1. لا تُنكري سقَمي ولا تسهيدي

    أبلى جديدُ الدهر كل جديدِ

    Do not deny my sickness, or my wasting away,

    Time's vicissitudes wear out all that's new,

  2. أحسبتِ إن جوارحي من جلمدٍ

    أو بين جانحتي قلب حديدِ

    Did you think my limbs were frozen,

    Or my heart made of iron within my chest?

  3. فارقتُ محموداً فما صرف النوى

    عندي ولا الحدثانُ بالمحمود

    I parted from Mahmoud, yet my resolve

    Did not waver, nor did the two Hidhans with Mahmoud.

  4. طرقتُهُ حادثةٌ سواءٌ عندها

    نفس الجبان ومهجةُ الصنديد

    An ordeal befell us all equally,

    The coward's soul and the courageous one's mettle.

  5. تُردي عقابَ الجوِ مثلَ بغائهِ

    وتُميت ليثَ الغاب مثل السيدِ

    It makes the sky's punishment like its favor,

    And kills the forest's lion like the master.

  6. سيَّانِ فيها الضبُّ تحت وهادهِ

    والعصمُ فوق ذوائبٍ ونجودِ

    The wolf and the sheep are equal beneath it

    As are the firm and the pliant, the generous and the stingy.

  7. أخنتْ على لبدء ولقمانٍ وأوقعَ

    صرفُها بربيعةٍ ولبيدِ

    It wronged Lobaid and Lokman and ruined

    Their luck, and toppled Ghiylan before and

  8. وأطاح غيلاناً وأوفى قبلَهُ

    ثم أنثنى بطشاً إلى مسعودِ

    Then bent its tyranny toward Mas'ud.

    Life was not free of turmoil and grief,

  9. لا كانت الدنيا فاية عيشةٍ

    تصفو من التكدير والتنكيد

    I grieve for its transient glories,

    Though to enjoy what exists is proper.

  10. نأسى على المعدوم من أعراضها

    والشأنُ لو متعتَ بالموجود

    No state of calamity or blessing

    Lacks a gloating or despondent envious one.

  11. ما أخلُ حالةَ نكبةٍ أو نعمةٍ

    من شامتٍ أو غابطٍ وحسود

    When they allow whom I love, they forbid me

    A day of union after a year of estrangement.

  12. فإذا سمحن بمن أودُّ أعضني

    عن يوم وصلٍ منه عامَ صدود

    He was nothing but unsheathed then sheathed,

    Woe to that unsheathed then sheathed sword!

  13. ما كان إلا صارماً أغمدنهُ

    ويلي لذاك الصَّارم المغمود

    A branch from a garden of Sa'did,

    How much glory it grew, and noble deeds!

  14. غصنٌ ذوي روضةٍ من سؤددِ

    كم أنبتت للمجد من أملودِ

    A crescent moon frightening you when it appears,

    Had days allowed it more time.

  15. وهُلال داجيةٍ يروعك مبدراً

    لو سامحت أيامُه بمزيدِ

    I yearn for him though our promised reunion

    Is neither due nor to be returned.

  16. أشتاقهُ مع أن سالف عهدهِ

    لا بالمعاد لنا ولا المردودِ

    He settled into dust yet remains near, his figure

    Not distant from imagination's eye.

  17. سكن الثرى فلهو البعيد وشخصهُ

    من ناظر الأفكار غيرُ بعيدِ

    My envious foes think stillness means defeat

    While a heart with feeling is not frozen.

  18. ويظنُّ حاسديَ السكونَ جلادةً

    والقلبُ ذو الحركاتِ غيرُ جليدِ

    The land's expanse was too narrow so he found

    No place to attain what he desired.

  19. ضاقتْ به سعة البلاد فلم يجد

    وجهاً يبلغه إلى مقصودِ

    How to go and where is his path

    When sorrow ties gatherings and bosoms?

  20. كيف الذهاب وأين أين سبيلهُ

    والحزن أي جوامعٍ وقيود

    Blessed is he, a witness from Waleed,

    Whose fathers and forefathers were generous.

  21. لله درك من وليدٍ شاهدٍ

    بإباء آباء لهُ وجدود

    Imagination spoke of his superior innate disposition,

    Inherited before his cultured birth.

  22. نطقتْ مخايلهُ بفضل التالد المو

    روث قبل الطارف المولود

    It was as if I saw and heard him

    On the day of the tumult and public gathering.

  23. فكأنني شاهدتُه وسمعتُه

    يومَ الوغى والمحفل المشهود

    Beneath that silence lies much astute wisdom

    Had time allowed its clouds to spread.

  24. كم تحت ذاك الصمت بارق فطنةٍ

    لو أمهلت نشرت سحائبَ جود

    A branch ennobled by its roots' renown,

    And the roots, what testimonies and witnesses!

  25. فرعٌ تفضلهُ شهادةُ أصله

    والأصل أي أدلةٍ وشهودِ

    I wouldn't blame your nature for my sorrow

    If my fire for you had permanence.

  26. ما كنت بالشاكي نواك إلى الردى

    لو أنَّ ناري فيك ذات خمود

    A glance melted my bitterness and tears

    After long harshness and frost.

  27. لفحٌ أذابَ تصبُّري ومدامعي

    من بعد طول قساوةٍ وجمود

    You provided, while I remained, grief

    Nothing else could provide in wares.

  28. زودتني وأنا المقيم كآبةً

    ما كان أغناني عن التزويدِ

    Had you lived, life would not be so base

    And my share of you not so paltry.

  29. لو عشتَ لم تكن الحياةُ ذميمةً

    ولكان حظي منك غير زهيد

    You settled wild hearts after soft intimacy,

    Then suddenly the customary was strange.

  30. ولقد سكنتَ جوانحاً خفاقةً

    من بعد لين أسرة ومهود

    I submit at times to despair's judgment of you

    And other times weep, confused and searching.

  31. فوجئتَ بالمعهود إلا أنني

    عاينتُ وجداً ليس بالمعهودِ

    I pretend to blame you while my passion's true

    And it is the missing one, not you.

  32. أسلو لحكم اليأس فيك وتارة

    أبكي بكاءَ الهائم المعمود

    My grief, as death's weakness closes his eyes,

    After that effort and wasting away,

  33. وأخادع اللوام فيكَ وظاهرٌ

    نفسُ الشجي وأنه المفؤودِ

    My hand roams his cooling body,

    My tears pouring over every plain.

  34. أسفي ووهنُ الموتِ يُغمض جفنَهُ

    من بعد ذاك الجهد والتسهيد

    Restless for yourself, gone, past,

    And shocked you were that arrival, foretold.

  35. ويدي تجولُ على بضاضةِ جسمهِ

    جولان دمعي فوق كلِ صعيدِ

    I'm accustomed to you like a childhood friend,

    So it stole you, stealing the gentle sweetheart.

  36. قلقاً لذاتك الراحل الماضي

    ودهشتُه لذاك النازل الموعود

    I let visiting loved ones go for a night

    That made me forget nights of union and intertwining.

  37. لألفته إلفَ الصبا فسلبتهُ

    سلبَ المحبِّ دُمى الحسان الغيد

    I may forget wine and its preaching

    With intoxication by the daughter of the grape cluster.

  38. طلقتُ غادات النسيب لليلةٍ

    أنستْ ليالي عالج وزرود

    But death destroyed Caysum and her sister

    And wiped out Aad, then Thamud after.

  39. ولربما أنسى الخُمار وخطبَهُ

    نشواتُ لبك بابنة العنقود

    How many alive have left empty wells

    And a palace standing there built?

  40. والموت أفنى قبلُ طسماً وأختها

    وأباد عاداً متبعاً بثمودِ

    In death's law it's clear,

    No difference between wretched or fortunate.

  41. كم غادر الحيانِ من بئرٍ معطَّلـ

    ـة ومن قصرٍ هناك مشيد

    It took the hand of one who disliked guidance

    And counted the pigeons of the generous.

  42. لا فرقَ في شرع المنية ظاهرٌ

    بين الشقي الجدِ والمسعودِ

    It obeyed Pharaoh and Moses after

    Being warned and specified by speech and calling.

  43. أخذت يد الطوفاة من كره الهدى

    وعد الحمامُ على نزيل الجودي

    It came upon the tribes until not one

    Witness or witnessed remained of them.

  44. وأطاع فرعوناً وموسى بعدما

    نوجي وخصص بالكلام ونودي

    It made Solomon grieve and his family weep,

    The one who makes Solomon weep over David.

  45. وأتى على الأسباط حتى لم يجزْ

    عن شاهدٍ منهم ولا مشهودِ

    The speech of the birds, what a miracle!

    Yet the two burdens, what troops can compare?

  46. أردى سليماناً وأبكى أهله

    مُبكي سليمان على داوود

    The beasts, the wind, and the plains it stripped

    Strutting under its flowing locks.

  47. وخطابُ جنس الطير أيةُ آيةٍ

    لم تغنِ والثقلان أي جنود

    Where is the serpent's lair where the pebbles

    Hide over the outstretched plain?

  48. والوحش والريح الرخاء وجرده

    تختال تحت دلاصهِ المسرود

    Alas, courage and wealth cannot rescue

    From the grip of that day, loss itself.

  49. أين القنا الخطي حيث يخفُّ بالكر

    سي فوق بساهِ الممدودِ

    Many generations passed between them

    Their endings too many to count.

  50. هيهات أن تُنجي الشجاعةُ والغنى

    من بطش ذاك اليوم نفس فقيد

    Every living being, like Muhammad,

    Has an exemplar, and Muhammad is the praised stance.

  51. وثوتْ قرونٌ بين ذاك كثيرةٌ

    جلَّت مصارعها عن التعديد

    How many lessons lie in the places of death

    Of his family, darkened by blackening.

  52. ولكل حي أسوة بمحمد

    ومحمد ذو الموقف المحمود

    So emulate the supporter, the poisoned one, the killed one,

    And the dragged one to Yazid.

  53. كم في مصارع آله من عبرةٍ

    سوداء عوها من التسويد

    And Mashrifiya, the red wound,

    The air thicker in darkness.

  54. فتأسَّ بالمأموم والمسموم والـ

    ـمقتول والمجلوب نحو يزيد

    There was a kingdom containing Ghayth

    Had Nu'man lived after Ubayd.

  55. والمشرفية من شقيقٍ أحمرٍ

    والجوُّ أكلفُ في مسوحٍ سودِ

    Ask about Ziyad and his son, and return

    To Amr - ask, did he live after Sa'eed?

  56. قد كان في ملكٍ حواهُ غيطةٌ

    لو خلد النعمانُ بعد عبيدِ

    Marwan's youth wrung out his soul,

    Violating a pact and covenants.

  57. سل عن زياد وابنه وارجع إلى

    عمروٍ فسل هل عاش بعد سعيد

    He extracted the souls of Mus'ab and his brother

    Obeying hatreds, not the Worshipped.

  58. أجرى فتى مروان مهجةً نفسه

    نكثاً لإيمانٍ له وعهودِ

    He sinned against Asma in an unforgiveable

    Sin that cracked the essence of the rocky-cliff heart.

  59. واستلَّ روحي مصعب وشقيقه

    في طاعة الأحقاد لا المعبودِ

    He weakened so he died, almost extending

    An excuse had he lived, the lost vanished one.

  60. وجنى على أسماء فيهِ جنايةً

    صدعت فؤاد الصخرة الصيخودِ

    No day has passed, or is passing,

    Without a beginning to successive calamities.

  61. ووهى فمات وكاد يبسط عذره

    لو عاش بعد الهالكِ المفقودِ

    It surprised the Khawarnaq and Sudayr tribes

    Like the companions of the day of the elevated places and trench.

  62. لم يخلُ يومٌ كان أو هو كائنٌ

    من مبدئ للنائبات معيد

    It picked off the Abbasids distinctively

    However much equipment and number they accumulated.

  63. فجأ الخورنق والسدير كما دهى

    أصحاب يوم الرس والأخدودِ

    So it came upon the Saffah, Mansur, Mahdi, Hadi and every rightly-guided one.

    It raided the forbearing and foolish equally, sparing

  64. ونحا بني العباس منهُ مفرقٌ

    ما جمعوا من عدةٍ وعديدِ

    No father or newborn child of theirs.

    Such is the days' way with their sons,

  65. فأتى على السفاح والمنصور والمهد

    ي والهادي وكلِّ رشيدِ

    Each empowered, with respite and harvest.

    It tore down the Banu Sasan and their kingdom,

  66. دهم الحليمَ مع السفيهِ ولم يخم

    عن والدٍ منهم ولا مولودِ

    Destroying the people's system by scattering.

    As if they did not shine white pearls

  67. هي شيمة الأيام في أبنائها

    من قائمٍ ذي مهلةٍ وحصيدِ

    In noble rain, nor clouds of lances.

    Many a year, its bounties rained on them

  68. بزَّت بني ساسان واطدملكهم

    ورمتْ نظامَ القومِ بالتبديد

    With clouds of generosity and oceans of judiciousness.

    Son of Ala and brother of battled kings.

  69. فكأنهم ما أبرقوا بيضَ الظبي

    في قطر نبلٍ أو غمام بنودِ

    It dragged him from his doors and palaces

    And seized his banded crown.

  70. ولربَّ عامٍ غيثَ من آلائهم

    بسحاب جودٍ أو بحار وجودِ

    Within it are gardens like gardens he settled

    If only this world were the lasting abode.

  71. هذا أنو شروان آخرُ قومه

    نجلُ العلى وأخو الملوك الصيدِ

    With a stream flowing, a harmony bending branch,

    Warbling birdsong,

  72. نزعته من أبوابه وقصوره

    وتحكمت في تاجهِ المعقودِ

    And at his hands every groomed horse

    To please in aiming and climbing.

  73. وبها جنانٌ كالجنان يحلّها

    لو أن هذي الدارَ دارُ خلودِ

    Dunes of sand, also surging seas,

    Branches of acacia, also twisting smoke columns.

  74. من جدول يسعى وغصن أراكةٍ

    يُثنى ونغمة طائرٍ غريدِ

    And when his bowels thirsted for rain’s coolness,

    The sweetness of taste raised him.

  75. ولديهِ كل جريدةٍ خمصانةٍ

    ترضيك في التصويب والتصعيدِ

    So it was as if it never provided him

    A settled life, nor witnessed visiting delegations.

  76. كثبانُ رملٍ وهي فعم روادفٍ

    وغصون بانٍ وهي هيف قدودِ

    Nay, his ministers did not tarry with him

    To solve knotty problems and contracts.

  77. وإذا شكت أحشاؤه ظمأ الجوى

    علَّته من عذبِ المذاق برود

    And the earth dances with steeds

    Like how ship hulls dance with lightning.

  78. فكأنها لم تغنَ منه بساكنٍ

    دهراً ولم تشهد لومٍ وفودِ

    It erased his beauty and the sign of his justice

    With cuts of fragmentation and dispersal.

  79. كلا ولا حفّن به وزراؤهُ

    لبيان مشكلةٍ وحلِّ عقودِ

    He may still exist somewhere, unaware of his value,

    A refuge for the expelled, pressed juice of the squeezed.

  80. والأرض ترقص بالصواهل مثلما

    رقصت متونُ سحائبٍ برعودِ

    And harbor for the hopeful’s steeds, meeting place

    For spreading rumors and messages.

  81. نسختْ محاسنهُ وآيةَ عدله

    بقطائع التشتيت والتشريد

    Had you witnessed his day, you'd know

    No difference between plank and pillar.

  82. ولقد يكون وليس يجهل قدره

    مأوى الطريد وعصرة المنجودِ

    You'd see those armies as meager

    Though they packed the chests with brave warriors.

  83. ومحطّ رحل الآملين وملتقى

    ساري فيوج بشائرٍ وبريد

    Had they the means to repel fate

    What arms and muscles could avail?

  84. لو كنتَ شاهدَ يومه لعلمتَ ألـ

    ـلا فرقَ بين قواضبٍ وغمودِ

    With Indian blades, not one cheek of theirs

    Lacks furrowing and hollowing.

  85. ورأيت هاتيك الجيوشَ قليلةً

    مع أنها ملأت صدور البيد

    As if each surging sweet water wave

    They donned, pleated and folded.

  86. ولو أنهم قدروا على دفع الردى

    لثنتهُ أي سواعد وسعود

    But it is fate none can evade

    Its surging source.

  87. وبحدٍ كل صفيحةٍ هنديةٍ

    ما في خدودهم من التوريدِ

    So go as youth went, bidding farewell

    With refinements of submission and praise.

  88. وكأن كل غدير ماء رايقٍ

    لبسوهُ وهو مضافُ التجعيدِ

    Long have I rebutted ignorance about you two

    If only I listened to rebuttal.

  89. لكنهُ القدر الذي ما لامرئٍ

    مندوحة عن حوضه المورودِ

    Your burial place is watered by the downpour

    Of every cloud with greening, vitalizing tears.

  90. فاذهب كما ذهب الشباب مودعاً

    بلطائف التسليم والتحميدِ

    Every barren soil writhes beneath it

    With buds under wreaths and contracts.

  91. ولطالما فنّدتُ جهلاً فيكما

    لو أنني أصغى إلى التفنيدِ

    The cherished drops neither harmful nor vile,

    Though perhaps some rain not wholesome.

  92. وسقى ثراك ملثُّ كل سحابةٍ

    دمعاً يخضر وجنةَ الجلمودِ

    It's as if every swaying palm tree bends its fronds

    To you with the date palm's dew.

  93. يختالُ منه كل تربٍ عاطلٍ

    للنور تحت قلائدٍ وعقودِ

    I scattered my tears' prose over you,

    Scant consolation were it choicest verse.

  94. محمودة القطرات غير ذميمةٍ

    ولربَّ غيثٍ وهو غير حميدِ

    When I pass by your tomb, my dependence

    On you vexes me after your noble remains.

  95. فكأنَّ كل خميلةٍ مطولةٍ

    تثني إليك لمى المهاة الرودِ

    Patience and surrender, for the Almighty's will

    Comes with what no soul desired.

  96. ولقد نثرت عليك نظمَ مدامعي

    ويقلُّ أن لو كان نظم فريدِ

    My soul healed and its panic calmed

    By trusting in God's pardon and oneness.

  97. وإذا مررت على ضريحك ساءني

    مني عولي عنك ثاني جيدِ

    God's door is not locked shut

    Against one seeking, nor blockaded.

  98. صبراً وتسليماً فربَّ إرادةٍ

    جاءت بما لم ترضِ نفسَ مريدِ

  99. ولقد شفى نفسي وسكّن روعها

    ثقتي بعفو الله والتوحيدِ

  100. وبأنَّ باب الله ليس بمغلقٍ

    في وجه قاصدهِ ولا مسدودِ
