1. راحَ يستمطرُ الدموع الغزارا

    حين جاز الوادي فآنس نارا

    He began to rain down copious tears

    When he passed the valley and saw a fire

  2. رقصتْ في قميصها الأرجوانيِّ

    فكانت لها الدموع نثارا

    She danced in her purple shirt

    So her tears became like petals scattering

  3. برزتْ مثلَ وجنة الحبِ تزدا

    د على اللحظ وقدةً واحمرارا

    She emerged like the cheek of love increasing

    In glances, blushes and redness

  4. تبعثُ الشوقَ والصبابة وهناً

    وتشبُّ الحنينَ والادكارا

    She inspires longing, youthfulness and weakness

    And kindles yearning and thoughts

  5. لكتمنا سرَّ الغرامِ عن الوا

    شين حتى أضاءت الأسرارا

    We concealed the secret of passion from the spies

    Until the secrets shone through

  6. وجهلنا ذلَّ الهوى يومَ سلعٍ

    وعرفناهُ إذ سألنا الديارا

    And we were ignorant of that love one day

    And recognized it when we asked about the homes

  7. ما ضحكنا للقرب حتى بكينا

    للبعاد الرسومَ والآثارا

    We did not laugh at closeness until we wept

    At the distance, forms and traces

  8. ونشدنا أيامهنّ الأنيقا

    تِ وتلك الكواعبَ الأبكارا

    And we wished for their elegant days

    And those innocent maidens

  9. كلُّ غيداءَ ريقها العذبُ خمرٌ

    ما شربنا منها ونحن سكارى

    Each dewy mouth, its sweet saliva is wine

    We drank it though already drunk

  10. أبرزت معصماً يناط بكفٍّ

    لستُ أرضى لها الهلالَ سوارا

    She brought out a wrist bound with a palm

    I am not pleased that the crescent is her bracelet

  11. قائلاتٍ ولا جناح عليها

    ليسَ غير الجمال عذرُ العذارى

    Saying, she is blameless

    Nothing but beauty is the excuse of the virgins

  12. قل لتلك القدود أنتِ غصونٌ

    فمتى كانت البدور ثمارا

    Tell those slender ones, "You are branches

    So when have buds been fruit?"

  13. يتجلَّى رمّانهنَّ فإن شكّكت فانـ

    ـظر في الأوجه الجلنارا

    Their pomegranates are manifest, so if you doubt

    Look at the shining faces

  14. بأبي راكبٌ إلى وصليَ الأخطارَ

    لا يرهبُ القنا الخطّارا

    By my father a rider into my dangerously attained union

    Fearing no bold attacker

  15. أشبهَ البدرَ في السرى فلهذا

    تجدُ الليلَ حين زار إزارا

    He resembled the full moon in traveling, so for this

    You find the night when he visited a mantle

  16. هوَ ثانية طلعةً وبعاداً

    وأخو الظبي مقلةً ونفارا

    He is a second rising and distant

    And brother of the gazelle, restless and bounding

  17. يفضحُ الغصنَ والصباحَ وسمطَ الدر

    ر قدّاً ووجنةً وافترارا

    He exposes branch, dawn, and dew of pearl

    Stature, and cheek, and shining

  18. بقوامٍ وأقامَ ساعةَ صبري

    وعذارٍ خلعتُ فيهِ العذارا

    With a figure that paused an hour of my patience

    And chastity in which I doffed chastity

  19. ذو صدودٍ يجري دموعَ المحّـ

    ـبين وحسنٍ يستوقفُ الأبصارا

    With cheeks down which flow the tears of lovers and beauty

    That stops all eyes

  20. كلّما بنتُ عنهُ أدناه فكري

    ومطايا الأفكار تدني المزار

    Whenever my thoughts built up distance from him

    The steeds of thought draw nearer to devotion

  21. كيف أنسى عهدَ الشآم وأهليـ

    ـه وتلك الأوطانَ والأوطارا

    How can I forget the epoch of Damascus and its people

    And those homelands and encampments

  22. بينَ بيضٍ تحول من دونها ال

    بيضُ وسمرٍ حيرَّننا أسمارا

    Among whites that make whites turn aside

    And browns that confused us, swarthy

  23. لو يبلُّ الجوى بكاءٌ طويلٌ

    لبكينا تلك الليالي القصارا

    If sorrow were to weep long

    We would weep for those brief nights

  24. فسقى اللهُ ذلك المنظر الطلقَ

    وتلكَ الآصال والأسحارا

    So may God water that open view

    And those places of ritual prayer and dawns

  25. غدرٌ تخجل الحيا ورياضٌ

    تبهر الوشيَ نرجساً وبهارا

    Treachery that shames snakes, and gardens

    That dazzle the awake, narcissi and blossoms

  26. كم اعرنا منابرَ الدَّوحِ سمعاً

    فحمدنا خطيبهنّ الهزارا

    How we lent ears on pulpits of religion,

    And praised their love-smitten preachers

  27. ونظرنا إلى المياه فكانت

    كالمحّبين لا تصيب قرارا

    And looked upon the waters, which were

    Like lovers, unable to find rest

  28. ورؤوس الغصون للطير كالأو

    تارِ كم أدركتْ من الهمِّ ثارا

    And the heads of branches for birds like writings

    How much sorrow have they brought down

  29. فهي لا تسال الغمام ولا تشتاق

    كالأرض كلها آذارا

    They do not ask the clouds nor long

    Like the whole earth, blossoming

  30. حجبتها عنا الليالي كما يحجب

    عنّا جنحُ الظلام النهارا

    The nights veiled them from us, as the wings

    Of darkness veil the day from us

  31. فابعثِ الخيل شزبّا والمطايا

    بدناً تنهبُ المدى وتبارى

    So spur on the horses, strutting and prancing

    Bodies that ravage the horizons vying

  32. وارم بي من تشاء تلقَ ربيطَ

    الجأش سامي طود النَّهي مغوارا

    And hurl at me whom you will, you will meet

    The fearless stead, aloft, towering

  33. وانضُ مني ماضي الشّبا أوجهُ

    الأسفار تحلو لمثله إسفارا

    And gather from me the boldness of my past youth

    Roads of travel are sweet for its like, to travel

  34. لست أخشى خطباً وبالملكِ

    الناصرِ أبغي على الخطوب انتصارا

    I do not fear misfortunes, and from the King

    Al-Nasir I want victory over calamities
