My heart roves, enraptured by the heights of glory,

And an eyelid that does not rest upon the evening’s dusk.

I complain of separation from loved ones and homeland,

Moaning, while others are torn by yearning and sorrow.

I blame fate for the evils of creation,

Then it denies, while at times admitting.

What polished sword is there that rust hasn’t touched,

Or full moon not obscured and eclipsed?

I see a lightning flash of hope, lifeless,

Hope itself, while compassion shows no tenderness.

I seek the unattainable, its consequence

The consequence of love: intense passion and grief.

How often difficult endeavors bring no joy,

Yet still we toil on, in lifelong hardship.

Then, after harshness, his compassion stirs me,

In love I blink my eyes, longing for a glance.

When he bends his tall frame in the crooked lane,

My friends are just closeness and familiarity.

Love’s sweetness is but denial that hides it,

Beauty’s delight but soft speech and kind manner.

When he sings and acts reserved, it shakes her who fades,

Alike are the flirt and the open coquette.

In him seems fair only the blame of the blamer -

Yes, and ugly only sincere advice for him.

My friend, why have I engaged my soul with one

Who only brings estrangement or intends rejection?

So be patient, though days oppress bitterly,

From the harbor of patience come glory and honor.

Our days give and deny, hope and fear,

Thus has it been for generations long passed.
