1. يا خليلي تلك أعلامُ نجدِ

    فدعاني أعيد شوقي وأبدي

    O my friend, those are the flags of Najd

    He called me to renew my passion and ecstasy

  2. ملكَ الوجدُ رقَّ قلبي فح

    كم الصبر فيه علة سبيل التعدي

    The agony of passion softened my heart, so

    How much patience in it is the way of transgression

  3. يا جليد الفؤاد لستُ على الهـ

    ـجر ولا مؤلمِ البعادِ بجلد

    O ice of my heart, I am not able to

    Separation, nor the pain of remoteness with composure

  4. خلِّ صباّ يموت وجداً ويحيا

    بوصالٍ من الغواني وصدِّ

    Let the morning die of passion and live

    With the union of beauties and cheek

  5. كل شمسٍ لاثت حجاب قناعٍ

    أو سحاباً من مندليٍّ وندِّ

    Every sun that wore a veil or cover

    Of clouds from mandilis and wnd

  6. يا مهاة الصّريم ما زورة النّـ

    ـعف بأولى يدٍ لطيفك عندي

    O tilt of Srim, what is the weakness of

    Weakness with your gentle hand near me

  7. وألذُّ المزار ما ناله الطا

    لب عفواً من غير تنكيدِ وعد

    And the sweetest places to visit are those

    The seeker attained voluntarily without coercion or promise

  8. زار لا يرهبُ الوشاة ولا

    نخشى كعاداتنا سيوف معدِّ

    Visiting without fearing slanderers or

    Fearing, as is our custom, the swords of enemies

  9. فرشفنا سلاف ريقٍ على تر

    جس عينين يجتني وردَ خدِّ

    So we sipped the saliva of a mouth on

    Trembling eyes that reap roses of cheeks

  10. ورفعنا بها عروس دنانٍ

    طوّقوها من الحباب بعقد

    And we raised the bride of Danan

    They crowned her with love beads and necklaces

  11. أيّ وردٍ ببرده كم لهُ في

    القلب من لوعةٍ تشبُّ ووقد

    What rose with its coldness, how much

    Anguish it has in the heart, boiling and burning

  12. وخلاف القياس أن ينقع

    الظمآن حرَّ الغليل منه بشهد

    And contrary to logic, that the

    Thirsty drowns the heat of his thirst with honey

  13. حجبوني عن كسر رمّانتي

    نهدٍ شهيٍّ يقلُّها غصنُ قدِّ

    They prevented me from picking my

    Pomegranate, a plump breast that a branch of twisted branches restricts

  14. بسيوفٍ مثل اللواحظ قضبٍ

    ورماحٍ مثل المعاطف ملد

    With swords like glances and spears

    Like cloaks, flexible

  15. أسهرتني نجل العيون ونامت

    عن ولوعي بها ولاعجِ وجدي

    The youth of eyes made me sleepless, and she slept

    Oblivious to my torment, burning passion and ardour

  16. فغرامٌ هدتهُ ساعةُ قربٍ

    وهدوٌّ أضله يومُ بعد

    So passion that an hour of nearness guided

    And madness that a day of separation misguided

  17. إنَّ يوم الجمال لو كان عدلاً

    يسقط الحدُّ فيه قتلَ العمد

    If the day of beauty was just

    Punishment would cease in which premeditated murder falls

  18. أذكرتني العهودَ نفحةُ شوقٍ

    حسبوها شذا عرار ورند

    The breezes of longing reminded me of the

    Covenants, they thought it was the scent of aromatic herbs and basil

  19. فبكت لوعتي بها أعينُ السُّـ

    ـحب ورقت لها قلوب الصلد

    So my torment cried with it the eyes of

    Clouds and melted for it the hearts of mountains

  20. إذ بدور السقاة تجلو شموساً

    في كؤوسٍ طلعن أنجمَ سعد

    As the orbits of cups reveal suns

    In cups that rose lucky stars

  21. وقضيب من نوره في لثامٍ

    ومن النبت مائساً فوق برد

    And a staff of its light in a wraparound cloak

    And vegetation leaning on hail

  22. فسقاها سبطُ البنان من

    الأنواءِ وقفٌ على ثراها الجعد

    So the elite of beauties quenched it

    From the cups and standing over its pebbles are twisted hair

  23. وقطار السماء ضاحكة البر

    قِ وقد حثَّها حداءُ الرعد

    And the train of heaven smiling lightning

    And the thunder goaded it

  24. وإذا ما تألق الومض خلناه

    حساماً سللتهُ من غمده

    And if the sparkle shone we imagined it

    A sword, drawn stealthily from its sheath

  25. وكأنَّ الغدير تحت نسيمِ الريح

    عطفٌ يحول من تحت سرد

    And as if the pond under the breeze

    Is a fold that turns beneath the curtain

  26. كصفات الملك المؤيّد يهمي

    باسمَ الوجه في وجوه الوفد

    Like the qualities of the victorious king it ventures

    In the name of the face among the faces of delegates

  27. ملكٌ في الدنوِّ وابعد تلقا

    هُ جسيمَ النَّدى كريم العهد

    A king in closeness and farthest does his

    Gravity reach, generous and faithful

  28. وجهُ أفعالهِ ينير إذا اظلمَ

    خطبٌ وكفُّ نعماهُ تسدي

    The face of his deeds illuminates even if

    Speeches darken, and the palm of his favors extends

  29. فغدا كلُّ باخلٍ هازل

    الهمة يفري بنان مجدٍ بحدٍّ

    So every coward became brave

    Long in glory and wide in refuge and safety

  30. وطويل النجاد والباع في سلمٍ

    وحربِ قصير عمرِ الوعد

    Tall in nobility and of extensive

    Generosity and shortness of promised lifespan

  31. نال شأوَ العلى بنفس أبيٍّ

    وأبٍ ينتمي إلى خير جدِّ

    He attained the glory of the highborn with the soul of a father

    And a father belonging to the best ancestry

  32. فالطريفُ الحديثُ مستندٌ منهُ

    إلى تلكمُ الأصولِ التلد

    So the gentle, new speech, relaying from him

    To those solid, ancient roots, lasts

  33. كم حبا خائفاً بأمنٍ ومصدوعاً

    بجبرٍ منهُ وثغراً بسدِّ

    How much fearful love in security and cloven

    With his mending, and a mouth in his containment

  34. فهو حقاً أخو الشجاعة لحاً

    وأبو المكرمات وابنُ المجد

    He is truly the brother of courage, refined

    And the father of favors, and the son of glory

  35. تلحظ الأفقَ سمرهُ حين تسري

    بعيونٍ من الكواكب رمدُ

    The horizon watches his brownness when it flows

    With eyes of stars, sable

  36. ويردُ الصباحُ أيدي مذاكيهِ

    بوجهٍ من نقعها مسودِّ

    And the dawn returns the keys of his glories

    With a face from its sagacity, inked

  37. شائمٌ بارقَ السيوف إذا ما

    نشرت كفّهُ سحابةَ بند

    Censuring with the lightning of swords whenever

    His palm disperses a cloud of hail

  38. هيَ للنَّصر آيةٌ فإذا ما

    رفعتْ أردفتْ بآية حمد

    It is to victory a sign, so if

    Raised, it concludes with a sign of praise

  39. ضاق ظهرُ النجودِ عنها وقد عبّتْ

    وسالت بها بطونُ الوهد

    The backs of palms are too narrow for it, and it adorned

    And flowed with it the abdomens of valleys

  40. فهي في مهرق القضاء سطورٌ

    ويجيدِ الهضابِ مثلُ العقد

    So it is in the battlefields of destiny lines

    And it composes the plateaus like necklaces

  41. كل طيّارةٍ إلى كلّ ظاغٍ

    بجناحين من مدادٍ ولبد

    Every bird of prey to every rebel

    With two wings of ink and rags

  42. بازغٌ شمس فكرهِ عندما يصلد

    في الداجيات قدحُ الزند

    The sun of his intellect rises unsheathed whenever

    The firestone of flint ignites

  43. وأباحت رماحهُ من منيعٍ

    وحمى حدُّ سيفهِ من حدِّ

    And his spears made impregnable forts accessible

    And the edge of his sword protected from edge

  44. سخطهُ في الحروب نارُ جحيمٍ

    ورضاهُ في السّلم جنّةُ خلد

    His wrath in wars is hellfire

    And his approval in peace is the bliss of eternity

  45. أطلع الله منه والدَّهرُ داجٍ

    نجم دينٍ إلى المكارم يهدي

    God has ordained from him while time tended towards darkness

    A star of religion guiding to favors

  46. فاضلٌ فاضلٌ إذا أشكل الأمرُ

    سديدُ النُّهى شديد العقد

    Virtuous, virtuous, if the matter is ambiguous

    Rightly guiding, firm in principles

  47. لو سكتنا عن وصف يوميهِ لا

    جهلاً ولكنْ سكوتَ عيٍّ وجهد

    If we were silent describing his days, not

    Out of ignorance but the silence of fatigue and effort

  48. حدّثتنا الأقلام عن كون نعما

    هُ وقالت عنهُ سيوف الهند

    The pens told us of the blessings of his days

    And the swords of India spoke of him

  49. مانعٌ عفوهُ البلادَ وقد سال

    بها البحرُ من عداها بمدِّ

    It protected its country and the sea spilled from

    Its dam from his flow

  50. بعقابٍ يحوم فوق صقور

    ونجومٍ تجول من تحت أسد

    With an eagle that hovers over eagles

    And stars that roam beneath lions

  51. ذبَّ عنها ذباب ماضيهِ بأساً

    أيُّ مردٍ لها وأيُّ مردِّ

    It warded off the flies of its past with might

    What rebel for it and what rebellion

  52. حادثٌ صغَّر القديمَ فلا تجلبْ

    بياجوج بعدها والسدِّ

    An event that belittled all ancient ones, so do not bring

    Gog and Magog after it and the dam

  53. لو سطا وحدهُ لأغنى وأقنى

    غيرهَ منْ يحوط ملكاً بجند

    If he alone leveled, he would suffice to enrich

    And provide for others surrounding a king with soldiers

  54. أريحيٌّ وجدتهُ خيرَ من يطرى

    ويرجى يومي قصيدٍ وقصد

    Ariha I found him best of those who fly

    And whom to hope for in ode and aim

  55. وهبتني يداهُ مجداً ولم يسمعْ

    بخلقٍ سواهُ واهبِ مجد

    His hands endowed me with glory though no

    Other trait but giving glory was heard of

  56. علَّمتني كسبَ العلي خطراتٌ

    منه تأبى سوى نوالٍ ورفدِ

    His adventures taught me to earn highness

    That refuse other than attainment and plenty

  57. وكثيرٌ من أمَّهُ فثناهُ

    زاهداً في اللُهى ولا مثل زهدي

    And much of his mother distracted him

    An ascetic regarding worldly amusement, none resembles my asceticism

  58. يوسعُ المادحين منَاً ونقداً

    سالماً من كريهِ منٍّ ونقدِ

    Expanding the eulogizers' provision and payment

    Greetings from the ugly of gifts and payment

  59. فضح الأقدمين جودك طبعاً

    فتمتَّع بعامك المستجدِّ

    Your generosity surpassed that of ancients in nature

    So enjoy your novel year

  60. ابق ضافي ثوب النعيم قرير العين

    نضرَ الجناب صافي الوردِ

    Remain ample, the breeze of bliss, serene of eye

    Fresh of side, clear of complexion

  61. أنت معنى الدنيا ولولاك

    لم يفضح بشيء من هزلها والجدِّ

    You are the purpose of life, without you

    Its jest and seriousness would be worthless
