1. قم نديمي فاسفك دمَ الزقّ

    فالأغصانُ في مأتمٍ من الأطيارِ

    Rise my friend and let your tears flow

    For the branches are in mourning for the birds

  2. وبكاءُ الراووق إذ قهقه

    الإبريق من حسن نغمة الأوتار

    And the turtledove weeps when

    The pitcher sings beautifully from the strings

  3. ساجدٌ للصليب منهُ وما

    يعرفُ دينَ الصليبِ والزنَّار

    Bowing to the cross, yet he

    Knows not the religion of the cross and bell

  4. وعقود السرور والدوح هذي

    في نظام وهذه في نثار

    The necklaces of joy and the basin here

    Are in order while these are strewn about

  5. وتأمَّل صنع الإله وما بثـ

    ـت قطار السماء في الأقطار

    Contemplate God's handiwork and how

    He sent the stars of the sky to the lands

  6. كلّ مخطوبة الخميلة تجلى

    في ثياب الأنوار والنوَّار

    Each beloved maiden adorned

    In robes of light and lanterns

  7. ألبستها الأنواء أوشحة الطلّ

    فمن ذلك انبهار البهار

    The zephyrs clothed her in cloaks of dew

    Thus the dazzling of the blossoms

  8. جعَّدت ماءها الصَّباحين حاكت

    ثوب أزهارها يداً آذار

    The dawns pleated her morning waters, her

    Dress of flowers woven by the hand of March

  9. عطرُ الجيب ساحبُ الكمّ يل

    قاهُ نسيم الصَّبا بليلَ الإزار

    The perfume of the fold, the loose shirt wafted

    By the morning breeze below the loincloth

  10. فكان الشقيق خدُّ حبيب

    أخجلتهُ لواحظ النظاَّر

    So the anemone was the cheek of the beloved

    Ashamed by the ogling of onlookers

  11. وكأنَّ النمَّام صبٌ أباح السـ

    ـقم منهُ ذخائر الأسرار

    As if the gossip were a cloud that allowed

    The defects to flow from hidden secrets

  12. في قدودٍ محفوفةٍ بخدودٍ

    من لدان الغصون والجلَّنار

    In braids adorned with cheeks

    Of supple branches and embers

  13. لستُ بالمسرف الملوم ولو انفقـ

    ـت فيها نفائس الأعمار

    I'm not profligate or blameworthy even if

    I spent the finest of my life upon them

  14. كم بها من عقود درٍّ وكم

    فيهنّ من درهم ومن دينار

    How many necklaces of pearls are on them

    How many dinars and gold coins are on them

  15. وكأنَّ السماءَ ترسُ حديدٍ

    كوبجوهُ بفضَّةٍ ونضار

    As if the sky were studded with iron

    Welded with silver and blossoms

  16. ومكانُ الهلال في السبع كا

    لقبضة لكنَّها بلا مسمار

    And the crescent in the “Seven” like

    A fist but without nails

  17. وكان الظلامَ إذ تغمضُ

    الأجفانُ فيهِ هبَّاتُ نقعِ مثار

    And the darkness when the

    Eyes close within it, gusts shake fruit

  18. وكأنّ النَّسرينِ نسرانِ والـ

    ـواقعُ في الأفق سابق الطيَّار

    As if the two eagles were eagles, and the

    Falling stars in the horizon outrun the flier

  19. وكأنّ البروق بيض سيوفٍ

    جردت في طلائع الأسحار

    As if the lightning were bared swords

    Unsheathed at the brink of dawn

  20. وكأنّ السُّقاةَ طلت من الـ

    ـدنّ دماءَ الهموم والأفكار

    As if the water-bearers squeezed from

    The oxhide the blood of worries and thoughts

  21. فأدل أبيض الأمانيِّ من سود اللـ

    ـيالي أن كنت طالب ثار

    So unleash the whitest of hopes against the blackness of

    Nights if you seek vengeance

  22. فرماح الشموع قد شهرت

    بين الندامى أسنَّةً من نار

    For the torches are brandished

    Among the repentant, flaming swords

  23. فأغتنمها حرباً تكون مع الـ

    ـليل وينفضُّ جمعها في النهار

    So seize it as a war against the

    Night, and its army disperses at daybreak
