1. وقد أخضب الدمعُ فاكففْ رائد النظرِ

    فنرجس الطّرف يحمي وردةَ الخفر

    Tears have stained my eyes, so refrain from looking

    The narcissus of my eyes protects a rosebud from harm

  2. ومعجز الحسنِ أنَّ الحسن روضته

    محروسةٌ من جناة اللحظ بالزّهر

    A miracle of beauty, that beauty is its garden

    Sheltered from the glances of admirers, by flowers

  3. قد آن أن يهتدي قلب يضللهُ

    صبحٌ من الثغر أو ليلٌ من الشعر

    The time has come for a heart led astray

    To see the light in a morning glow or night locks

  4. أبيتُ منه ومن ليلي إذا وصلت

    ما بين ليلين ذي طول وذي قصر

    I refuse him and my night when we meet

    What lies between two nights, one long, one short

  5. وقد سمعتُ ولم اسمع كشأنهما

    بيضُّ ذاك وذا يسودُّ بالقمر

    I heard yet did not hear, as is their custom

    One whitens, the other blackens with the moon

  6. كأنني ما طرقتُ الحيَّ من يمنٍ

    والليلُ يعثرُ في ذيلٍ من السّحر

    As if I had not knocked on the door of life auspiciously

    And the night stumbles on the hem of magic

  7. ولا جلوتُ ووجه اليوم مبتسمٌ

    شمساً من السُّمر في ظلٍّ من السّمر

    I did not sit with the smiling face of day

    A morning sun amidst shades of wine

  8. وحاملُ الكأسِ من خفّت براحته

    لطفاً كما خفّت الأرواحُ بالصّور

    The cupbearer whose palm gentled

    As gentle as souls by idols

  9. لما لمقلتهِ الحوراءِ من وسنٍ

    ما بالنواظر من دمعٍ ومن سهر

    For the radiant glance of his eyelids

    What tears and vigilance in my eyes

  10. لو كان ينصف أيام الصبا دنف

    لا بيضَّ ما أسودَّ من قلبي ومن بصري

    If the days of youth were to be fair

    Neither my heart nor sight would darken

  11. كذاك خلقُ الليالي في تلوّنه

    وأيُّ صفوٍ بها ينجو من الكدر

    Such is the nature of nights in their change

    What serenity escapes their gloom?

  12. وربَّ دهمٍ ليالٍ بتُّ راكبها

    تحجيلها الصبحُ والأقمارُ كالغرر

    Many a night has saddled its darkness

    Dawn’s first light and the moon like scattered pearls

  13. علقتُ فيها بذيل الصبح مقتنصاً

    ما جلَّ عن شرك الأبصار والفكر

    I clung to the tail of dawn, grasping

    What eluded the gaze and thoughts of others

  14. وبين جنبيّ نفسٌ حرّةٌ كرماً

    تسمو عن الوزر من صبري إلى وزر

    In me a free soul, generous in nature

    Rising above burden due to my patience

  15. وكلَّ أسمر لدنٍ فوق سابغةٍ

    كأنهُ غصنٌ موفٍ على نهر

    Each gentle twilight over darkness

    Like a vine bending over a river

  16. لا تزجر النفس عن أمرٍ تهمُّ به

    فإنما العيش ما أحرزتَ من وطر

    Do not forbid the soul what it desires

    Life is only what you seize of chances

  17. ولا تقل إنَّ من دون المنى خطراً

    فما تنال المنى إلاّ مع الخطر

    Do not say that beyond wishes lurks danger

    You will not attain your wishes but with danger

  18. فربَّ سهم شبابٍ لو قذفتَ به

    لم يثنه حنيهُ قوساً من الكبر

    Many a shaft of youth, if you cast it

    Would not be bent, though it near the bow of old age

  19. وربَّ ربِّ أناةٍ خفَّ في غرضٍ

    والجمرُ ترهبُ منهُ خفّة الشرر

    Many a patient lord’s aim faltered

    Though embers dread the sparks’ quickness

  20. ولا يغرَّنك لينٌ تحتهُ شرسٌ

    فالزند يجمع بين النار والخصر

    Let not the softness underneath deceive you

    Flint brings together fire and striking

  21. والغدر من شيم الدنيا فساكنها

    إليه أشوقُ من أرضٍ إلى مطر

    Treachery is the trait of this world, so I long

    For it more than a barren land longs for rain

  22. وإنما فضّل الإنسان وهو أخو

    نقيصةٍ كونَ عثمان من البشر

    Man was only preferred though he is

    The deficient brother of perfect Uthman
