1. سلّم سلمتَ على الأطلال والدّمنِ

    وقف على الحزن لا روعتَ بالحزنِ

    You bid farewell to the ruins and the sands,

    And paused at grief, though grief did not dismay you,

  2. كم بين تلك المغاني من قتيل هوّى

    مثلي وصبٍّ شجٍ بالبين متمحن

    How many slain lovers lie between those songs -

    Like me, pouring tears, wounded by separation.

  3. يحلُّ سرًّ الغواني من جوانحهِ

    جزلُ الأمانة لكن ناحلُ البدنِ

    The melodies reveal the secrets of their bosoms,

    Though faithful, their bodies are worn and frail.

  4. حال الشبابُ وما حالت صبابتهُ

    وخانهُ دهرهُ فيهم ولم يخن

    The vigor of youth - what has become of it?

    Time betrayed them, but they did not betray.

  5. لو كنتُ أبقيت دمعاً قبل بينهمِ

    لما تحمَّلت فيها منَّة المرن

    Had I but shed a tear before they left,

    I'd not have borne the debt of obligation.

  6. غابوا وما فكري فيهم بغائبةٍ

    فاللحظ للقلب لا للعين والأذن

    They went away, yet still my thoughts do not forget,

    For the heart, not the eye or ear, keeps vigil.

  7. وربما ليلةٍ كانت بقربهمِ

    خالاً لهوت بها في وجنةِ الزمن

    And perhaps one night, though far, they were near,

    Wandering in the gardens of days gone by.

  8. وما سلوتُ كما ظنّت وشاتهم

    لكنَّ قلبي حليفُ الوجدِ والشجن

    I did not ask after them, though they thought I would -

    But my heart is the confidant of passion and yearning.

  9. وأنكر الركبُ مني يومَ كاظمةٍ

    عيَّ اللسانِ وفوزَ الدمع باللسن

    The caravan denied me on the day we parted -

    My tongue fell silent, and tears spoke eloquently.

  10. وسنّةُ الحبّ في الآثار ماضيةٌ

    وإنما الناس بالعادات والسنن

    The ways of love and its traces remain the same,

    While people follow customs and traditions.

  11. يا دميةَ الحي كم بالحيّ من وثنٍ

    ما حظُّ عاشقهِ منهُ سوى الفتن

    My lively idol, how many false deities

    Has love, whose portion is but trials?

  12. يشكو الضَّلال بعينيهِ ويتبعهُ

    رماحُ قومكِ من قيسٍ ومن يمن

    The lost complain with their eyes, yet follow them -

    Like spears from Qais and from Yemen.

  13. حمى قوامك يوم البين مشبههُ

    رماحُ قومكِ من قيسٍ ومن يمن

    The fever of your form resembles, when we're apart,

    Their spears from Qais and from Yemen.

  14. أنظر إلى عالمي حسنى دلالتهُ

    ما سار من قمرٍ تمٍّ على غصن

    Look how the adornments of my world reveal

    A full moon rising on a branch.

  15. غداة كما خلّفوا جسماً وليس بهِ

    قلبٌ وكم غادروا عيناً بلا وسن

    When morning came, they left a body with no heart,

    Eyes with no kohl, how many they deserted!

  16. يا حادييها أريحا فالنوى قذفٌ

    والعيسُ جائلةُ الأنساع والوضن

    Guide them gently, for intentions are a calamity,

    The stumble of the feet and the slip of the hand.

  17. علَّلتماني ببانات الحمى زمناً

    هذا الحمى فدعاني وأطلقا رسني

    You blamed me with the fever's excuses for a time -

    This fever sent for me and released my fetters.

  18. أرى ظباءَ كثييها فتذكرني

    ما راح من جيدٍ عنها ومن عين

    I see the plump gazelles, and I remember

    The past, neither gone from them nor from the eye.

  19. سقى السحابُ مغانيها ومرَّ بها

    وفدُ النسيم بليل الذيل واردن

    The clouds watered their meadows and passed by,

    The breeze of night came to them with fluttering hems.

  20. وأنتَ يا أيها الشاكي صبابتهُ

    وذو الهوى من بغى الشكوى فلم يبن

    And you, oh complainer of youth,

    The passionate find no use in complaining.

  21. الك القبابُ على الجرعاء منهُ فعج

    معي وهب أنَّها دارٌ بلا سكن

    The tents on the meadow suffice me, though not lived in,

    Bear with me, they are home to none.

  22. من يخطب البيضَ بالسُّمر الدقاق ينل

    وصالها الحلوَ من أغصانها اللُّدن

    He who woos the white eggs will attain

    The sweet union of their branches.

  23. ومن تكن غادةُ العلياءِ خطبتهُ

    الحسنى فمثلَ صفيّ الدين فليكن

    He whose suit is for the lofty, beautiful gazelles,

    Let him be like the sincere Safwan.

  24. ذا النائل الطلّق والأيَّامُ عابسةٌ

    والمخبرِ العفِّ تحت المنظر الحسن

    The frank attainer though times be grim,

    And the noble informant though the scene be fair.

  25. أبهى وأهج من امن وطلعتهُ

    أشهى إلى الساهر العاني من الوسن

    More radiant and more passionate than the shelter,

    Is his appearance to the sleepless lover.

  26. بالصاحب اليقظ الندب الوزير سمت

    على الوهاد مساعينا إلى القنن

    The knowledgeable friend guided our efforts

    Through the wadis to the fortresses.

  27. فالمرتع الوحفُ أحوى غير ذي وباء

    والمورد العذب غير الآجن الأسن

    The open meadow holds none but the healthy,

    The sweet springs none but the pure.

  28. الألمعيّ الذي تذكو فراستهُ

    حتى يكادَ ينال الغيبَ بالظّنن

    The brilliant one whose insight is remembered

    As if he could grasp the unseen through guesswork.

  29. لا يضمرُ الغدرَ ديناً سائغاً وتقى

    فسرُّهُ في الر كالعلن

    He conceals no treachery in upright faith,

    His secrets in well-being like the visible.

  30. يثني الخطوب فلا ندري أشام بها

    برقاً من اليمن أو سيفاً من اليمن

    I don't know if the obstacles he resolves

    Are lightning from Yemen or a sword from Yemen.

  31. أسلى العفاة عن الأوطان نائلهُ

    فكلُّ ناءٍ من الإحسان في وطن

    He distracted the ascetics from their homelands,

    For every blessing comes from his kindness.

  32. في شدَّة الدهر لين العطف شاملهُ

    وعند ضيق الليالي واسعُ العطن

    In the hardships of fate, he is gentle of spirit,

    In narrow nights, generous.

  33. أجدى فأجرى بحاراً من مواهبهِ

    وخيلهُ عوضٌ فيها من السفن

    He brought forth a sea of gifts,

    His horses compensation for ships.

  34. لو لم تغر نداهُ السُّحب ما رعدت

    ولا تلوَّن وجهُ العارضِ الهتن

    If his voice did not stir the clouds, they would not thunder,

    Nor would the cheek of lightning flash.

  35. يا صاحِ هذا الذي كنَّا نؤمّلهُ

    فاحلل عن القول فيهِ عقدةَ اللكن

    O you who are this that we hoped for,

    Unfasten the knot of silence about him!

  36. حاط البلادَ فما تخشى أعاديها

    وكيف يخشى نسيماً جانباً حضن

    He protected the lands, so you need not fear for them,

    How could a tender shoot fear the embrace?

  37. راشت سهاماً وليست كالسهام فقد

    أضفى بها جننا ليست من الجنن

    He shot arrows, but they are not like arrows -

    He added his loving care, not mere shooting.

  38. ردت على الملك من ماضي الشبيبة ما

    ولَّى فألقى قناعَ الشيب والوهن

    He restored to the king the past days of youth,

    So he cast off the mask of old age and weakness.

  39. وماردٍ رقصت أحشاؤهُ جذلاً

    وخيفةً لسماع الحرب والهدن

    He made the guts of the stubborn dance

    In fear and dread on hearing "war" and "truce".

  40. للسلم فيهِ حديثٌ كلُّهُ سمرٌ

    سرى فسرَّ قلوب الخلق والمدن

    In it is talk of peace, all of it delightful,

    Bringing joy to hearts and cities.

  41. أرى الخلائق من قبل الردى فرقاً

    فالحيُّ في الزغف مثل الميت في الكفن

    I see people as if cloven by fate -

    The living in agony like the dead in shrouds.

  42. قل ما تشاء وخيرُ القول أصدقهُ

    في صفحةِ اللَّين أو في حدّهِ الخشن

    Say what you will, the best speech is the most truthful,

    Whether in the page of gentleness or its harsh edge.

  43. أشتاتَ القلوب إلى

    يأسٍ يفرّق بين الروح والدنَ

    Hearts scattered in despair that severs

    Spirit from body.

  44. ساس الزمان بلا طيشٍ ولا قلقٍ

    واقتاد تدبيرهُ الدنيا بلا رسن

    He steered the times without frivolity or alarm

    And led its course without bridle or bit.

  45. وطال ما شان أقوامٌ

    المنّ شينَ القول باللحن

    Many whom you called "friend" falsely

    Spoke in ugly tones.

  46. فضلتَ من كان يدعى صاحباً كرماً

    ما كلُّ سيفٍ سيف ابن ذي يزن

    You preferred one who was called "the generous friend"-

    Not every sword is the sword of Yazan's son.

  47. أنتم معشرٌ كفَّت أناملهم

    في اليوم والأمسِ كفّ الظلمِ والغبن

    You are a folk whose fingers stayed

    Yesterday and today the injustice and cheating.

  48. وليتمُ الملك شبَّاناً وفي كبرٍ

    مع المشيب وسنّ الحلمِ واللَّبن

    May he enjoy his kingship as a youth, and in maturity

    The gray hair, wisdom and experience.

  49. ما غير آرائكم يرجى لحائنةٍ

    تخشى ولا غير أيديكم بمؤتمن

    None but your views are hoped for in dire times,

    None but your hands are trusted.

  50. عيونُ فكرك لا اغفين كم طرقت

    مكامن الغلِّ من أحشاء مضطغن

    The eyes of your thoughts do not sleep -

    How many times have they probed

  51. يزور بالبؤس والنعماء أهلها

    كالدَّهر حالاهُ مقرونان في قرن

    The minds of the suspect!

    Fortune and blessings visit its people

  52. يبغي مداك ولو أطلقت ناظرهُ

    فيهِ لعثَّرتهُ في ذلك السَّنن

    Like time, with blessings and woes yoked together.

    It seeks your support, and if you set your eyes upon it,

  53. شأوٌ بلغت أقاصيهِ بلا تعبٍ

    وطالما ردَّ غرب الجامحِ الأرن

    You would surely stumble upon its beauties.

    You attained the farthest reaches effortlessly,

  54. سامَ الثناءَ وحلاَّهُ وفاز بهِ

    منزّه الخلق عن غبنٍ وعن غبن

    Turning back the raging flood time and again.

    You excelled in praise, made it sweet, and won it -

  55. أعلاق حمدٍ يرى أثمانها سرفاً

    وإنما تملك الأعلاق بالثمن

    Above all people, pure of cheating or being cheated.

    You see the price of lofty praise as extravagance,

  56. وكم زففتُ مديحاً صوتُ منشدهِ

    أحلــــــــــــــى

    Yet only with a price are sumptuous gifts obtained.

    How often the voice of the singer pours forth praise

  57. من كل هيفاءَ أن جرَّت معارضها

    في الحسن فاقت جمال الحور في عدن

    Sweeter than the soft cooing Yahya!

    Sister of benevolence and dew, you were enough for me -

  58. أخت الشذا والندى كنت الكفَّي لها

    والفكــر والفطـــن

    Thought, insight and wisdom.

    Without you no world could be lit -

  59. فلا خلت منك دنيا أنت نيرها

    في حلٍّ وفي ظعن

    In ease or in hardship.

    You bring dead hopes back to life,

  60. فأنت تحيي الأماني من مصارعها

    وأنت تقتل صرفَ الدهر والمحن

    While you kill the turns of fate and ordeals.
