ولَّما حجبنا عنك سرَّاً وجهرة

وقابلنا البوَّابُ بالمنظر الجهمِ

When we concealed from you secretly and openly,

And the doorkeeper met us with a stern face,

وعزَّ مع البعد اللقاء فبيننا

تنائف تخشاها الخيالات في الحلمِ

And meeting became difficult with distance between us,

Fears crept in dreams of thoughts wandering far apart,

بعثنا بوفد الحمد والعامُ مجدبٌ

إلى النائلِ الفضفاضِ والكرمِ الجمّ

We sent a delegation with praise and thanks abounding,

To the generous host of hospitality beaming,

ولم نر لوماً في الحجابِ حقيقة

وهل لائمٌ في النعيمِ للقمرِ التمّ

And found no fault in the veil of barriers truly,

Can one fault the blissful moon for being out of reach?

ولا أنا في بعد المكان بعاتبِ

ومن ذا الذي يبغي الوصول إلى النجم

Neither do I blame the vast space dividing us,

For who can aspire to grasp a distant star?
