1. وردت أحاديث العذيب مع الصَّبا

    فشفت فؤاداً بالوشاة معذِّبا

    The tales of my love reached me with the breeze

    And so unveiled a heart tormented by slanderers

  2. يا نفحة وردت إلىَّ بشارة

    أهلاً وسهل بالبشير ومرحبا

    O breeze that brought good tidings, welcome!

    Greetings to the herald, salutations and peace

  3. كم قد ركبت إليَّ ليلاً أدهماً

    لا تمتطي وركضت صبحاً أشهبا

    Through many a dark night you rode to me

    Neither riding a mount nor galloping at dawn

  4. تلقى الملامة فيك بالياً

    وتعنّف العذّال قلباً قلباً

    You endure blame though blameless

    And chide my heart however wounded

  5. فسلي الثرى عن ادمعي وسيل الد

    دجىُّ عن مضجعي وعن سهاد الكواكبا

    Ask the ground about my tears, ask the night

    About my bed, my pillow and the stars above

  6. والقي بالأخبار غزال كناسه

    فأراه إلاّ عنك بات محجبا

    Relay the news to my graceful gazelle

    That but for you, seclusion was his way

  7. في مثله يصبو الحليم صبابةٌ

    ومن العجائبِ إن يلامَ إذا صَبا

    The forbearing pours his drink slowly

    Yet how odd to blame one who pours a drink!

  8. يا غانياً بلحاظه عن سيفهِ

    ولوحظ أمضى عن مضاربه شبا

    O singer, shield your eyes from the sword

    For at its sharpest, the glance is deadlier

  9. دع ما بجفنك ما بجفنك قاتلٌ

    ماذا الذي تبغي الظباء من الظبي

    Leave what's in your eyes that kills

    What do you want of the deer, o deer hunter?

  10. كالغصن لولا أن يقال له ذوا

    والبدر لولا أن يقال له خبا

    Like the branch, lest it's called flexible

    Like the moon, lest it's called disappearing

  11. في جفنهُ لا تستفيق من الضَّنى

    وقوامه نشوانُ من الخمرِ الصّبا

    Sleep never leaves his eyes from sadness

    His figure sways from the wine of youth

  12. أبداً يمينُ ولا يميلُ لعاشقٍ

    يشكو فيمنح جفوةَ وتجنُّب

    His right hand never falters for a lover

    Who complains of his aloofness and avoidance

  13. القاهُ معتذراً أُناشد صفحهُ

    عني وإن كان المسيءَ الُمذنبا

    I met him with an apology and asked his pardon

    Though I was the one at fault, the unjust

  14. ومتى سألتُ الوعدَ منهُ فإَّنما

    حاولتُ برقاً في الحقيقة خُلَّبا

    Whenever I asked him to promise, I tried

    To squeeze water from a rock, to no avail

  15. عجباً لطَّتهِ وضوء جبينهِ

    أو ما ترى صبحاً أقام وغيهبا

    How wondrous his composure, the light of his face

    Have you not seen the morn rise and set?

  16. ولماءِ وجنتهِ وماءِ حياتهِ

    تعتادهُ فتزيد منهُ تلهُّبا

    The water of his cheeks, the water of his life

    With which, the more you taste, the more thirsty you become

  17. صلفٌ تعجَّبَ من وفاة تجلّدي

    وأرى حياتي في هواه أعجبا

    An indifferent one was shocked by my loyalty

    Yet I find my life in his love more wondrous

  18. شمسَ الزمانُ عليَّ فيهِ وإنما

    بالصَّاحب استثنى الوفاق فأصبحا

    He was my sun, and made an exception for me

    Exempting affection, so we both rose

  19. لندى صفيّ الدين أخصب مربعي

    قبل السؤال وكان يبساً مجدبا

    To the dew of the sincere al-Din went my ode

    Before asking, when the soil was dry and barren

  20. كم نابني خطبٌ ففلَّل نابهُ

    دوني وقلَّمَ ظفرهُ والمخلَبا

    How many seek my company but are refused

    As I clip their nails and blunt their claws

  21. وشفى ضنايَ وما شكوتُ سقامهُ

    وسقى ثنايَ ندى يديهِ فأخصبا

    My sorrows were healed though I did not complain

    The nectar of his hands revived my meadows

  22. ذو المجد حطَّ على السِّماك رحالهُ

    وبنى القباب على ذُراه وطنَّباُ

    The glorious one pitched his tent on the heights

    And built domes over the sand dunes

  23. سهلُ الخليقةِ أنسأت هزَّاتٌ نائلـ

    ـهِ زياداً في الصباح ومُصعبا

    Easygoing, his moods are clouds that rain

    In the morn, adding difficulty to the arduous

  24. ملَك العدى فحياتهم إِما عفا

    ومماتهم وحتوفهم أن يغضبا

    The king of justice, so their lives are either grace

    Or their death and destruction if he gets angry

  25. فهو الحياة غداةَ يُلقى باسماً

    ويحول موتاً إِذ يحول مقطَّبِا

    He is life itself, though named

    And death itself, though shaped

  26. بدر السماء المجتلى ثمر الأما

    ني المجتنى ربُّ المعالي المجتنى

    Moon of the heavens, fruit of hopes

    Lord of glory, the hoped-for

  27. يَثني العداةَ كتابهُ فكأنما

    بعث الجيوش إلى العداةِ وكتَّبا

    His writ turns back the enemies, as though

    He summoned armies against the enemy and assigned them

  28. أسدي ندًى وأَشدَّ أَيداً من بني

    الدنيا وانكب للحوداث منكبا

    My ode is his tender dew, my hand firmer

    Than all worldly hands, and I lean into tribulations

  29. يغنيك عن خُود الغمام إذا حبا

    ويريك طيشاً في الجبال إذا احتبى

    He distracts you from the cheek of clouds if angry

    And shows you madness in the mountains if he comes down

  30. قل للحسود انصب فلستَ بوادعٍ

    الله أشقى حاسديه واتبعا

    Say to the envious, do your worst, you cannot deter me

    May Allah make my enviers more wretched, and destroy them

  31. هو في الأيام ممدَّحٌ وأبوه

    مات مؤَّبنا وأراك أنت مؤنَّبا

    He is praised in his time, and his father

    Died mourned, while you are left in agony

  32. أين الضلال من الهدى أين الصباح من

    الجىَّ أين الجبال من الَهبا

    Where is misguidance from guidance? Where is dawn from night?

    Where are mountains from dust?

  33. حسُنت بهِ الأَيام بعد سماجةٍ

    فينا وعاتبنا الزمان فأعتبا

    With him our days improved after discordance

    We blamed Time, and it expressed remorse

  34. تأتيهِ منبسطاً كأَنك عاتبٌ

    ويجود معتذراً كأن قد أذبنا

    I came to him aggrieved as if complaining

    He generously apologized as if he wronged me

  35. يا سيّد الوزراء دعوةَ خائفٍ

    أنزلتهُ حيث الغنى فتأَشبا

    O minister, I am a fearful supplicant

    Whose poverty you changed into wealth, so he thrived
