأوائل

    Eyes wish to take on the dye of his ink

    Even the hearts of the noble envy them

  23. كليلِ مشوقٍ حلَّهُ طارق المنى

    بما ردَّ كيد الطارقات النوازل

    As if brown Indian swords melted

    To take the shape of his meanings

  24. حروف حجى لو كنَّ قبلُ لقومهِ

    لقد نصّلت منها رؤوس العوامل

    Detailed verses sent down in sequences

    No wonder their miraculous nature

  25. جرائد تثني حدَّ كلّ مجرّدٍ

    ومعسولةٌ تردي كماة العواسل

    When his black letters are revealed

    They are brides ushered to minds

  26. تودُّ العيون النجل صبغة نقسهِ

    وتحسدها حتى قلوب الأصائل

    His prose and poetry were not composed

    Except by a sayer or a composer

  27. كأنَّ السويداوات ذابت لعشقها

    معانيه حتى نالها بالأنامل

    When asked "Is there a sayer or abode?"

    He spurs his steed down the range

  28. مفصّلة الآيات تنزيل عشره

    ولا عجب إعجازها كلّ قائل

    Amazingly he pines and melts

    Though not all who pine melt for him

  29. إذا جليت سوداً عقائل خطّهِ

    فهون ببيض الغانيات العقائل

    Did his lines against any dissenter

    Emerge from prose or ranks of soldiers?

  30. وما نقّطت إلاَّ وهنَّ عرائسٌ

    تزفُّ إلى الأفهام زفَّ الحلائل

    Battle steeds bowed to his might

    What steeds bowed, what likeness?

  31. وذو القلم العذب اللغى العضب في الوغى

    إذا قيل هل من قائلٍ أو منزل

    Yours but in battle, where you hurl

    Spears at enemies looming aloft

  32. إذا خاف منهُ نبوةً سنّ بالمدى

    ولم تتعاقبه أكفُّ الصياقل

    Harboring gentleness like tall dunes

    Annexed with every soft lam

  33. ومن عجبٍ يهوى وينحل جسمهُ

    وما كلُّ من يهوى سواه بناحل

    His prose is nothing but a shore

    For a sea, each sea with a shore

  34. فهل صدرت عنهُ إلى كل مارقٍ

    سطورُ كتابٍ أم صفوف جحافل

    Given his wonders you'd think him

    A brother sea with snapping waves

  35. جيادُ نزال كفَّهنَّ بشكلهِ

    فأيُّ جيادٍ كفَّها أيُّ شاكل

    Had that sea wished with blowing gales

    It could not match his blowing gales

  36. سواكنً إلا في وغى فهي شرَّبٌ

    عوادٍ على أعدائهِ بالطوائل

    He is the virtuous, hoped for, attainer

    When a people lack virtue or grace

  37. حوت ألفاتٍ كالعوالي مضافةً

    إلى كلّ لامٍ أشبهت لام نابل

    Ignore any harsh judge in Ukaz and its sisters

    And what's between their forums

  38. وليست حواشي طرسه غير ساحلٍ

    لبحر بنانٍ كلُّ بحرٍ بساحل

    However you extol none but him

    The lands pour heavy rainfalls

  39. تراهُ لما يحتله من عجائب

    كعطف أخيه البحر جمَّ الأفاكل

    By Allah, what goodness his mother bore

    And carried in her palms

  40. فلو أمَّ ذاك اليمَّ سحبان وائل

    لما كان من ذاك الأتي بوائل

    His people but gatherings' chests

    If proud, they are tribes' heads

  41. هو الفاضل المرجوُّ فضلاً ونائلاً

    إذا لم يجد قوم بفضل ونائل

    Merciful angels in warriors' cores

    Lions of misery on foe backs

  42. فدع ذكر قسٍّ في عكاظ وأختها

    وما سار عنهُ بين تلك المحافل

    They supported every scribe's rules

    And deemed every debater's dreams nonsense

  43. فإنك ما أسهبت في وصف غيره

    من الأرض غيثت بالغيوث الهواطل

    If an infant of theirs concealed his name

    His manner exposed his lineage

  44. فلله ما ألقت من الخير أمهُ

    وما حملت منهُ أكفُّ القوابل

    Bestowers of wealth from Mudar's throngs

    Dragging the train of nomads' mounts

  45. وما قومهُ إلاَّ صدور مجالس

    فإن فوخروا كانوا رؤوس قبائل

    As the red hill camels approached, pregnant

    With the rain hand in auspicious years

  46. ملائك نعمى في بطون محاربٍ

    وآساد بؤسى في ظهور أجادل

    The noble, lofty, brilliant came

    Humbling all who revere and mount

  47. همُ نصروا أحكام كلّ مسجّلٍ

    وهم سفَّهوا أحلام كلّ مساجل

    Sweeter than dreaming in a wakeful lid

    And nearer than a visiting beloved

  48. لو أنّ وليداً منهم كتم تسمهُ

    لدلَّ على أنسابه بالمخايل

    If pebbles understood his talks

    His camps' talks would be understood

  49. همُ الواهبون المال من ملّ مصعب

    يجرجرُ في أعقاب عوذِ مطافل

    Kindly, lofty, guiding aright

    Bitter battle, sweet intimacies

  50. كما أقبلت حمرُ الهضاب حواملاً

    يدَ الغيث في شهب السنين المواحل

    Your tenderness, O Abdul Rahim, complaining

    Shaking a shining sword's edge

  51. أتى رافع العلياء منتصب الندى

    يعمُّ بخفضٍ كلَّ حافٍ وناعل

    May God give you sufficiency, ensure you

    And make sweet the life of an ardent, enthusiastic pilgrim

  52. ألذَّ من التهويم في جفن ساهرٍ

    وأحلى دنواَّ من حبيبٍ مواصل

    I fear most, while you are the sword and the time is fertile

    I forbid, while you are the flood of misfortunes

  53. لو أنَّ جماداً مفهمٌ بحديثهِ

    فهمتَ بلقياهُ حديثَ المنازل

    I am deprived of your bounty, even intercession

    Which brings no hero targeted by floods

  54. قريبُ الندى نائي المدى موضح الهدى

    مريرُ مذاق البأس حلوُ الثمائل

    The years have taken from me, and my need

    Tossed between past and future

  55. حنانيك يا عبد الرحيم شكاية

    تهزُّ بعطفِ الألمعيّ الحلاحل

    The wise preserves his habit

    Fruit of the few days of life

  56. لك لله من كافٍ مرجيك كافلٍ

    وعذب حياً هامٍ على الوفد هامل

    Be steadfast, listen not to detractors

    I am fit for the sublime and virtuous

  57. أاظما وأنتَ البحرُ والعام مخصبٌ

    وأخشى وأنتَ السيفُ حتفُ الغوائل

    Bay horses, shy white ones, alluring dark ones

    Chestnut Short-tailed birds, auspicious gray ones

  58. وأحرم من جدواك حتى شفاعةً

    تعود بطلٍّ لا تصوبُ بوابل

  59. وقد أخذت مني السنون وحاجتي

    مردَّدةٌ ما بين ماضٍ وقابل

  60. وذو الحزم من يمسي كثير اصطناعهِ

    نتيجةَ أيام الحياة القلائل

  61. تثَّبت ولا تسمع مقالة كاشحٍ

    فأني خليق بالعلى والفواضل

  62. وحمر اللُّهى والبيض مرهفة الظُّبى

    وسمر القنا والمقربات الصواهل
