عذر الصبابة في عذارك واضح

ومن الصبابة خيبة العذال

The excuse of youthfulness is evident in your coquetry,

And the disappointment of youth comes from coquetry.

حتف المتيم منك يوم قطيعة

وحياته في الحب يوم وصال

The agony of the lovesick one from you on the day of estrangement,

And his life in love on the day of union.

عاقبت طرفي بالسهاد وما جنى

والقلب بالأشواق والبلبال

You punished my eyes with wakefulness, though they gained nothing,

While the heart remains in anxieties and turmoil.

ورحلت لا تحنو على متلهف

باكٍ يطل الدمع في الأطلال

You journeyed without longing for the ardent one,

Weeping, whose tears pour over the ruins.

قس طاعة الوجد المبرح والأسى

ما حال يوم نواكم من حالي

The obedience of passionate love became difficult and sorrowful.

What is my state on the day of your departure compared to before?

عين مؤرقة ودمع ساكب

وصبابة تذكو وجسم بال

A restless eye and pouring tears,

And youthfulness that is reminded, and a body in turmoil.

قد كدت أغرق في بحار مدامعي

لولا التمسك فيك بالآمال

I almost drowned in the oceans of my tears,

If not for clinging to hope in you.

أبداً أميل إليك ميل تذلل

وتصد صد تدلل وملال

I always incline to you with a humbling inclination,

And you confront with a pampering confrontation and boredom.

ويزيدني ظمأ رضابك واللمى

إني ظمئت من الجوى بزلال

Your rejection increases my thirst, and touching you

Quenches my thirst with fresh water.

ما أنس لا أنس الوداع وأعـ

ـين الآجال حائزة على الآجال

I cannot forget - I do not forget the farewell, though

My eyes possess the appointments and terms.

وبليتني من تلكم الأضغان جفـ

ـن مهند سموه جفن غزال

I have been afflicted by those sorrows - a wing,

Which they named the wing of a gazelle.

أسفي على تلك القباب وقد حوت

هيف القدود رواجح غزال

I grieve over those domes which contained

The remains of the beloved, tilting like a gazelle.

من كل حالية تضم إلى المهى

أحشاء محراب على تمثال

From every condition that attracts me to passion,

The insides of a prayer niche upon a statue.

لو كنت حيث جلا الحمى نواره

لعرفت منه مساحب الأذيال

If only I were where the zeal spread its light,

I would recognize its trailing robes.

تبدو نجوم قنا الفريق أمامها

في ليل عثيره ليله هلال هلال

The stars of Sirius appear before it

In a dark, moonless night.

طرف يميل مع النسيم قوامه

ويلي من المتون الميال

A glance that inclines with the breeze, straight in stance,

And smooth in gait like a young branch.

عذبت مراشفه وصدت بقده

فحمى جنى المعسول بالعسال

I have enjoyed its pillows and resisted its wine,

So the heat of ripe wine buzzed with honey.

شغفت بطلعته القلوب لوجدها

شغف السقيم بطلعة الإبلال

Hearts were fervently in love with its rising,

Like the longing of a sick one for the rise of recovery.

عهدي وظل الوصل غير مقلص

عنا وعمر المطل غير مطال

My pact and the shadow of connection remain unbroken,

While the term of longing remains unending.

وكأنما لبس الزمان سنا صفي الـ

ـدين ذي الأنعام والأفضال

As if time has worn the teeth of the flawless religion,

Of bounties and graces.

هو واهب الخيرات والقود العرا

مس في اللهى والسابح الذيال

It is the granter of goodness and leader of the honored,

In passions and swimming trails.

فعلاؤه متقابل وإباؤه

مستأصر ونواله متوال

Its family reciprocates while its father

Seeks victory and its attainment is successive.

خضر الجناب فإن دجت في لزبة

سود الخطوب فأبيض الأفعال

Green of association, though sometimes sullen in seclusion,

Yet white of deeds.

سل عنه في بذل المكارم والقرى

واسمع من الغدوات والآصال

Ask about it in generosity and valiance,

And listen in the dawns and evenings.

منح ابتداء رافعاً خبر الندى

وكفى الوجوه مؤونة التسآل

It gifted initially, raising the news of dew,

And sufficed the faces the burden of begging.

كثرت صنائعه فقل نظيره

إن البدور قليلة الأمثال

Its works multiplied, so rarely did any equal it,

As instances are few to match virtues.

وحوت أزمة جلق أعماله

وكذا الجنان تحاز بالأعمال

And the crisis of its actions contained

That which even Heavens covet for deeds.

ذو همة كالنجم تحت عزيمة

كالسيف إن حادثته بصقال

With zeal like a star beneath determination

Like a sword - if polished, what strikes it sparks.

حاط العلى ورماحه أقلامه

حيث المداد رؤوس نصال

It has encompassed the highs, and its spears are its pens,

Where ink is the heads of thin swords.

كالمسك في لمم اليراع فإن يكن

غضب فنار في رؤوس ذبال

Like musk in the touching of hands, so if it be

Anger, then fire in the heads of matchsticks.

في ليل ذاك النقس تطرقنا المنى

فكأنها في الهدى طيف خيال

In the night of that star we attained wishes,

As if it were an illusion of guidance in the darkness.

يحكي بياض الطرس تحت سواده

أسرار صبح في صدور ليال

The whiteness of the Pleiades under its darkness

Recounts the secrets of dawn in the nights' bosoms.

سكنت به الدهماء حتى أنها

بسطاه قد أمنت الزلزال

With it resided sorrows until they

Felt safe from tremors in its expanse.

تسبي ثناء الخلق خيل سماحه

وتطاعن الآمال بالأموال

Its generosity's praise is proclaimed by people,

And hopes compete through wealth.

حتى إذا اشتبكت بساحته الوغى

نادت مرابعه الوفود نزال

Until when troubles tangled in its field,

Its squares called out for war.

بالصاحب الميمون أصحب مطلبي

ووفت لي الآمال بعد مطال

Accompany my purpose, oh fortunate companion!

And fulfil my hopes after long wait.

ووصلت به قطيعة وعززت بعـ

ـد إضاعة وهديت بعد ضلال

Unite my estrangement and strengthen

My loss after ruin, and guide my misguidance.

وغدوت أهزأ بالزمان وصرفه

من كل نائبة خلي البال

I ridiculed fate and its ups and downs,

Emptying my mind of every worry.

هو نير العلياء وهو سماؤه

داني سنا فينا بعيد منال

It is the guide of the eminent, and it is their support,

Bringing us close though still distant.

قلبت وجه الظن في صفحاتها

حتى ظفرت بقبلة الإقبال

It turned the face of doubt in its pages

Until I gained a kiss of approval.

بالباخلين عرفت قدر سماحه

وبيان قدر الغيث بالأمحال

Through the stingy I knew the value of its generosity,

And the value of rain is known through drought.

من قومه أهل السماح وآله

والناس في الأزمات لامع آل

It belongs to a people of generosity and family,

While people in times of crisis, shining family.

يتدفقون إذا الجذوب تلاحقت

كالسيل زل عن اليفاع العالي

They flow when hardships follow each other

Like torrents pouring from a high valley.

ومتى تخاذلت الأكف عن الندى

نصروا بني الدنيا على الإقلال

And when palms hold back from generosity,

They support humanity against decrease.

إيضاح مشكلة حماة مخوفة

أجواد مسبغة سهام نصال

Clarifying the problem of dreadful guardians,

Generous, dyeing arrows with sword blades.

حلي الليالي العاطلات وغيرهم

حاشاهم عطل الزمان الحالي

Adorning useless nights, unlike others,

Far from disabling the present time.

بيض تألق في الدسوت وجوههم

وكذا البدور منيرة في الهال

The brightness of their faces smiles in assemblies,

As do full moons in halos.

ضحكت ثغور عفاتهم لما بكت

عند الهبات دماً عيون المال

Their chaste smiles laughed when

Eyes wept blood at the onset of plunder.

أمعجل الآمال في إحسانه

ومخجل اللؤماء والبخال

Hope is hastened in its benevolence,

And the base and stingy are embarrassed.

قدر النضار على بنانك هين

أبداً وسعر الشعر عندك غال

The value of your freshness is always trivial,

And the price of poetry to you is high.

إن القوافي كالمطايا أنت را

كبها وهذا الجود خير عقال

Rhymes are like steeds - you ride them,

And this generosity is the best reason.

ما هن آلا الغانيات بظلكم

فالحسن باد والمهور غوال

Those singing girls are not reduced under your shade,

Beauty perished while singers roared.

لطفت شمائلها ورق نسيمها

كالماء صافحه نسيمُ شمال

Its features softened and gentle breeze,

Like touching smooth water, a north wind.

نشرت عن الخطاب غير نداكم

والبحر يلفتها عن الأوشال

It spread unlike others’ talks,

As the sea distracted it from shells.

همتم غداة سلا الأنام بحبها

أين المحب من الملول السالي

You worried at dawn about attaining its love,

Where is the lover of the languid questioner?

حسنت على الأعراض فهي سوابغ

وعلى الملابس فهي عقد لآلي

You were good to honors so they are perfected,

And to clothes so they are threaded pearls.

فليهم عيد النحر أنك باذل

ما شاء من عيني دم ونوال

So for it be a feast of sacrifice, as you give

Whatever you wish of my blood and union.

ألبسته لأيام الزمان فإنما

يسمو برؤيتك الزمان الحالي

You adorned it for the days of time, as though

The present time is exalted by seeing you.

فحسام عزمك حاسم داء العلى

ومضاء رأيك قاتل الأقيال

So the blade of your resolve defeats the illness of heights,

And the light of your view kills sorrows.
