1. أهلكَ والليلَ منضيا جملك

    شمّر فخير البلاد ما حملك

    You have wasted the night away, so prepare your belongings,

    The best of lands is the one that carries you.

  2. لا خيرَ في بقعةٍ تروق من الأ

    رض إذا لم تنل بها أملك

    There is no good in a place, however pleasing,

    If your hopes are not fulfilled there.

  3. ولستُ من معشر الإباء ولا الـ

    ـفضل إذا ما نصرتَ من خذلك

    I am not of those who show weakness or superiority

    If you support those who betrayed you.

  4. لن جانباً للكريم وأصفُ لهُ

    وأغلظ على من جفاك أو جهلك

    I will turn away from the generous and describe him,

    And be harsh to those who were unjust or ignorant to you.

  5. والهمُّ داءُ أن لم تداركه بالـ

    ـهجر دواء أنضاك أو قتلك

    Worry is a disease that will not leave you

    Unless you cure it by abandonment, or it kills you.

  6. فأعزز وأن سامك الهوان وصن نف

    سك دون الضَّنين أن بذلك

    So be dignified even if dishonor has befallen you,

    And guard your soul from doubters, and you will succeed.

  7. بأي رجلِ تسعى إلى غاية الـ

    ـمجد وقيدُ الزمان قد شغلك

    What man seeks the heights of glory

    While the times have preoccupied you?

  8. أنحلك السُّقمُ ناهكاً واستردَّ الـ

    ـدهر أخذَ البخيل ما نحلك

    Illness has left you weakened, and time

    Has taken back what it bestowed on the stingy.

  9. فأنت من دون أهلهِ لا ترى

    خيلك مجنونةً ولا خولك

    Without your people you will not see

    Your crazed horses or your foals.

  10. فلا تخلهُ ظلماً خصصت بهِ

    فالدهر يقضي كذا عليك ولك

    So do not wrong him out of hatred,

    For time will judge you as it judges him.

  11. من أين تلقى مصافياً والورى

    صنفانِ هذا قلى وذا ختلك

    Where will you find loyal friends when

    Mankind is of two types: roasted or raw?

  12. عدوُّك الجاهلون بالعلم أو حا

    سدك الدهرَ عاملاً عملك

    Your enemies are the ignorant or

    Those jealous of you and your deeds.

  13. لا خير في معشرٍ من اللُّؤم لا

    كتبكَ يخشون لا ولا رسلك

    No good in a group of wicked people

    Who fear neither your book nor your messengers.

  14. حتَّام لا تحزم الجياد ولا

    تعملُ في أمِّ غايةِ إبلك

    Hasten not to saddle the steeds or

    Work for the main goal of your camels.

  15. لقد تربصت خيفة الأجل الـ

    ـمحتوم لو كان دافعاً أجلك

    Death has lurked waiting for its destined hour

    As if it could avert your death.

  16. ما أبين العجزَ فيك رأياً وما

    أكثرَ من بعدِ هذه خجلك

    How clear is your weakness in my view

    And how much after this is your shame!

  17. أقمتَ دهراً بمصرهم لا يني

    حزنك فيها مقارناً جذلك

    You have stayed long in their land, yet

    Your sorrow does not lessen your resolve.

  18. فما حباني بحاجتي قدرٌ

    ولا اقتضاني بالحظّ دورُ فلك

    Fate has not granted me my needs

    Nor has the cycle of planets favored me.

  19. وحبّذا ذاك لو وجدتَ فتى

    أفضلَ يوماً أو فضلك

    Better for you to find a man superior

    One day, or exceeding your superiority.

  20. وآية الجود كون منعهِ

    خصَّك بالمنفساتِ أو شملك

    The mark of generosity is to deprive one

    Who envied or opposed you.

  21. أنت حسام سجنتَ بالغمد لو

    سلَّك سلَّ الحسام وانتصلك

    You are a sword sheathed, which if drawn

    Would slash like an unsheathed blade.

  22. أنتِ رسولُ النُّهى بعثتَ إلى

    دَّجال جهلٍ لا يهتدي جدلك

    You are the messenger of prohibition sent

    To an ignorant imposter not guided by your arguments.

  23. وأي درع في الرُّوع أنت فلو

    سلَّك في الحادثات أو نثلك

    You are armor against fears - if worn

    In adversities, you would prevail or be martyred.

  24. أنت جوادٌ حبست عن أمدِ

    لو أصبح اليومُ مرخياً طولك

    You are a steed confined and unable to gallop

    If released today stretching to full speed.

  25. كن عتبك المرءَ أن أرادك بالـ

    ـسوء وأن لم يرد فكن غزلك

    Let your reproach be upon one who wished you ill

    And if he did not, then make him your bosom friend.

  26. ووصلك الهاجرين عوراءُ مع علـ

    ـمك أن كم هجرتَ من وصلك

    Console the estranged with your knowledge

    That you have abandoned many who consoled you.

  27. إذا غدا في وقايةٍ من ظبى الـ

    ـأعداء زغفٍ ولم يخف فللك

    If tomorrow you have protection from the enemies' blades,

    Do not fear the clamor nor dread the discord.

  28. فالخلُّ من ناش في الخطوب بضبع

    يك ومن سدَّ رتقهُ خللك

    The smooth way out of hardship is to join together,

    And who sealed his tear made whole his rending.

  29. عاقبك الدهر لا لذنبٍ ولا

    أنكر يوماً في حالةٍ زللك

    Fate punished you not for a crime

    Nor on a day when you slipped into error.

  30. وكأن مثل المعذور لو كان في أثنـ

    ـاء حال مثبتاً خطلك

    It is as if the excused one in the midst of a case

    Had his argument affirmed but forgot his proofs.

  31. ما أنزر العلية الكرام وما

    أكثر يا دهرُ بيننا سفلك

    How few are the noble souls,

    And how abundant, oh Fate, are your lowly ones!

  32. يا قائد الخيل والقلوب معاً

    أهوى اسيليك خائفاً أسلك

    O captain of horse and hearts alike

    I passionately aspire to join you in fear of separation.

  33. تردُّني راجياً رضاك فإن

    وافاك واشٍ ثناك أو نقلك

    You ignore my hopes of your approval

    Whether a comrade brought us together or fortune did.

  34. فكيف أقبلتَ غيرَ معتذرٍ

    قبّلك المستهام أو قبلك

    Why then did you approach without an excuse?

    Let the desperate kiss you or kiss you.

  35. ما زلت أهوى وأنت في شغُّل

    حليك طوراً وتارةً عطلك

    Still I yearn while you are busy

    At times with your ornaments, at others idle.

  36. أسرفت يا ظبي في النفار فلو

    أمنتُ يا غصن ساعةً ميلك

    I have fled far, O gazelle, and if

    I felt safe for an hour, I would incline toward you.

  37. إني أحبّ الغزال كيف توخـ

    ـيت لقاء رماك أو ختلك

    For I love the gazelle, so how could I intend

    To meet your arrow or your spear?

  38. أن وعد اليوم بالوصال غداً

    أخلفك الوعد منهُ أو مطّلك

    If today promises union tomorrow,

    The promise has cheated me, or you have delayed.

  39. يحفظ قلبي ديناً هواك كما

    ضيَّع سمعي من قبلها عذلك

    My heart preserves a devotion to your love

    Even as my ear has lost your blame.

  40. وأنت من جيل ذا الزمان فما

    أرهبُ إلا قلاك أو ملك

    You are of the generation of this age, so I dread

    Only your paucity or your possession.

  41. أقم صدور المطيّ يا ساريً الـ

    ـليل وعجّل دين العلى قبلك

    Drive on the riding camels, O guide of night,

    And hasten the debt of the Sublime before you.

  42. ما صاغك الله للمكارم أن خالـ

    ـفت أمر الحجى فلا جبلك

    God did not create you for generosity

    If you oppose the order of Revelation.

  43. فقدّم العزمَ واتخذه أخا رحـ

    ـلك وأسلك هديت حيث سلك

    So fortify your resolve and make it a brother

    To your departure, tread the path you are guided.

  44. علَّك أن لم تضعهُ لا تجتوي

    علَّك في المكرمات أو نهلك

    Perhaps if you do not put it forth you will not reach

    The springs of generosity or sweet waters.

  45. هنَّ القوافي نهج الفلاة فما

    أحسن في بحرِ آلها رملك

    How fair are rhyme's measures, the ways of desolation!

    How excellent amid their sea is your sand dune!

  46. كم صدرِ أفقِ شققنهُ عن دجى الـ

    ـليل وصبحٍ جلون تحت حلك

    How many dawning horizons have we cloven,

    From the night's darkness and from dawn's halves beneath your protection!

  47. وأجهد فإن أخفقت ولا عجبٌ

    واقنع يقرصيك واشتمل سملك

    But strive on, for if you fail, no surprise,

    And be content with what sustains you and your raiment.
