1. لأمرٍ أطعتُ الحكمَ في جانب الجهلِ

    وقد ظعنت جملٌ ويا لك من جملِ

    I obeyed the decree in ignorance

    And many a camel was stabbed, O what a camel!

  2. مقيماً على حزن الديار وسهلها

    وكم لوعةٍ في الحزن منها وفي السهلِ

    Staying sad over the ruins and plains

    How much anguish is in sadness, in it and in the plains

  3. أفاضت دموعَ العين منّي منازلٌ

    طللتُ على إطلالهنَّ دمّ العذلِ

    Tears streamed from my eyes in waves

    I looked upon their streaming, the tears of sadness

  4. مشت في عذارى خالياتٍ من الهوى

    ولكنها شغلٌ لقلب بلا شغلِ

    I walked among lonely, deserted encampments

    But it was a preoccupation for a heart without preoccupation

  5. فيا قصرَ الليل التَّمام بوصلها

    ويا طولَ عمرِ الوعد منهنَّ والمطلِ

    Oh night whose perfection is in visiting her

    And oh lifelong promise from her and waiting

  6. وبي أعينٌ فيها فتورٌ وصحَّة

    فكم قتلت حيّاً وتحيي من القتلِ

    In me are languid, lively eyes

    How many they've killed alive and revived from killing

  7. وما لحظها إلاَّ سيوفٌ قواضبٌ

    وآيتها ما في الوجوه من الصقلِ

    Her glances are nothing but sharp swords

    Her signs are the polish in the faces

  8. حلفتُ لها بالأعين النُّجل صادقاً

    لقد ضاق باع الصبر بالأعين النجلِ

    I swore to her, sincerely, by the soft eyes

    Patience has run out, by the soft eyes

  9. وهيف خصورٍ ضعفها موجب الضنى

    وحسنُ وجوه عزّها سببُ الذلِّ

    The weakness of delicate waists causes sorrow

    The glory of beautiful faces causes humiliation

  10. جنيت ثمار الحسن باللحظ والأسى

    فطرفيَ في روضٍ وقلبيَ في محلِ

    I reaped the fruits of beauty by glancing and sadness

    So my eyes are in a garden and my heart in a place

  11. وقد زعمت لمياءُ إنْ قد سلوتها

    ويا راحتي لو كان في الأرض ما يسلي

    And Mayya claimed to have consoled me

    Oh my comfort, if only something on earth could console

  12. هي البدر أسري منه في نور وجهه

    فاعثر في ليل الصبابة والخبلِ

    She is the full moon I am spellbound by her light

    So stumble in the night of youth and confusion

  13. ظلمتُ فهل من ناصرٍ في ولايةٍ

    من الحسن لا يخشى عليها من العزلِ

    I wronged, is there a supporter in authority

    Of beauty, who does not fear removal?

  14. أظلُّ وقلبي خافقٌ غير ساكنٍ

    بخافقة القرطين ساكنة الحجلِ

    I live in shade and my heart beats restlessly

    With the beating of chirping partridges at rest

  15. ممنَّعة تخشى الجريرة من دمي

    وما هيَ من قتل المحّبين في حلِّ

    She fears my blood though she's innocent of killing lovers

    And she is not for slaying the enamored

  16. تعجَّبتُ من إعطافها وجفونها

    لسكر بلا خمرٍ وحلٍ بلا كحلِ

    I marveled at her flirtatious, intoxicated eyes

    Drunken without wine, dissolving without kohl

  17. تزين دموعُ الصبِ صفحة جيدها

    كما زين جيد الغصن في لؤلؤ الطلِ

    The tears of a youth adorned her cheek

    As pearls adorn the branch of the willow

  18. إذا ما التقينا موّهت عبراتها

    وأين دموع الذلِّ من أدمع الدلِّ

    When we meet, she hides her tears

    Where are the tears of humiliation to tears of affection?

  19. وليست لحاظاً رانيات تظافرت

    على جلدي بل رامياتٍ على النَّبلِ

    Hers aren't amorous glances combined

    Against my skin, but arrows against targets

  20. وجائرة الأحكام هلاَّ تعلّمتْ

    من الملك المنصور ما صفةُ العدلِ

    Would the unjust judge learn

    From Al-Mansour the qualities of justice?
