1. في لأذني عن كل لاحٍ صممُ

    لولا الدمّى ما فاض من جفني الدَّمُ

    My ears are deaf to every whisper,

    Were it not for tears, no tear would flow from my eyelids,

  2. جنانُ حسنٍ عاشقٌ يدخلها

    بطرفهِ معذبٌ منَعَّم

    The gardens of beauty are for a lover to enter,

    Tormented by a glance, restrained and refined.

  3. رضوانها وهو لقلبي مالك

    والقلب من إعراضه جهنَّم

    Her happiness is the possessor of my heart,

    And my heart is hell from her disdain.

  4. يا صاحبي وأين منّي صاحب

    هل لك علمٌ كيف أقوى العلمِ

    O my friend, where is a friend to me?

    Do you know how I can strengthen resolve?

  5. ميدانُ لهوٍ صار ميدانَ وغّى

    فيه تلاقي ادمعي والدَيم

    A place of joy has become a place of calamity,

    Where my tears and blood meet.

  6. كأنًّما عاش لبيدٌ نادباً

    وقام يبكي مالكاً متتِم

    As if Labid lived grieving,

    And stood crying for Malik utterly absorbed.

  7. بي بدويُّ الزيّ عند مثلهِ

    تُنسى العهودُ وتضاع الذّمِم

    In my Bedouin attire I am forgotten before him,

    Vows are forgotten and reputations dismissed.

  8. معتقلٌ خطيةً من قدهِ

    وبالحياءِ وجههُ مُلتثم

    Imprisoned for a sin from his bow,

    And by shyness his face covered.

  9. يميتنا يأساً ويُحيي طمعاً

    من مقلتهِ صحةٌ وسقم

    He brings us despair and revives hope,

    From his glances - wellness and illness.

  10. له من الورد وغضِ لبانِ وال

    ياقوتِ خدٌ وقوامٌ وفم

    From roses and moist laban and red

    Ruby - his cheek, stature and mouth.

  11. يمنعنا وهو ربيعٌ خدَّه

    فهو على الحاظنا مُحرَّم

    He denies us, and he is the spring whose cheek

    We crave, so he is forbidden to our embrace.

  12. وافي خيالاً منهُ صبحٌ أشهبٌ

    لهُ من الليل جوادٌ أدهم

    An imaginary dawn from him is reddish-gray,

    The night has for him a black steed.

  13. فبات كالدينار في كفَّي وبدرُ الت

    تم في كفّ السماءِ درهم

    So he spent the night like a dinar in my palms

    And the full moon spent the night like a dirham in the palm of the sky.

  14. يعلني بكأسهِ فمن رأى

    بدراً تنال من يديهِ الأنجم

    He tantalizes me with his cup, so if one saw

    The full moon taking stars from his hands.

  15. له نسيبي ولمدحي كلهِ

    مظفَّرُ الدين الجواد المنُعم

    My companion and all my praise are his

    Victorious in religion, generous, refined.

  16. والملكُ الظاَّفرُ بحرُ كفّهِ

    يرسو به الخوفُ وتطفو النِعَم

    The victorious king, ocean of his palm,

    Fear anchors on him and blessings float.

  17. وعزمهُ في كلِ خطب جذوةٌ

    يشبها ماءُ الندى والكرم

    His determination in every matter is an ember

    Resembling the water of dew and generosity.

  18. وأعجبا منُه ومن طوفانه

    به إذا خيف الرَّدى يعتصم

    More wondrous than him and his flood -

    Through it, when havoc is feared, safety is found.

  19. هو النجاةُ وأخوه الملحُ لا

    يسلمُ من أخطاره المستلم

    He is salvation, and his brother salt is not

    Spared from its dangers by the submissive.

  20. يهدي له الدرِّ ولولا وصفهُ

    لم تفقّهِ الأفكارُ كيفَ ينظم

    He gives away pearls, and were it not for his description,

    Minds would not understand how to compose poetry.

  21. وصلتُ منه سببي بماجدٍ

    يمتثلُ الدهرُ له ما يرسم

    I attained the cause of my connection through his glorious deeds

    Which time obeys however he determines.

  22. قام فصرفُ الحادثاتِ قاعدٌ

    وهبِّ دوني فالخطوبُ نوَّم

    He stood up and circumstances were overturned,

    Grant me success, for hardships make me sleepy.

  23. كم وقعةٍ أقدمَ فيها مصلتا

    حيثُ السهامُ خيفةً لا تقدم

    How many times did he advance in dilemmas and birds

    Of the air crowded to villages?

  24. تبكي السيوفُ والعوالي شجوها

    ويضحك الذئبُ بها والقشعم

    You would doubt whether those birds are his horses

    Or those horses are soaring birds.

  25. موتٌ عدوٍ وحياةُ وافدٍ

    في السّلمِ شهدٌ والحروبِ علقم

    The waters rhymed and they are elite, and the curves returned

    Yearning, and they are blood and water.

  26. يرفع عافيه كما يخفضُ من

    باراهُ أو ناصبُه ويجزِم

    So the rugged is smooth, mountains are but a hop

    The difficult is easy and the far is near.

  27. إذا انبرى فى مأزقٍ وحلَّقت

    طيورُ جوٍ للقرى تزدحم

    The least of sins for him when his steed gallops,

    And the faded is renewed and empowered.

  28. شككتَ هل تلك الطيورُ خيلهُ

    أم تلكمُ الخيلُ طيورٌ هوَّم

    Bestowing like water - the loom of his deeds

    Weaves - the palm of morning grants delight and unites.

  29. خضن المياهَ وهي صرفٌ وانثنت

    مغذَّةً وهي مياهٌ ودم

    It penetrates a heart though iron falls short,

    And a glance, though the night at its darkest.

  30. فالوعر سهلٌ والجبالُ كثبٌ

    والصعبُ هينٌ والبعيدُ أمَم

    Like the night in color, crescent shaped,

    Majestic and studded with stars.

  31. أدنى الخطايا منه حين ينتدي

    جوادهُ والذابلُ المقوَّم

    O you who grant goodness, o you who aid horses and

    Whiten plains in the darkness that gleams!

  32. وسابغٌ كالماءِ حاكت نسجهُ

    كفُّ الصَّبا تُسدي ضحىّ وتلحم

    I longed, and my absence from you is enough -

    In my soul it assists and inveighs against me.

  33. ينفذُ قلباً والحديد قاصرٌ

    ومقلةً والنقعُ ليلٌ مُظلم

    A group preceded me - had I obeyed

    Passion for you they would not have advanced.

  34. لا تسألنَّ عن أعاديهِ وسلْ

    ما فعلتْ عادٌ وأين جُرهم

    They finesse speech when I am absent - though if

    I attended them one day of speech, they would be silent.

  35. ينثر هاماتهم بسيفهِ

    وللقلوب بقناهِ ينظم

    They said - and not all speech penetrates -

    True, nor are all swords sharpened.

  36. لرأيهِ وجودهِ إذا انتدى

    وبأسهِ وعدلهِ إذ يحكم

    If I spoke they were silent, if my shadow appeared

    They were frightened, and if I shone they darkened.

  37. قيسٌ سيفهٌ وبخيلٌ حاتمٌ

    وجازعٌ عمروٌ وكسرى يظلم

    And if I recalled while they were among

    An arbiter who knows.

  38. مضى بي قدماً إباءٌ وأبٌ

    وقدمٌ من العلى وقدم

    It is said of me he spoke undisputedly

    And of them they mentioned and claimed.

  39. يحتلُّ منه دستهُ وطرفهُ

    طودٌ وبحرٌ زاجرٌ وضيغم

    So my share is submission to what I have said

    And their share from speech is accusation.

  40. له الظبُّي مخالبٌ والسابغا

    تٌ لبدٌ والذابلاتُ أجم

    So sheath the tales of verse, O children

    Of claims - for not every sheath holds Zamzam.

  41. من معشرٍ تبكي أعاديهم دماً

    سيوفهم في النقع أو تبتسم

    We are the falcons wherever there is prey while you

    Are prey - we are falcons and you are carrion.

  42. يجلو دجى الليل البهيم منهم

    غرُّ الوجوه حين تخفى البهم

    Do not covet heights beyond your reach

    Other than piety and the Bedouin life, O dregs!

  43. أسدٌ إذا هموا غيوثٌ إن هموا

    بنو العلى بنوا ولما يهدموا

    If you grow angry at my words then usurp them -

    The ferocious were led by the summit.

  44. مصاقعٌ أن قوولوا فوارسٌ إن

    قوتلوا يوم وغي أو عزموا

    I have attained what minds recoil from,

    And I got what ambitions fall short of.

  45. ففي الوجوه بهجٌ وفي الأكف

    ف كرمٌ وفي الأنوف شممَ

    As if Zuhair stood declaiming

    In a ruin no ruin ever attained.

  46. فما يليق المُلك إلاّ بهمِ

    زولا يلذُّ المدحُ إلاّ لهم

    Yours are the deeds and potent speech while mine

    Is the sword and mine is the pen.

  47. إليك جاب البيدَ كلُّ ضامرٍ

    بمثلهِ عما قليلٍ يضخم

    So if you did then forbearance and dew,

    And if I spoke then prohibition and judgment.

  48. أنحلها وركبها طولُ السُّرى

    فهي قسيٌ والرجال أسهمُ

  49. نلتَ المعالي والأنامُ نوَّمٌ

    كأنهم جمعاً عن المجد عموا

  50. بذذتهم طفلاً وسُدت يافعاً

    ونصفاً وما أتاك الحُلم

  51. هبني طويلَ الباع محبوك القرا

    سامي العنان بالضَّمير يفهم

  52. عبلَ الشَّوى تزينهُ قوائمٌ

    ثابتةُ الأسِ وصدرٌ عمَم

  53. حديدَ إذنٍ وجنانٍ ويدٍ

    ما نادمَ المُوفى عليهِ ندَم

  54. شديد حسّ السمع إن حملتهُ

    يوماً على الهول ففيه صَمم

  55. نونٌ إذا خاض البحار إن سما

    إلى الشعاف الشُمِ فهو قشعم

  56. إن شَدَّ فهو اجدلٌ أو قام

    فهو جبلٌ يروق منه الشَّمم

  57. يلقى الصَّفا بمثلهِ حافرهُ

    وجلدهُ من الحرير أنعم

  58. لبانهُ من السهام جنةٌ

    وظهرهُ من الرماح حرم

  59. كالليل لوناً بهلال منعلٌ

    جلالةً وبالثريا ملجم

  60. يا مانح الخير وحلس الخيل وال

    بيض المواضي في الطلى تثلم

  61. رغبتُ وحسبي غيبتي عنك أسلى

    ينجدُ في جوانحي ويتهم

  62. تقدمتني عصبةٌ لو أنني

    أطعتُ فيك الشوق ما تقدموا

  63. ينمقون القول ما غبتُ فإن

    حضرتهم يومَ مقال وجموا

  64. قالوا وما كل المقال نافذٌ

    صدقٌ ولا كل السيوف مخدم

  65. فإن نطقتُ صمتوا وإن بدا

    ظلي خفوا وإن أضأت اظلموا

  66. وإن ذكرتُ وهمُ في محضرٍ

    أو مجلسٍ حاكمهُ من يعلم

  67. يقال عني قال لا منازعاً

    وعنهمُ قد ذكروا وزعموا

  68. فحظي التسليمُ ممَّا قلتهُ

    وحظهم من المقال التُهم

  69. فاطووا أحاديثَ القريض يا بني

    الدعوى فما كل طويِ زمزم

  70. نحن الصقورُ حيث هامٌ أنتمُ

    وهامةٌ نحن وأنتم قدّم

  71. لا ترمقوا جوّ على ليس له

    غير البزاةِ والبدوا يا رخم

  72. فان غضبتم لمقالي فاغتصبوا

    إذ الوهاجُ قد سمتها القممِ

  73. بلغتُ ما الأفكار عنهُ نكصٌ

    ونلتُ ما تعجزُ عنهُ الهِممِ

  74. كأنما قام زهيرٌ منشداً

    في هرمٍ ما لم ينله الهرم

  75. لكَ الفعال والمقالُ الجزل لي

    وعبدك السيفُ وعبدي القلم

  76. فان فعلت فالسماحُ والنَّدى

    وان نطقتُ فالنُّهى والحكم
