1. عيونَ المها مالي بسحركِ من يدِ

    ولا في فؤادي موضع للتجلُّدِ

    The eyes of the doe, what is their magic to me

    And in my heart there is no room for indifference

  2. رويداً بقلبٍ مستهامٍ متيَّمٍ

    ورفقاً بذا الجفن القريح المسهَّد

    Gently with a loving, yearning heart

    And kindly to these tired, bruised eyelids

  3. قفي زوّدينا منك يا أمَّ نالكٍ

    فغيرُ كثيرٍ وقفة المتزوّد

    Stop and supply us, O mother of attainment

    For many others have stopped to be supplied

  4. ففي الظعن ألوى لا يرقُّ لعاشقٍ

    سرى منجداً لكنَّه غير منجد

    In infatuation I suffer, no comfort for a lover

    Whose secret is not aided, though not unavailing

  5. وبيض الطُّلى حور المناظر سودها

    وما كحلتْ أجفانهنَّ بإثمد

    The shining white faces, dark-eyed houri

    Their eyelids never darkened with kohl

  6. لعلَّ رجاءً فات في اليوم نيله

    يداركهُ حظٌ فيدرك في الغد

    Perhaps a hope missed today in fulfillment

    Will be grasped tomorrow by a change of fortune

  7. بليت بفعم الرّدف لدنٍ قوامهُ

    ضعيف مناط الخصر أهيفَ أغيد

    I have suffered from the slaps of one whose body

    Is slender at the waist, delicate and pliant

  8. ترى يجتني كفُّ الهوى ثمر المنى

    بهِ من قضيب البانة المتأَوّد

    Will the palm of passion reap the fruits of desire

    With a branch of the wild plum, bending under its yield?

  9. ذللت لسلطان الهوى بعد عزَّةٍ

    وليست لذلٍ قبلها بمعوَّد

    I surrendered to the sultan of love after aloofness

    And before him I never bowed to humiliation

  10. ويزعمُ أنَّ السلم بيني مبينه

    فما بالُ سيفِ اللحظ ليس بمغمد

    And he claims peace between us is obvious

    So why is the sword of glances still sheathed?

  11. تأمل جبيناً واضحاً تحت طرَّةٍ

    ترى الصبح في جنحٍ من الليل أسود

    Observe a bright brow under a headcloth -

    You'd think dawn rising through the blackest night

  12. سرى القلبُ منه بين نور وظلمة

    فمن أجلها أنيّ أضلُّ وأهتدي

    My heart slipped away between his light and darkness

    So for his sake I stray and find the right path

  13. وقفتُ أعاطيه كؤوس عتابه

    غداة صحا من سكرتي وتلدُّدي

    I pause to offer him cups of my reproach

    When day breaks from my tipsiness and confusion

  14. وأعطفُ منهُ غصنَ بانٍ يقلُّه

    من الردف ملءَ العين والقلب واليد

    And I bend toward him a branch, barely holding

    The fullness of my eyes, heart, and hands

  15. وخصرٍ ضعيفٍ مثل صبري نطاقه

    متى شئتَ يحللْ أو متى شئت يعقد

    A waist as delicate as my patience, its belt

    You may loosen whenever you wish, or tie fast

  16. ومالت بعطفي قدهِ نشوة الصّبا

    إلى خلقٍ سبط وصدغ مجعَّد

    The delirium of youth bent to my shoulder

    His supple form and prominent, graceful cheekbone

  17. فما شئت من حسنٍ وحزنٍ مضاعف

    ونغمة إدلالٍ وأنَّة مكمد

    Whatever you wish of joy or sorrow redoubled

    A melody of bliss, or muted lament

  18. ولم أر مثل الحب يهدر شرعهُ

    دماً سفكت أجفانهُ عن تعمُّد

    I have not seen passion waste its sanction

    As blood shed intentionally from eyelids

  19. ولا مثل هذا الدهر أشكو فعاله

    إليه فلا يعدى عليه ويعتدي

    Nor have I seen Time, whose deeds I lament to it

    Then it transgresses and takes no heed

  20. إذا ما جنت أحداثه طلَّ حكمها

    وهاك يدي إن الحوادث لا تدي

    When its affairs go wrong, its rule ends

    And here is my hand - events cannot be guided

  21. لياليه أعداء الفضيلة والنُّهى

    فقد عصفتْ سوداً بكل مسوَّد

    Its nights are enemies of virtue and probity

    Storming destructively over all that is devout

  22. ضلالاً له لو رقَّ بعد تشتُّتٍ

    لشمل العلى أو لان بعد تشدُّد

    It would be misguided if it softened after disunity

    To reconcile souls or bend after stubbornness

  23. إلا آن يغلو في القطيعة بعدما

    بعثتُ بها هوجاءَ موّارةَ اليد

    Unless it persists in estrangement after I sent

    Raging reconciliation and outstretched hands

  24. تزيد على هام الجبال شراسةً

    وفي بطن وادٍ أو على ظهر فدفد

    Becoming more ferocious than mountain rams

    In the belly of a valley or on a rugged cliff side

  25. أمنتُ بظلِ العادل الملك ظلمّهُ

    فنال عليٌّ ما أبتغى بمحمَّد

    I sought refuge in the shade of the just king from its tyranny

    So Ali attained what he desired through Mohammed
