1. ولهي في الهوى حديثٌ قديمُ

    وعذابي بالغانيات أليم

    My love has an ancient tale

    And my torment with yearning is painful

  2. عجبي للجمال يهوى مع البخـ

    ـل ويرضى بحكمهِ المظلوم

    I wonder at beauty that loves the stingy

    And is content with its unjust rule

  3. أين أيامنا بساكنة الخيـ

    ـف تقضَّت كأنها تهويم

    Where are our days residing calmly

    They have passed as if a delusion

  4. كم بذاك المغنى غنيٌّ من الوجـ

    ـد فقير من التسلي عديم

    How much with that singer I sang

    Rich with passion, poor with joy

  5. ظنه الكاشحون من كتمه الحـ

    ـب سليم الأحشاء وهو سليم

    Those who hid their love thought him

    Of perfect fidelity though he is blameless

  6. حبذا والزمان طلق المحيا

    ضحكُ الأرض حين تبكي الغيوم

    Blessed in time when earth laughs

    As clouds weep

  7. أي ثوب مدبجٍ لخيوط المز

    ن منه التوشيح والتسهيم

    What embroidered garment for the threads of separation

    With which adornment and completion are made

  8. والندامى تبني سماءَ مدامٍ

    طلعت للحباب فيها نجوم

    And the repentant build a sky of wine

    In it stars appeared for the confused

  9. حيث شملي بالظاعنين جميعٌ

    وبديد السرور عقد نظيم

    Where my heart is captured by lovers all

    And the necklace of joy is strung with pearls

  10. ووجوه اللذّات تسفر بشراً

    وعلى العيش نضرة ونعيم

    And the faces of delights dawn with good news

    And over life -- freshness and bliss

  11. وغزال الصريم لا ودهُ وا

    ه ولا حبل عهده مصروم

    The doe of Salma, neither affection she shows

    Nor a pact of faith she keeps

  12. لي من لفظهِ ومنه ومن خد

    ديه نقل ومطرب ونديم

    Of his words, him, and his cheeks

    Transmission, song, and companion I have

  13. وجراحي دواؤها ورد خدَّيـ

    ـه وبالوردِ قد تداوى الكلوم

    And my wounds -- their remedy is his rosy cheek

    And with roses, wounds are healed

  14. فهو سقمٌ وصحة وحياة

    وممات وجنةٌ وجحيم

    So he is malady, health, life

    And death, paradise, and hell

  15. خلسٌ ودعت كما ودع الـ

    ـغيثُ فقلبي الظامي إليها يهيم

    Slyly she left, as rain leaves

    So my ardent heart to her inclines

  16. والديار الديارُ حقاً ولكن

    أين ذاك الوقوف والتسليم

    The homes, truly homes, but where

    Is that pause and submission?

  17. ذهبت لذَّة الصبا وتولَّى

    عنفوانُ الشباب وهو كريم

    The pleasure of youth is gone

    And the prime of youth -- it is generous

  18. أسرعت في الذهاب ساعاته الشهـ

    ـب فدهري من بعد ليلٌ بهيم

    Its hours swiftly went

    So my time after night is brutal

  19. إنما البين وقعة نبلها الهد

    ب وخطبها القوامُ القويم

    But separation is the strike of its nobility

    And its discourse, uprightness itself

  20. حيث قلبي في قبضة الوجد مأ

    سورٌ وصبري من اللحاظ هزيم

    Where my heart by passion's grip is imprisoned

    And my patience from seeing is defeated

  21. ودموعي فيهن جهلٌ إلى نصـ

    ـر ضلوعي ولكن سلوّي حليم

    And my tears in them, ignorance, until

    The ribs' victory, but I am forbearing

  22. أشفق الشامتون من فرط سقمي

    كيف تبقى بعد النفوس الجسوم

    The mockers pity my excessive illness

    How can the coarse souls remain after the souls?

  23. ويميناً لولا لقاءُ عماد الديـ

    ـن ما اقصر الزمان اللئيم

    By God, were it not for seeing Imād al-Dīn

    How mean is the contemptible time

  24. الجواد المقصودُ والسّيد المحمو

    د صنعاً والصاحب المخدوم

    The noble Imām, the master worthy of help

    Unique in making, the obeyed companion

  25. كاتمٌ عرفه ويظهره الإطرا

    ء عنه والعرف عرفٌ نموم

    Concealer of his merit, yet nobility exposes him

    And the elite's knowledge is gleaming

  26. ثاقب الفهم والسهامُ نواب

    رابط الجأش إذ تخف الحلوم

    Penetrating in mind, arrows are the clouds'

    Uniter of valor when the brave despair

  27. كم له من قنا وهن كلامٌ

    وسيوفٍ للملك وهي عزيم

    Many odes for him and words

    And swords for the king -- determined are they

  28. وصفوف تثني الصفوف من الـ

    ـأعداءِ وهي المنثورُ والمنظوم

    And ranks that rout the ranks of enemies

    Scattered yet organized they loom

  29. ذو يراعٍ لمارق أجل يقـ

    ـضى ورزقٌ لطارق مقسوم

    With lofty thoughts fulfilling fate

    And sustenance for the questing portioned

  30. والمعاني زينت بهن المعالي

    فهي وشيٌ لعطفها ورقوم

    And meanings adorned with sublime ideas

    As beauty for their bending and measuring

  31. لطفت رقة كما تلطف الخمرُ

    ورقت كما يرقُّ النسيم

    Refined in softness as wine refines

    And delicate as the breeze blows gently

  32. والكلام الذي نهاه أبوهُ

    فلماذا يقال درٌّ يتيم

    Though his father forbade the words he uttered

    Why then say it is scattered pearls?

  33. كلُّ حرف كأنه الحجر

    الأسود فينا مقَّبل ملثوم

    Each letter as if it is the Black Stone

    Kissed and caressed by souls consumed

  34. راق بيتاً وفاق بيتاً ولكن

    ن البنائينِ محدث وقديم

    One verse surpasses a verse but

    The two builders: one modern, one ancient

  35. في نداهُ التضمين من صنـ

    ـعة الشعر وفيه إبطاؤهُ واللزوم

    In his calling, the art of poetry lies

    And in it, his hesitation and composure

  36. قرشيُّ الندى إذا عدد الأجوا

    دُ أضحى لكفه التقديم

    Bestower of bounty, when the generous are counted

    Priority is for his palm to take

  37. خالهُ مفتئ بهدية مرجيـ

    ـه وقد أنكر الخلافَ العموم

    His uncle denied him expectation

    Yet he refused the custom of kinsmen

  38. فهو قيسٌ على الطغاة فلا لا

    ن ومن جنَّة الخطوب تميم

    He is Qays to the tyrants -- no softness

    And of battle's heat, Tamīm

  39. من أناس هم إذا جرجرَ الفحـ

    ـل فحولٌ مصاعب وقروم

    Men, when glory is proclaimed, chiefs

    Of tribulations and steeds firm

  40. أي سحبٍ أمواههنَّ العطايا

    وبحارٍ أمواجهنَّ العلوم

    What clouds have their gifts shaded?

    And what seas have their knowledge waved?

  41. وجبال الحجى خليقٌ بها التخـ

    ـليد لو كانت الجبال تدوم

    Worthy of them is glory's lasting praise

    If mountains, not peaks, were preserved

  42. يبذلون القرى كما يمنعون الجا

    ر والمحل كالعدى محسوم

    They give manors as they refuse favors

    And position, like enmity, is prescribed

  43. شرعوا مذهب السماحة والبأ

    س وفيه التحليل والتحريم

    They have adopted the way of generosity and grace

    In it, binding and freeing both exist

  44. يطعنون الكماةَ بالخط والـ

    ـخطي حذقاً وللكلام كلوم

    They stab the veiled with decisive lines and words

    Eloquent, as poetry has a throat

  45. من عطاياهمُ المطهَّمة القبـ

    ـب وبزل المنسمات الكوم

    Of their blameless gifts is the heart's receipt

    And the cheeks' conferral of kisses

  46. حاز منهم رقي محمدٍ المحـ

    ـمود إذ عبدهُ الزمان ذميم

    Muḥammad attained through them spiritual joy

    As the vile time worships him

  47. أرضعتني أقلامه در نعما

    ه وغيري من غيرها مفطوم

    Their pens have suckled me the pearls of bounty

    While others from them are weaned

  48. أمهات النَّدى وما كل أمٍ

    ذات نسل على بنيها رؤوم

    Mothers of bounty -- not every mother

    To her sons is compassionate and kind

  49. جاءني من ولادها كل بنتٍ

    كل فكرٍ بمثلهن عقيم

    From their offspring, each daughter came to me

    For every thought by the likes of them is barren

  50. فهي في القرب منهلٌ ومع العبـ

    ـد سحابٌ يسيم حيث أشيم

    So near him a spring they are, and to a slave

    A cloud blowing gently wherever I wander

  51. رب كف تكفُّ عادية الضـ

    ـيق ووجهٍ به تداوى الهموم

    How many palms that halt the fist of distress

    And faces that cure anxieties

  52. فهو لا مقفل الطلاقة والـ

    ـبشرِ ولا بيت ماله مختوم

    He is neither closed off in speech nor cheer

    Nor a house of his absent of gifts

  53. وكذا لا ترى مشيد المعا

    لي قطُّ إلا ووفره مهدوم

    Nor do you see the builder of glories ever

    Except his plenty made ruins

  54. صحَّ لي وده فلست أبالي

    أن يبيت الزمانُ وهو سقيم

    My love for him is proven -- I care not

    If time remains sick

  55. وكفاني الإيراقَ والأرقَ الـ

    ـبرح منيلٌ من عزمه ومنيم

    Sufficed me are wakefulness and sleeplessness

    An inclination from his resolve and sleepiness

  56. حين حال الصديقُ والصاحبُ

    المرجو عن عهدهِ وخان الحميم

    When the friend and desired companion broke

    His pact and the confidant betrayed

  57. هان عندي هوانَ شأني من يقـ

    ـعدُ عني من بعده أو يقوم

    In my eyes, the disgrace of my condition is slight

    By one who after him sits or stands

  58. وثقت راحتاي بالعروة الوث

    قى ففازت وغيرها مفصوم

    I placed my comfort in the Firmest Handle

    So it succeeded while others failed

  59. بتُّ من وجودهِ ومن ربعه الآ

    هل في حيث زمزمٌ والحطيم

    I spent the night in his existence and quarters of folk

    Where Zamzam and the Stone are found

  60. حرمٌ آمنٌ يطوف به الوفـ

    ـد وبيتٌ به يصان الحريم

    A safe sanctuary encircled by loved ones

    And a house in which privacies are protected

  61. فمناخي وسهل ووردي نميـ

    ـرٌ والصبا قرةٌ وعشبي جميم

    So my rest, plain, roses and stream of youth

    My sight, the cutting of dark nights' ties

  62. ولحظي بموبقات الليالي

    ظفرٌ ما لظفرهِ تقليم

    O pact renewed, quenched by your pact

    Neither faded nor blemished

  63. أيهاذا العهدُ الملثُّ سقى عهـ

    ـدك لا مخدجٌ ولا مذموم

    Laughing shine dispeller of tears, bounty

    Bearing ease and that which is rough

  64. ضاحك اللَّمع واكف الدمع جودٌ

    يحمل السهلُ منه والخروم

    Independent of me for thanks of munificence

    Scorching traits none can attain

  65. مستقلاً عني بشكر إيادٍ

    مفحمات صفاتها من يروم

    Events and birds

    Hovering in every quarter

  66. واقعاتٌ وطائراتٌ

    في كل حي تحوم

    So accept the gift of thought, plump

    A present over which bliss remains

  67. فتقبَّل هدية الفكر غيداء

    هدياً باد عليها النعيم

    Of forbearing dream that softly came to you

    As glory's opportunity comes to the sublime

  68. ذات حلمٍ خفت إليك كما

    خف إلى فرصة العلاءِ

    Above gestures, strong in adornment

    And above brows, a strung pearl

  69. فهي فوق الأعطافِ محكمة الـ

    ـوشي وفوق الجباهِ در نظيم

    You have perfected your view, nature, and spreading

    From which parchments have savored delicacy

  70. حسنت منظراً خلقاً وطابت

    بك نشراً روق منها الأديم

    They are threads which if folded, a full moon

    If appeared, and if called, a wild cow

  71. فهي خوطٌ إذا تثنت وبدرٌ

    إن تجلت وإن رنت فهي ريم

    A Persian stream whose origin is you

    Its branch is sweet and palm is fertile

  72. نبعة فارسيةٌ أصلها أنـ

    ـت لقد طاب فرعها والأروم

    Yielding in your hands, the envious'

    Firewood -- its knotted wood smoked

  73. لدنةٌ في يديك يدرد حسـ

    ـاد أعاديك عودها المعجوم

    And the stars of the sky a gaze, so if

    A refractory one seeks them, they are stoning

  74. ونجوم السماء لحظٌ فإن

    لاذ بها مارد فهن رجوم

    What magic, though legit, and dawn

    A previous eve whose condition is not forbidden

  75. أي سحرٍ لكن حلال وصهـ

    ـباءَ سلاف ما شانها تحريم

    The cheeks and remoteness hid it for pretense

    An excuse until proximity arrived

  76. كتمتها الخدود والبعد للعذرا

    ء عذرٌ حتى جلاها القدوم

    So water it with the freshness of your cheer purely

    The rhymes to it ardently incline

  77. فاسقها ماءَ بشركَ العذب صفـ

    ـواً فالقوافي إليه حرَّى هيم

    And enjoy it-- you light up among us

    Becoming a congratulations and a fast

  78. وتمتَّع بها تنورزُ فينا

    وتضحي مهنأً وتصوم

    The seasons of fate continue together

    With your bounty, all poisoned

  79. تتوالى مواسم الدهر جمعاً

    وبنعماك كلُّها مسموم
