    فان خالفتني فسل القلوبا

    And your company is the best part of my worries

    If you oppose me, then ask the hearts

  3. دعوت له التصبر مستغيثاً

    ولكن ما دعوت له مجيبا

    I prayed for patience for it desperately

    But I did not pray for it to be answered

  4. فان أصبحت عن طرفي بعيداً

    لقد أصبحت من قلبي قرينا

    So if you're far from me in the morning

    You've become the closest to my heart

  5. فيا بشرى دمشق وساكنيها

    وصلت بوصلها صبا كئيبا

    Good tidings Damascus and its inhabitants

    With its connection, spring brought rain cloudily

  6. وما ابتسمت ثغور الأرض حتى

    قد مت فشقت السحب الجيوبا

    The lips of earth did not smile until

    I died, so I tore the clouds open

  7. فأنت الغيث وهي الروض تحيا

    به وكلاكما أضحى حبيا

    You're the rain and it's the meadow brought to life

    By it, and you both have become beloved

  8. تبلج وجها طلقا وكانت

    متى سفرت رأيت به قطوبا

    It makes her face shine purely though she was

    Gloomy whenever you traveled and saw the highlands

  9. وما ابيضت بها الأيام لكن

    ثنتها خيفة الأعداء شيبا

    The days did not whiten with it, but

    Gray hair bent them out of fear of enemies

  10. طلعت علي نجم هدًى فأهون

    بنجم الأفق بعدك أن يغيبا

    A guiding star rose upon me, so the

    Stars of the horizon became trivial after you

  11. لقد أفحمتني عن وصف نعمى

    لسان الحال قام بها خطيبا

    You've made me speechless in describing my blessing

    The state's tongue handled it as an orator

  12. وأخصب جودك الفياض ربعي

    وكان كما علمت به جديبا

    And your generous pouring made my homestead fertile

    And it was, as you knew, barren

  13. فلست بعادمٍ ماءً نميراً

    ولست بفاقدٍ مرعى خصيبا

    I'm not devoid of abundant sweet water

    Nor devoid of fertile pasture

  14. هززتك فارعوى الأعداء لما

    هززت عليهم سيفاً قضوبا

    You shook them so the enemies fled when

    You shook a straight sword at them

  15. وفاق الشعر فيك وقائلوه

    فلم يك رأيه رأيا جليبا

    And those who wrote poetry of you surpassed poetry

    So their views were not wholesome ones

  16. إذا ما أنجبت غيد القوافي

    فلا تخطب لها إلا نجيبا

    If you give birth to poetry's pearls

    Do not ask for them except the virtuous

  17. يهو عندي الحدثان صبري

    فما أخشى النوائب أن تنوبا

    Youth makes my patience priceless

    So I do not fear misfortunes will bring harm

  18. وما أشكو سوى حسنات دهري

    فلو حاققته كانت ذنوبا

    And I do not complain except about my good fortunes

    For if I looked into it, they would be sins

  19. وكلٌ بات ذا وطنٍ وأهل

    وليس به سوى فضلي غريبا

    Everyone spent the night with a homeland and family

    While through my grace alone he remains a stranger

  20. ومن يك عالماً بالخلق علمي

    فليس بواجدٍ شيئاً عجيبا

    And whoever knows people as I do

    Will not find anything wondrous

  21. فدم تعطي الأماني كل عافٍ

    كما تزع الحوادث والخطوبا

    Do not let wishes give false security

    As disasters and calamities come and go

  22. إذا الدنيا شكت داءً دفيناً

    مننت فكنت للدنيا طبيبا

    If the world complained of a chronic illness

    You favoured me, so you were the world's doctor
