1. ما للمطايا تكثر الحنينا

    كأنّها فاقدةٌ قرين

    Why do the camels yearn so much

    As if missing a companion?

  2. أثقلها الوجد فلو أمكنها

    ما حملتْ نضوَ جوى حزينا

    Sorrow has weighed them down, else if able

    They wouldn't bear the sigh of a sad heart

  3. تشتاقُ يبرين وكم من عاشقٍ

    يشتاقُ مثل شوقها يبرينا

    They long for the meadows - and how many lovers

    Yearn just like them for the meadows

  4. فمن شكا قبيح الفراقِ جاهداً

    فإنما أشكو الحسان العينا

    So whoever complains of the ugliness of parting, toiling

    I only complain of the beautiful eyes

  5. ضعائفٌ ما لي بها من قوة

    بواسمٌ قد أبكت العيونا

    Frail ones I have no strength over

    Smiles that made the eyes weep

  6. لأسقيت أرض الحمى فيغرها

    لا تنبتُ الأقمار والغصونا

    I would have watered the hot earth to grow

    Neither moons nor branches

  7. وبأبي بيضاءُ ودَّ الورق لو

    تأخذ عنها سجعها الموزونا

    By my father white-faced friendship if it

    Copied its eloquent rhythm

  8. تجدُّ أو تمجنُ أحياناً فما

    أحسنَ ذاكَ الجدَّ والمجونا

    It insists or relents at times but how nice

    That insistence and relenting

  9. واتخذت من شعرها سلاسلاً

    للقلب مذ جنَّ بها جنونا

    And I took from her hair chains

    For a heart crazed by them

  10. كالدّعصِ ردفاً والأقاحي مبسماً

    والشمسِ وجهاً والقضيبِ لينا

    Like the firmness of a backbone and blossoming smiles

    A face like the sun and soft as a twig

  11. لا واللحاظِ الفاتراتِ ليس لي

    من سلوةٍ وشرفتْ يميناً

    By the languid glances I have no

    Solace - though they honor the right

  12. ضنينةٌ بالحسن أعدتْ خلقي

    فصرتُ من وجدي بها ضنيناً

    Stingy with beauty she formed my nature

    So I became, pining for her, a pining man

  13. تهزُّ رمحَ قدّها فلا انثنى

    يوماً سوى قلبي به طعيناً

    She sways her spear-straight stature but never

    Bent, save my heart it pierced with yearning

  14. إيهاً ودعني من أحاديث الهوى

    إنَّ الحديثَ محدثٌ شجونا

    Alas leave me be from discourses of love

    For discourse awakens passions

  15. بيتا على العيس وقد جدَّ السُّرى

    نبكي من البين وتشكو البينا

    We halt the camels, and the travelers hurry

    Crying from the distance, while the distance complains

  16. نحثّها بالزفرات لا ونتْ

    فتسبق السائق والحادينا

    We spur them on with sighs, but no - she

    Outpaces the driver and guides

  17. وكيف لا تنجو على بعد المدى

    خفائفٌ بنفسي حدينا

    How can she not survive the far horizon

    When she is borne by my zeal?

  18. جاذبها الشوقُ وأنضاها الأسى

    فخلّها تجاذب البرينا

    Pulled by longing and brightened by sorrow

    It left her to tug the wilderness

  19. تحسب أنَّ بحرَ دمعي ناضب

    لا والذي أنشأها سفيناً

    She thinks my sea of tears is dry

    No - by Him who made her a ship!

  20. أو أنَّ مثلاً للعزيزِ كائنٌ

    لعزَّ ما يحسب أن يكونا

    Or that the likes of the precious is possible

    Glory - does he think it can be?
