1. خليليَّ من سعدٍ قفا فتأملا

    بقية ما أضنى الفراق وانحلا

    My beloveds, stand still and contemplate

    What remains of the agony of separation and dissolution

  2. وجسماً مقيماً بعد صبرٍ ترحَّلا

    أما واللَّمى وجداً بساكنةِ الملا

    And a body staying after patience has journeyed

    By the oath of binding, sincerity with the settled rancor

  3. لقد ضاق باع الصبر أن أتحمَّلا

    .......

    The patience has straitened to bear more

    .......

  4. بليت بدمعٍ كالغواني تلوُّنا

    وقلبٍ أبي إلاَّ الصبابة والعنا

    I have been afflicted with tears like changeful pearls

    And a heart refusing but ardour and coquetry

  5. فقيرٌ من السلبوان لا يأمل الغنى

    إذا الحسن أعطاها من النفس المنى

    A pauper from nightshade who does not hope for wealth

    If beauty gave her the wish of the soul

  6. فما شأن أجلاب القطيعة والقلى

    .......

    So what is the matter of attracting estrangement and separation

    .......

  7. خذي الدمع إلاَّ فابعثي سنة الكرى

    وجودي بطيفٍ لو أذنتِ لهُ سرى

    Take my tears unless you send the tradition of generosity

    And my existence with an apparition, if you permit it to travel

  8. ولا تحبسي قلباً من الصبرُ معسراً

    أذاد كما شاء الدلال فلا أرى

    And do not detain a heart destitute of patience

    It strayed as the confidant wished, and I do not see

  9. بخدّك روضاً أو بثغرك منهلا

    .......

    In your cheek a meadow, or in your mouth a water-spring

    .......

  10. أهنتِ فتى لولا جفونك لم يهن

    وخنتِ محباً في المحَبة لم يخن

    You have weakened a man who, were it not for your eyelids, would not have weakened

    And betrayed a lover who did not betray in love

  11. سخياً بنفسٍ غير سرّك لم يصن

    وحملتني ذنب الدموع ولم يكن

    Generous with a soul he did not guard except your secret

    And you blamed me for the sin of tears, yet there was no sin

  12. بأول دمعٍ أو دمٍ طلَّه طلا

    .......

    In the first teardrop or bloodshed for which he longed

    .......

  13. سقى الله أطلال الثنية ملعبا

    وحياً الحيا تلك الأباطح والرُّبى

    May God water the ruins of the encampment as a playground

    And enliven those plains and knolls

  14. ليالي لم يركب من الهجر مركباً

    تنقَلتِ عن عهد الغواية والصّبا

    Nights in which the ship of separation did not sail

    You turned away from the era of passion and youth

  15. ومن عادة الأقمار أن تتنقلا

    .......

    And it is the practice of moons to move

    .......

  16. نجوتِ بنفس من غرامي سليمةٍ

    وحلتِ طباعاً عن عهودٍ كريمةٍ

    You escaped with a soul safe from my passion

    And naturally turned away from honourable covenants

  17. وما أنا ممن يدّعي نقلَ شيمةٍ

    وملتِ إلى الواشين غير ملومةٍ

    And I am not one who claims to move propriety

    And you inclined to the slanderers, blameless

  18. ومن يمنع الأغصان أن تتميلا

    .......

    And who can prevent the branches from swaying

    .......

  19. سرى البارق النجديُّ لو كان انجدا

    فذكر أطراب العقيق وجدَّدا

    The Najdi lightning bolted, had it been more ardent

    It would have remembered the perfumes of ‘Uqayq and renewed them

  20. ولولا الجوى ما كنت أسأله الندى

    لعلّ أهاضيب الحيا تنقع الصدى

    And had it not been for the atmosphere, I would not have asked it for dew

    Perhaps the contours of life would echo the reverberation

  21. وما شب ومضٌ بالجوانح يصطلى

    .......

    And no spark flashed in my core to kindle

    .......

  22. هو السابق المحمود في كل موقفٍ

    إذا ما جرى في متن بيداء صفصفِ

    He is the praised outstripping in every stance

    Whenever he raced in the expanse of a desert

  23. أفاض عليها كل بردٍ مفوّفِ

    يحدّث عن جود العزيز بن يوسفِ

    Pouring upon it every cool folded breeze

    Speaking of the generosity of the eminent Yusuf

  24. إن أنهلَّ أو عن بشرهِ أن تهللا

    .......

    Whether he quenched or his glad tidings exulted

    .......

  25. تقابل منهُ طلعة البدر بازغا

    فتى غادر التوحيد للشرك دامعاً

    You meet his rising like the rising full moon

    A young man who abandoned monotheism for a tearful polytheism

  26. وماء الندى في وجنة الدهر سائغاً

    سحبنا به كمَّا من المزن سابغا

    And the water of dew in the cheek of time is delicious

    We drew with it many a measure from Al-Muzain well

  27. ودسنا به ذيلاً من المزن مسبلا

    .......

    And with it we lined a tail from Al-Muzain, trailing

    .......

  28. يرى أن جوداً يبلغ المنَّ سبَّةٌ

    وتصحبهُ نفسٌ إلى المجد صبَةٌ

    He sees that a generosity reaching favours is an ascent

    And accompanies it a soul ardent for glory

  29. حبيبٌ إليها المال والمال نهبةٌ

    وما جمعتهُ والسحائبَ حلبةٌ

    A lover to it is money and money is plunder

    And it did not gather clouds and Milky Ways in vain

  30. من المحل إلاَّ جاءَ في الجود أولاً

    .......

    Except it came first in generosity from the abode

    .......

  31. أجاز فأضحى كلُّ نادٍ بهِ ندِ

    فما طال منهُ عمرُ وغدٍ إلى غدِ

    It sufficed, so every praiser became his match

    Thus the length of his life and tomorrow unto tomorrow

  32. وأغنت أيادي كفّهِ كلّ ذي يدِ

    فلولا انقطاع الوحي بعد محمدِ

    And his palms’ generosity enriched every possessor of a hand

    So had it not been for the cessation of revelation after Muhammad

  33. لكان نبياً في السماحة مرسلا

    .......

    He would have been a prophet in munificence, commissioned

    .......
