    The meeting of loved ones is like the meeting of eyes

    Between hearts and eyelids

  3. وتأمَّل بين الهوادج والأطـ

    ـلال منها مصارع العشَّاقِ

    Contemplate between the tents and ruins

    The battlegrounds of passionate lovers

  4. فقسيٌّ تهدي ولسن بأو

    تارٍ سهاماً تصمي بلا أفواقِ

    A tough, fair-skinned beauty who aims

    Arrows that strike true without blinking

  5. بي بيضاءَ فعلها فعل سمراءَ انـ

    ـثنت من العوالي الدّقاقِ

    A white-skinned beauty acted like a brown-skinned

    Who swayed from the tall, slender date palms

  6. زيَّن الفرعُ قدَّها مثل ما

    زينت لدان الغصون بالأوراقِ

    The branch adorned her neck like

    The leaves adorned the tender twigs

  7. لو تطيقُ الحمامُ ألقت عليه

    ما بأجيادها من الأطواقِ

    If only the pigeons could bear it

    They would shed their bracelets upon her

  8. أخدمت حسنها سويداءَ قلبي

    فهي لا تهتدي لسبل الإباقِ

    My heart served her beauty faithfully

    Yet she cannot find the path of fidelity

  9. أيُّ شمسٍ مغيبها لي سمومٌ

    وسموم الشموس بالإشراقِ

    What sun with its setting brings me poison

    While the sun's poison is in its rising

  10. كلَّما خوطبت على حبس قلبي

    وقّعت للدموع بالإطلاقِ

    Whenever she is reproached for capturing my heart

    She signs for the tears to flow free

  11. فسواء ما بدَّدت فوق خدّيَّ

    وما نظَّمته فوق التراقيِ

    Whether I scatter upon my cheek

    Or string together over pages

  12. ضحكتْ عند وصف شوقي ولم

    تدرِ بأنَّ البكاء للأشواقِ

    She laughed at the description of my passion

    Not knowing tears are for longing

  13. لم يكن قبل وجهها ليّ علمٌ

    أنَّ ماء الجمال للإحراقِ

    Before her face I had no knowledge

    That the water of beauty is for burning

  14. هل مجيرٌ من الدجى فهو طفل

    لم يشب من قطيعة وفراقِ

    Is there any shelter from the darkness?

    He is but a child not yet weaned from separation

  15. طال حتى حسبتُ أنَّ النجوم الأفـ

    ـق من بطءِ سيرها في وثاقِ

    It was so long I thought the stars in the horizon

    Moved slowly in their orbits

  16. وخفيّ الوميض ينمى كما يسـ

    ـرع سقط االزنادِ في الحرَّاقٍ

    And the dim twinkle grew as the falling

    Embers quickened in the blaze

  17. فلو أنَّ الصباح يجدى لأعـ

    ـطته يدا يوسف مع الإملاقِ

    If only the dawn could help, I would give it

    The hand of Joseph with the wine cup
