1. ولقد بدا والصولجان بكفّهِ

    والأرض في حلل لها وبرود

    He held the sword in his hand,

    As the earth donned her jewelry and furs.

  2. فعجبت من طوع الكرينَ بنانهُ

    في حالة التصويب والتصعيد

    I wondered at the hills' obedience to him

    In aiming and rising high.

  3. كالشمس يحمل كالهلال دحا به

    بعضَ الكواكب في سماءِ البيد

    Like the sun he carried the new moon,

    With some planets in the starry sky.

  4. وكأنّهُ بين القواضب والقنا

    يختال بين لواحظٍ وقدود

    As though amid the ships and canoes

    He walked with pride and virtue owed.

  5. وسنانُ أغيدُ كالغزال جفونه

    شركٌ يصيد به كماة الصيد

    His eyelids like a deer's antlers

    A snare with which to hunt prey spied.

  6. نثرتْ نظيمَ السّرد وهو مضاعف

    من دون قلب الهائم المعمود

    Prose he scattered in rhymed prose folded,

    Not like a love-sick heart's flood.

  7. حتى كأنَّ ظبي سليمان قضيت

    بفساد ما طبعتْ يدا داوود

    As though Solomon's deer you decreed

    To ruin what David's hand once hewed.
