    The fate of the wanderer and the life of the desert,

  2. سارية تحت لواء الغرب

    عابسة الوجه ضحوك القلب

    Moving under the banner of the West,

    Stern of face, smiling of heart.

  3. قلت وقد باءت بقتل الجدب

    سعت بومض أم سعت بغضب

    I said, though barrenness was slain,

    Did she move with a lightning flash or move with wrath?

  4. جادت على الوهد معاً والهضب

    بلؤلوء رطب بغير ثقب

    She was generous on plateau and dune alike,

    With ripe juicy fruits without holes.

  5. ذات نسيم خصر المهب

    يعثر ضعفاً بذيول السحب

    With a breeze around her slender waist,

    Stumbling weakly with the tails of clouds,

  6. وبارق يهدي سراة الركب

    لمع الثنايا في الرضاب العذب

    And lightning guiding the caravans,

    Her braids shining in pleasant thunder,

  7. وراعد حن حنين الصب

    أعلق من برح هوى بخلب

    And thunder humming the song of rain,

    More clinging than the love of one enamored,

  8. عم بأهل عامه ورحب

    والبس الأرض ثياب العصب

    It rained on her people and open spaces,

    And clothed the land in robes of greenery,

  9. وعلم الماء عناق العشب

    شكر الثرى لو دقة المرب

    And taught the water the embrace of grass,

    The soil would thank her if she struck with hail,

  10. شكر المطايا والجياد القب

    أبيض وجه الفعل أحوى الشعب

    The horses and steeds would thank her for rain,

    With a bright deed and dark-skinned people,

  11. يحلم عن طيش الرياح النكب

    سهل منال الجود سهل الحجب

    She dreams, heedless of the winds of calamity,

    Easy to attain, noble yet modest,

  12. يدر أخلافاً بغير حلب

    ويجعل الوادي مكان القعب

    She conceives without milking,

    And makes the valley a pasture,

  13. مخضراً حلى السنين الشهب

    كالفعلة الحسناء بعد الذنب

    Green are the years however old,

    Like the beautiful woman after sin,

  14. وفرحة الأحشاء بعد الكرب

    ولطف المحبوب بالمحب

    And the joy of entrails after distress,

    And the kindness of the beloved to the lover,

  15. يكاد من صافحه من قرب

    يعرف فيه خيلاء العجب

    Whoever clasps her hand from nearby

    Would know in her the arrogance of pride,

  16. هزة عطف ذي السماح الندب

    يجر ذيلاً في الفضاء الرحب

    A sway of compassion for one who makes amends,

    Dragging her train through the vast space,

  17. يجمع بين حوته والضب

    ضاف ولم يعلق غبار العتب

    Combining her strength and gentleness,

    She hosted without raising dust of blame,

  18. ولا تحدته حداة السب

    ذو راحة مبسوطة بالخصب

    Nor was she provoked by the sharpness of censure,

    At ease, prosperous and fertile,

  19. شلت وكفت من حواشي الخطب

    وقدحت في الماء زند الشهب

    She restrained and suppressed the peripheries of discourse,

    And sparked in the water the flint of resolve,

  20. يسهل منحاً في الزمان الصعب

    عين أظلتنا بنوء القلب

    She facilitates gifts in hard times,

    An eye that shaded us with its tears,

  21. جاءت تهادي كتهادي السرب

    متأقة الحوض جموم الغرب

    She came caressing like the caressing of a flock,

    With proud hips and blonde hair,

  22. كاسبة للحمد أي كسب

    نعم قرى الثاوي وزاد الركب

    Gaining praise, what a gain!

    Yes, settlements of the sedentary and provisions for travelers,

  23. ما شئت من فاكهة وأب

    نعم ومرعى مونق وقضب

    Whatever fruit and water you wish,

    Yes, and grazing green and dry,

  24. ومن رياض محدقات غلب

    رواقص فيها قدود القضب

    And from gardens, dense thickets,

    Dancers among them, swaying branches,

  25. في حبر مدبجات الهدب

    والطير فيهن قيان الشرب

    In a sea of waving grass,

    And birds among them quenching thirst.

  26. ما بين سجع مطرب ونن

    هب فيها العيش أي نهب

    What's between mellifluous poet and chant,

    Life in them is pleasure, what plunder!

  27. كف عرام للصبا وشغب

    أسمح يوم لهوها من كعب

    Restraining the insolent and frivolous,

    A day of leisure for their playfulness,

  28. زيارة ما نغصت بغب

    من قبل لذع حادث أو كسب

    A visit not spoiled by enmity,

    Before the sting of mishap or gain.

  29. ألحق بالعجم جموع العرب

    من غير ما طعن وغير ضرب

    I made the non-Arabs into Arab hordes,

    Without stabbing or striking,

  30. والناس في سلم المنى كالحرب

    وكل شيء كائن للسلب

    And people in the peace of purpose like war,

    And everything existing for plunder,

  31. وليس يبقى غير وجه الرب

    Nothing remains but the face of the Lord.
