روحها الحادي وقد لاح العلم
ونجمتْ ذو سلم ذات السلم
Her spirit was my guide when the banner appeared,
And the star with a ladder, the ladder-marked one, shone.
دعها وما قولي دعها منّةً
كم وحدت شوقاً إلى تلك الأكم
Let her be - though to say "Let her be" is no favor -
How often has she awakened longing for those hills!
وكم رماها الليلُ بابن همَّةٍ
كظبةِ السيفِ إذا همَّ عزم
How often has the night assaulted her with a energetic man,
Like the blade of a sword when it intends resolve!
خاضَ بها لجَّ الظلام آمناً
إنَّ الصباحَ دونهُ خوضُ الظلَّم
He penetrated the darkness of the pitch black night, trusting
That the dawn was before him, not the darkness of blindness.
كأنما ساقط حتى سقطها
ورداً بأخفاف المطيِّ بل نظم
It was as if, until it fell down with her,
He was a wilting rose brought by the brisk steed, or verse.
أهذهِ أم تلك دار زينبٍ
لولا ذهولي دونها ما قلتُ أم
Is this or that Zaynab's house?
Had I not been distraught, I would not have asked, "Or?"
فيا ولاة الحيّ هل دين الهوى
يجور فيه حاكمٌ متى حكم
O rulers of the living! Does the religion of passion
Allow an unjust ruler when he decrees?
في ذَّمةِ الحبِّ فؤادُ عاشقٍ
تيَّمهُ أن كان للحبِّ ذمم
In the pledge of love is the heart of a lover -
If love has pledges - orphaned.
ويح دموعي ما لها بعدهم
تلوَّنت مثلهم فالدمعُ دم
Woe to my tears! After them, what?
They have taken on their colors. So tears are blood.
قومٌ إذا قامت بهم سوق وغى
واحتدَّ نابُ النائبات واحتدم
A people, when the market of unrest set up
And the tusk of calamities sharpened and raged,
شاموا بروق الموهنات إنَّها
معوَّداتٌ أن تلمَّ بالّلمم
They withstood the lightning of humiliation. Verily it
Is accustomed to gather up vile souls.
زهر الحجى مر القنا سود الوغى
خضر الحمى بيضُ الدُّمى حمر النَّعم
The blossoms of the cheeks became bitter, the red of shame
Green of envy, the white of tears red of blessings.
من كلّ ظبيٍ دونهُ ليثُ شرى
ليس له غيرُ قنا الحظِّ أجم
From each gazelle beneath it a predatory lion
Who has no fortune but the bow of misfortune fully drawn.
غيرانُ لا تروعهُ حادثهُ
يعروه عن قرع سوى الصم صمم
Passionate, not deterred by events,
That would uncover him except the deafening crash.
وبأبي ذو صلفٍ حمامُ من
هامَ به في ذلك الطرف الأحمّ
Without him, no banner of opinion would be raised
Nay, nor would a flag of knowledge flutter.
هبِ التثني ما ثنى أحكامهُ
عن شططٍ فظلمهُ كيف ظلم
His deeds are of decisive deception, and his name
Is like the sword - it does not face refusal head-on.
أحوى حوى رقي ألوى كم لوى
دين عذابي فيه عذبُ المبتسم
His determination is hardened in disasters when
The ignoble becomes Arabized. And ignorant.
بدرٌ إذا ألقى اللثام سافراً
وهوَ هلالُ ليلةٍ إذا التثم
Possessor of a whim which intoxication shuns
And which engulfs him utterly like pain.
يزعمُ أن سلوتهُ متَّهماً
ما كلُّ صبِّ بالسلو يتَّهم
If the removal of a speck in his sleep were forbidden him,
He would bar sleep from his eyes and not sleep.
ألم يعد طيفُ الخيال حاكياً
عن لوعتي وحبَّذا طيفٌ ألم
He quaffs the pearls of wisdom about fate
And how far is the pearl of wisdom from fate!
قلتُ بأنَّ البدرَ يحكيه إذن
ويا له من قسمٍ أيِ قسم
Possessor of a fresh sweet stream, speaker of elegant prose
Angry when he judges, fulfilling the judgment.
أو قلتٌ أن كنتُ أطعتُ سلوةً
إنّ لمحيي الدين مثلاً في الأمم
O how many tribulations from him are a tribulation for the enemy,
And how many favors that come to him are favors!
من وجهةُ وحلمهُ وكفهُ
شمسُ ضحى طودُ نهى بحر كرم
His generosity universally enriched the people
More than their fathers, uncles, and paternal uncles.
ذو سطوةٍ عاديةٍ عادَّيةٍ
لو قابلت صرف الزمان لأنهزم
O you who mutinied, your uprising mutinied against
The noble souls. And the pillars.
فسيّدُ العوم حسامُ رأيهِ العض
بُ لأدواء البلاد قد حسم
Do not count aberration as guidance, and
Disregard his hearing - the misguided is not like the guide.
فالسيفُ للسيف
لا بل كفاهُ في الأقاليم القلم
He purified it from disgrace. Verily
The high-minded disdain what is low.
أرقمُ رملٍ أن رجاه أرملٌ
أغناهُ ما حبَّر جوداً أو رقّم
Defending the kingdom, he stood in its place???
He seeks protection with management when
لخوفهِ تعرو السيوفَ رعدةٌ
والسَّمهريَّاتِ نحولٌ وسقم
Weakness takes refuge with him - sufficing, protecting.
How many dawns of joy his light brought out
لولاه لم تنشر لرأيٍ رايةٌ
كلاَّ ولم تخفق لذي علمِ علم
While we were in darkness that darkened and deepened!
Hearing the ringing of those seeking justice, hastening
من فعلهُ ماضي الغرار واسمهُ
كالسيف ما استقبل في الحال حزم
To them, deaf to the killer of virtue.
The unique one provides for us eternally -
من عودهُ صلبٌ على الخطب إذا
لأن لعجمِ الخطبُ عربٌ وعجم
From him come the unique ones, and the twins.
His mother is not barren, so how can
ذو حبوةٍ يطيش رضوى دونها
ويعتري يلملماً مثلُ الألم
The endeavor of one who aims fail?
Alive, he gives life, ransoming it even,
لو كان في منامهِ منعُ قذى
لصدَّ عن منامه فلم ينم
And for evildoers, vengeance when he is vengeful.
In him is life for the truth and wealth
يرشف درَّ الحلمِ عن مقدرةٍ
وأين درُّ الحلم من درّ الحلم
While in him for falseness is misery and non-existence.
Your reputation permitted the reputation of property, so
ذو موردٍ عذبٍ وربُّ منطقٍ
عضب إذا يحكم وافى بالحكم
The pilferer of his property was not blamed.
Diffusing its scent is the relative with the relative,
يا كم بلاء للعدى منهُ بلا
جمٍ وكم من نعمةٍ تولي نعم
The breeze of praise from that soft blow.
Near to the spring of dew, he enriches people
عمَّ الورى جوداً كما فاقهم
أبا أبياً وزكا خالاً وعم
With his roses, beyond need or blame.
The dew of the hand of Ibn Shahriyar revives
يا باغياً شأو علاه باغيا
أين النفوسُ الزاكياتُ والثيم
Shyness from it - it did not withdraw in disdain.
He prospered the days of days and doubled
ليس الضّلال كالهدى فعدّ عن
مسعاته ولا الوهادُ كالقمم
The livelihood of orphans, capacious after destitution.
He sought glory, attaining in his youth
طهَّرها من دنسٍ وإنَّما
يأنف للشماء ذو الأنف الأشم
What eluded the bent old man complaining of old age.
When the occurrence of events was feared, he
حامى عن الملك وقامَ دونه
......
Yearned for them, while the bald had no hair.
Because he was harmonious, he shunned
يستنزلُ العصم بتدبيرٍ متى
لاذ بهِ الوهنُ كفاه وعصم
The blaze that flared up from it.
The people of guidance came together devoted to him,
كم من صباح غبطةٍ أطلعهُ
وهناً وقد أظلم وهنٌ فأدلهم
While his people - how they refused and did not come together!
You blamed the days, "Who but the son of whom and whom
سميع جرس الطالبين مسرعٌ
إليهم عن قاتل الفحش أصمّ
Have you sheltered? How many events you sheltered!"
Eyes lower before him not from blindness,
فردُ المعالي أبداً تطيعنا
منه المعالي من فرادٍ وتوم
And tongues are silent from awe, not muteness.
Brief streams, his palm has stemmed the dew,
ما أمهُ عافٍ فعاد خائباً
كيف يخيبُ سعيُ من يمَّم يم
As long as care for the religion is his concern.
O sanctuary of the kingdom whose attainment
فهو حياً يعطي الحياةَ وفده
وللعفاةِ نقمٌ إذا نقم
Enriched all the people of the world - no stream barred.
O illuminator of the world with justice and law!
من فيه للحقِّ حياةٌ وغنى
وفيه للباطل بؤسٌ وعدم
You unveiled us from darkness completely and injustice.
Verily rhymes that roam are a harem
ممدَّحُ العرض أباح عرض ال
مالِ بغاةَ مالهِ فلم يذمّ
Protected, possessing rights and sanctity.
The horizons are folded not from abasement -
شذا النَّسيبِ بالنَّسيب عبقٌ
ندى نسيمِ المدح من تلك النَّسم
The blowing of the musk-scented wind blew, so we smelled.
They are doves! In fact, a society of doves
قريبُ ينبوع النَّدى يغنى الورى
في ورده عن شطنٍ وعن وذم
Whose blackness my outstanding merit made.
So be delighted with them, enriched through
ندى يد ابن الشَّهر زوريِّ حياً
يغضي الحيا منهُ حياءً ما سجم
The overflowing favor of a wise spreading in you, then flowing.
Radiant like the sun, beautiful, and
أخصب أيام الأيامي وثنى
عيش اليتامى واسعاً بعد اليتم
Rising like the dawn, while poetry is darkness.
I come without dependence, aid, conformity,
سعى إلى المجد فنال يافعاً
ما عاجَ عنه هرمٌ يشكو الهرم
Or bending, resolved and determined.
Innovative, having no antiquity,
قرمٌ إذا خفتَ سطا حادثةٍ
كان له شوقٌ إليها وقرم
But in the utmost virtue having precedence.
She created puzzling versification spontaneously even if
مطّربُ فإن
فاء بعفوٍ باخَ منها ما اضطرم
She were to recite it, shyness would silence her and she would veil herself.
So say to one who attempts to emulate her,
أضحى به شعبُ الهدى ملتئماً
وشعبهُ وكم أبى وما التأم
"It suffices you that pus resembles cream!"
This, O Abu Hamid, is the praise that
أعتبتِ الأيَّامُ بابن من ومن
فكم أمنَّا حادثا وكم وكم
Won allegiance when its star rose.
We are not like those whose love, if you are absent, is absent,
تغضي العيونُ دونه لا من عمى
وتصمتُ الألسنُ خوفاً لا بكم
And who frown on fine speech and conceal it.
Because you, O Muhammad, are praiseworthy,
نهنه غواديك لقد كفَّ ندى
كفّك ما دام له همُّ الدِّيم
And we are like fathers in service.
You left it to us, as we left praise of you, when
يا حرمَ الملكِ الذي نواله
عمَّ بني الدنيا فما قيل حرم
You grasped glory, to the servants and the servile.
All the children of hopes are for property and for
يا نيّرَ العالم عدلاً وسناً
كشفتَ عنَّا الظلَّم جمعاً والظُّلم
Outcome - sons of servants and servants.
Verily Damascus in its hope is truthful
إنَّ القوافي الشاردات حرمٌ
مصونةٌ ذاتُ حقوقٍ وحرم
Since its horizons shone after the darkness.
You brought, so if it said "It filled up," it is the sea,
تطبّق الآفاق لا عن بذلة
هبوب ريح المسك هبَّ فنسم
And the rise of the full moon, if it said "It is complete."
You were the guardian, and your name is the praised one -
هنَّ الحمام بل حمام معشرٍ
أصارهم فضلي سوداً كالحمم
Necks of aspiration were marked before and marked.
The knot of the lands - if you assumed its stringing -
فأسعد بهنَّ فقراً مفعمة ال
فضل ذكيُّ نشرها فيك فغم
Would be completed by it, and compose a knot of joy.
O quintessence of horizons! After you absence
شامسةً كالشَّمس حسناً وعلى
طالعة كالصُّبح والشّعر ظلم
Remained, while for the enemies remained non-existence.
نأت عن الإقواء والسّناد والإ
كفاء والإيطاءِ عزماً وهمم
محدثةً ليس لها من قدمٍ
لكن بها في غاية الفضل قدم
وافتكَ مهيارية الوزن ولو
يسمعها أغضى حياءً واحتشم
فقل لمن حاولها موازناً
حسبك أني يشبه الشّحم الورم
هذا أبا حامدٍ المدحُ الذي
حاز الولاء إرثه لمَّا نجم
لسنا كمن أن غبتَ غاب ودُّه
وجمجمَ القولَ الجميل وكتم
لأنت يا محَّمدٌ محّمدٌ
ونحن كالآباء في سلك الخدم
خلفته كما خلفناهم على
مدحك أن أمسك شانٍ ووجم
كلُّ بني الآمالِ للمال ولل
مآل أبناءُ العبيد والخدم
أنَّ دمشقَ صادقٌ رجاؤها
مذ أشرقت أرجاؤها بعد العتم
قدمتَ فالبحرُ إذا قيل طما
وطلعةُ البدر إذا ما قيل تم
كنتَ الوليِّ واسمك الو
سميُّ أعناق المنى قبلُ وسم
عقدُ البلادِ لو وليتَ نظمهُ
تمَّ بها عقدُ السُّرور وانتظم
يا فاقةَ الآفاقِ عدماً بعدكم
بقيتمُ وللمعادينَ العدمَ
