1. ما للخيال جفا وقد بعد المدى

    قسماً لقد شطَّ المزارُ فما اهتدى

    What wrong has my imagination done to deserve this distance?

    The star has crossed its orbit in vain, without finding guidance.

  2. أبتِ الصَّبابةُ أن أبيت مهوّماً

    ومن العجائب أن يزور مسهَّداً

    The morning breeze refused my melancholic vigil,

    And it is strange for one afflicted to receive a visitor.

  3. ما ذاك أجبتُ أن خفيت من الضَّنى

    فرأيت عاراً أن يزور العوَّدا

    I did not deny I concealed my woes,

    For I saw shame in receiving one accustomed to comfort.

  4. ولئن أجبتُ مع الخفاء مسائلاً

    فكذا يجيب ولست تبصره الصدى

    If I respond discreetly to questions,

    So does an echo answer though unseen.

  5. ظمأي بمهضوم الحشا ريَّان من

    ماءِ الشَّباب وخصرهُ يشكو الصّدى

    My thirst is slaked by the gathered rain

    Of my youth, though my waist complains of leanness.

  6. عبقَ النَّسيم بقدهِ فتأوَّدت

    أعطافهُ وبصدغهِ فتجَّعدا

    The fragrance of the breeze intoxicated

    Its hems which rumpled and its temples which curled.

  7. كالظَّبي طرفاً والسُّلافةِ ريقةً

    والدعص ردفاً والقضيب تأوُّدا

    Like a gazelle in glance, and smooth as silk in touch,

    With thighs like a staff and swaying in its walk.

  8. وكأنَّ جذوةَ حدّه في مائهِ

    ناري تزيد على البكاء توقدا

    As if the sparkle of its sharp edge in its sheath

    Were my fire, kindled to passion by tears.

  9. متقلدٌ سيفاً كفاهُ شيمهُ

    لحظٌ دماءَ العاشقينَ تقلَّدا

    Girded with a sword, its sheath bears witness

    To the blood of lovers shed in a glance.

  10. عجباً لرمحُ القدّ يفتكُ غير مع

    تقلٍ وسيفِ اللَّحظ يقطع مغمدا

    Strange that an unleveled spear can wreak havoc

    While the sheathed sword of a glance cuts to the quick!

  11. يمسي كما يضحي فؤادي والأسى

    ويعودني برحُ الغرام كما بدا

    My heart grieves from dusk till dawn,

    And the pain of love returns each day as it began.

  12. أمهدي أنَّ التفرُّقَ في غدٍ

    لا تسمِ يومئدٍ غداً إلاَّ ردى

    I fear our parting tomorrow will leave

    No trace of happiness, only regrets.

  13. سارت دموعُ العين تسبقُ عيسهم

    وخداً لأنَّ العذل كان لها حدا

    My tears rushed ahead of their goodbyes,

    And cheeks too, for longing had an end.

  14. وضللتُ في صُبح المباسم والضُّحى

    كيف السبيلُ وقد اصلًّنَي الهدى

    I lost my way in the charms of dawn,

    How can I find my path when guidance has deserted me?

  15. عرج على الأَطلال صُبحةَ بينهِم

    إن شئتَ أن تلقى الصباح الأسودا

    Stop by the ruins, some dawn, if you wish

    To see the blackest of dawns.

  16. إن عاد صبحي وهو ليلٌ دامسٌ

    فبما صبحتُ الليلَ صبحاً سرمدا

    If my dawn returns as darkest night,

    I made the night dawn, everlasting.

  17. ولئن خلا ذاك الكناسُ فطالما

    أهدى لنا ذاك الغزالَ الأَغيدا

    If that tavern is empty, still

    That gazelle guided us long ago.

  18. وأما وعيشِك لو صحوتُ من الهوى

    ولقيت في دينِ الصبابة مُرشدا

    And had I woken from passion's stupor

    To the faith of chastity, finding a guide,

  19. لحمدتُ حادثة النوى من بعد ما

    وهبت لنا قاضي القضاة محمدا

    I would praise the virtue that followed when

    God granted us the Judge of Judges, Muhammed.

  20. المنعم الندسَ البليغ المصقع الحب

    رَ الكريمَ اللوذعيَّ الأمجدا

    Bestower of bounty, eloquent, revered, generous,

    Merciful, glorious, most excellent.

  21. لولاهُ كان الحمد غير منظَّمِ

    ولكان عقد المكرمات مبدَّدا

    Without him praise would be flawed,

    The necklace of favors scattered apart.

  22. حاز التَّمام مع التمائم مرضعاً

    ودعوهُ في المهد الجراد السِيّدا

    He attained perfection along with good omens,

    As a child the locusts hailed him master.

  23. أفنى اللهى جوداً فان وافيته

    مُستجدياً وهبَ العلى والسُّيدا

    God spent his treasure of generosity, so if

    You come to him needy, he grants exalted nobility.

  24. ذو الكفِ ما أندى وربُّ الجود

    ما أدنى ومتفرع العلى ما ابعدا

    None more open-handed nor generous than the Lord,

    None more lofty, none more distant.

  25. وإذا انتجعت الأكرمين موالداً

    وافيت محيي الدين أكرمَ مولدا

    When the generous race birthdays,

    I come to the vitality of the faith, most excellent birth.

  26. وأسحّهم كفاً وأشمخ همة

    وأعَّمهم رفداً واشرف محتدا

    I find him most generous, most ambitious,

    Most abundant, most noble, unique in refinement.

  27. إن صال كان غضنفرا أو سيل كا

    ن كنهوراً أو سل كان مهندا

    If the torrent was Ghodnofar or the flood Conan,

    Or the rain Mihnd, coursing long.

  28. ما فارق الحدباء طالب رفعةٍ

    بل سار في طلب العفاةِ وانجدا

    The star of glory never abandoned the seeker,

    Nay, it marched seeking the meek and helper.

  29. منح النوالَ مقوّضِاً ومعّرسِاً

    فزكا مغيباً في الأنام ومشهدا

    He gifted the attainment, assailing and pure,

    Thus he rose obscuring mankind, famed and clear.

  30. لا يعدمُ القصادُ دعوة شاكرٍ

    من راحتيه سحابة أو موردا

    No devoted supplicant lacks his rains

    Or stream from his hands of generosity.

  31. ما كلُّ من أبدا أعاد وإن سقى

    روىَّ وإن أس المكارمَ شيَّدا

    Not all who ever lived and drank

    Quenched thirst, or fortified glory's edifice.

  32. انضنى الركائبَ والجفونَ إلى العلى

    أولى بمن عشق العلى أن يسهدا

    He folded the mounts and lids loftily

    To the Sublime - most fitting for lovers of heights to slumber.

  33. والسيف لا يزعُ الحوادث كامناً

    في غمدهِ حتى يكونَ مجرَّدا

    A sword does not deter calamities while

    Sheathed, until it is stripped bare.

  34. والمجدُ ضدُّ الطيف لا يسري إلى

    ثاوٍ ولا يغشى العيونَ

    Glory is the opposite of mirage, it flows not

    To the deluded, nor veils the eyes.

  35. يا ابن الكمالِ وكل خلقٍ ناقصٌ

    وابن السماحِ وكان فذاً مفردا

    O Son of Perfection, while all of mankind is flawed,

    O Son of Clemency, excelling alone.

  36. إن كان عيسى قبلُ أحيا واحداً

    فذّاً فكم أحييت خلقاً بالندّى

    If Jesus revived but one deceased,

    O you who revived throngs with dew.

  37. ولئن حوى موسى يداً بيضاء معج

    زةً فكم لكَ مثلها فيهم يداً

    If Moses contained one hand white and glorious,

    You have its like, glorifying them every hand.

  38. فبضوءِ بشركَ يستضاءُ إلى الغنى

    وبنور رأيك في الحوادث يهتدى

    By the light of your tidings the destitute gain plenty,

    By the light of your wisdom in trials comes guidance.

  39. إنْ أحزنَ الحسَّادَ إنك قادمٌ

    فالشمسُ كيف تروق عيني أرمدا

    If you sadden the envious by arriving,

    How can the sun please the eyes of the blind?

  40. فأقم بحيثُ تشاءُ إنَّك سائرٌ

    مجداً أقام الحاسدين واقعدا

    So stay where you wish, your course is glory,

    Vanquishing enviers, humbling them.

  41. مهما تغب عن محضرٍ شهدوا بهِ

    والصُّبحُ ليس يمكن أن يحجدا

    No matter how long you're absent from a council of witnesses,

    The dawn cannot be confined.

  42. زهدتني في الماجدينَ وحقُّ منْ

    يحظى بمثلكَ فيهمِ أن يزهدا

    You made me indifferent to the ambitious,

    And rightfully so, for one who attains your stature.

  43. منْ كلَّ ما زعمَ الكرام وجدتهُ

    إلاَّ النوالَ لديكمُ والموعدا

    Of all the generous race's claims, I found

    Naught but your gift and promise.

  44. وأبيكَ ما كلُّ السيوف تشيمهُ ال

    أيدي ولا كلُّ السحائب يجتدى

    By your father - no sword encompasses all valor,

    Nor does every cloud contain thunderbolts.

  45. فليحمدنَّك من عينتَ بأمرهِ

    وأقلُّ حالةِ منعمٍ أن يحمدا

    So let your appointees praise you,

    While the lowest estate for a benefactor is praise.

  46. أتلفتَ مالكَ دون مهجةِ مالهِ

    وبذلتَ مالك كي ينامَ ويرقدا

    You spent your wealth before your love's,

    And spent your wealth that he might rest.

  47. وغدوتَ خصمَ الدهرِ فيه مخلفاً

    ما نالَ منهُ ومصلحاً ما افسدا

    You opposed fate, wronging it,

    Remedying its harms, mending its ruins.

  48. ما كلُّ سيفٍ تنتضيه بقاطعٍ

    حدّاً ولا كلُّ السهام مسدَّدا

    No sword blunts each edge it meets,

    Nor does every arrow hit its mark.

  49. لجمعتَ ملكهمُ وكان مشتَّتاً

    ورددتَ مجدهمُ وكانَ مشرَّدا

    You unified their scattered kingdom,

    And reined in their faded glory.

  50. ولقد ظهرتَ بمعشرٍ ضلوا

    فظلَّ الفضلُ فيهم حائراً متلدّدا

    You appeared among a people gone astray,

    As favor bewildered amongst them wandered fragmented.

  51. دفنوه في أوراقهِ ولفقدهِ

    أسلافكم لبسَ المداد مسوّدا

    Your ancestors buried it in its pages,

    And for its loss dressed the ink black.

  52. كانوا إذا نصلوا قنا أقلامهم

    فالمال مقتولٌ بها قبل العدى

    When they brandished, their pens slew

    Wealth before the crime.

  53. ولئن عددتُ وناقصاً في بلدةٍ

    فالليلُ قد جمعَ السُّهى والفرقدا

    If I enumerate, even incompletely, in an abode,

    Night has gathered both happiness and solitude.

  54. وإذا أطلتُ القولُ وهو مجوَّدٌ

    فالسبقُ محمودٌ على طول المدى

    If my words grow long, though precise,

    Praiseworthy the lead of the far-striding.

  55. ومن العجائبِ أن أقصرَ عن مدى

    دانٍ وقد حزتُ المحلَّ الأبعدا

    Strangely I fall short of an eminent's range,

    When I hold the most distant abode.

  56. نوَّرتَ ليلَ الظنِّ يا بدرَ الدُّجى

    ونسختَ أي المحلِ يا غيث الجدا

    You illuminated the night of woes, O full moon of darkness,

    And transcribed: which of the two abodes is more lasting?

  57. فبقيتَ تحيى باللَّهى رممَ المنى

    كرماً وتقتل بالسمَّاح العسجدا

    Thus you perpetuated life through divine bounty

    Generously, and slew with clemency the vicious.

  58. أبداً يجيبُ نداك إن عافٍ دعا

    عن فاقةٍ وسطاكَ إن خطبٌ عدا

    Forever will your call relieve the destitute,

    And your mediation thwart the aggressor.
