1. حال في الحبِّ عهدهُ

    وسلوّي ووعده

    His love was once true,

    Promising and kind,

  2. إن قسا قلبهُ علي

    ي لقد لأنَ قدّه

    But now his heart is cruel,

    Though our bond was entwined.

  3. لحظهُ صارمٌ وقل

    بيَ ما سلَّ غمده

    His gaze once tender,

    His heart once soft.

  4. جاحدٌ في الهوى دميـ

    ــوبهِ نمَّ خدُّه

    But now in love he's faithless,

    His cheek smooth as oft.

  5. يا عذولي أن سفَّ

    جفنيَّ دمعي وسهده

    My teasing friend, though

    Your lids make my tears flow.

  6. ليَ جسمي وسقـ

    ـمه وفؤادي ووجده

    You own my body and soul,

    My heart and its woe.

  7. لا تسلني عن الهوى

    بيَ ما لا أحدُّه

    Don't ask me to leave love,

    When I'm no less obsessed.

  8. وإذا كان هزلهُ

    قاتلاً كيف جدُّه

    And if your jest is death,

    How can I take it in jest?

  9. زارني والظلام ما

    انثال بالصبح عقده

    You visited in the dark,

    Before dawn lit its gems.

  10. فتلاقى منهُ ومنـ

    ـي مولىً وعبده

    So master and slave conversed,

    Yet you spurned my laments.

  11. وشكوت الجوى إليـ

    ـه فما ساغ ورده

    The more I said you were near,

    The further you'd flee.

  12. كلّما قلت قد دنا

    زاد بالتّيه بعده

    You control my hell and heaven,

    As you desire to be.

  13. وصلهُ جنّتي وناري

    إذا شاء صدّه

    You're surely my murderer,

    So why should I blame another?

  14. هو لا شكَّ قا

    تلي فلماذا أودّه

    My troubles have ceased,

    Since you tightly gripped your tether.

  15. حلَّ من قلبي العزا

    ئم مذ شدَّ بنده

    When a lover goes astray,

    His reason is never best.

  16. وإذا ضلَّ عاشق

    في الهوى عزَّ رشده

    With a charming glance,

    He plucks a rose with his chest.

  17. ذو محيّا يبدو فيقـ

    ـطف باللحظ ورده

    If you wish to wrong me,

    Say the moon has waned.

  18. فإذا شئت ظلمه

    فقلِ البدرُ ندّه

    His crescent has thinned,

    As the dawn light gained.
