    وخصما ولوعي بابل ونسيمها

    فلست على ألف النفار ألومها

    I forgot my torment in your dwellings

    So I cannot blame the thousands who love you

  3. لقد نجلت أجفانها وخصورها

    كما نحلت أجسامنا ورسومها

    Your eyelids and cheeks have withered

    Just as our bodies and features have faded

  4. سهرت ليالي البين بانت بدورها

    فكيف أبت ألا مقاما نجومها

    The nights of separation stayed awake in succession

    How then could I resist the pull of your stars?

  5. فكم حلبة للغيث دمعي جوادها

    وملحمة للوجد صبري هزيمها

    So many arenas for my pouring tears to race

    And scenes for my burning passion to charge ahead

  6. وحتام أشكو الحب والحب ظالم

    إلى سلوة أعيا فؤادي حليمها

    And I have no choice but to complain of love, though love is unjust

    To the consolation that tried in vain to calm my fevered heart

  7. واستنجد الكتمان والمع بائح

    بأن النوى حال يذم كتومها

    I called on secrecy but my love was too apparent

    For intentions to conceal when the self exposes them

  8. ولولا الهوى ما غر قلبي غريرها

    ولا رام أن يسطو على الأسد يمها

    Without this love, my heart would not have fallen for your deception

    Or dared to subdue the lion in its lair

  9. ولا عجب أن شاقني وهو نازح

    وآية نفس لم يشقها حميمها

    No surprise that you have tormented me by keeping your distance

    A sign of a soul that even intimacy cannot vanquish

  10. وإني وأيام مضت أستعيدها

    كما كنت من قبل النوى أستديمها

    I reminisce of days gone by, remembering them

    As I used to cherish love before our separation

  11. ليشغفني لدن القوام رشيقة

    يحجبه لدن القناة قويمها

    My longing stirs for your slender, graceful figure

    Though the canal obscures her from my gaze

  12. تلوح بروق البيض دون خبائه

    وتلك بروق خلب لو أشيمها

    The lightning of your smile shines from beneath your veil

    While the lightning of your cheeks would illuminate my senses

  13. أجوب الدجى تخشى الأكام ظلامه

    وأغشى الفيافي يتقيها ظليمها

    I traverse the darkness fearing its unknown depths

    And travel the horizon taking care to avoid its shadows

  14. وعندي إذا ما العيس ناثرت ظلام الخطى

    قواف يضيء الدامسات نظيمها

    When the stallion scatters the darkness underfoot

    Her elegant gait illuminates the gloomy landscape

  15. جواد إذا الأنواء ضنت أكفها

    وقور إذا الأطواد خفت حلومها

    A stallion whose palms close when storms grow stingy

    And whose composure calms when crises swell

  16. إذا طحنت حرب فمنه مديرها

    وإن عظمت نعماء فهو مديمها

    When the rub of war whets his blade

    And good fortune magnifies his glory

  17. فتى المجد والملك الطريف جواده

    هجان الخلال المتلدات كريمها

    A noble, refined stallion in his prime

    Of exquisite stock and noble lineage

  18. مؤيد خفاق اللواء على العدى

    مؤثل عادي المعالي قديمها

    Supporting victory's fluttering banner over the enemy

    And resurrecting the ancient monuments of grandeur

  19. صفا وضفا ورداً وعشباً عنده

    جمام الأماني أجدبت وجميمها

    With him, a garden blossoming and meadows green

    Quenching hopes that once withered and faded

  20. هو الروض مخضر الظلال فسيحها

    هو الغيث مخضل الأيادي عميمها

    He is the meadow whose shade stretches far

    The rain that nourishes barren hands

  21. إذا ما عشار المال حلت بربعه

    أذيقت حمام البذل في الوفد كومها

    When appointed funds run low

    The bath of generosity opens to visitors in abundance

  22. وإن جد فالدنيا به وبسيفه

    تشد أواخيها ويحمى حريمها

    And if hardship comes, through him and his sword

    The world shields her honor and guards her harem

  23. هو الواهب الحصداء ضاف لبوسها

    مع الشطبة الجرداء صاف أديمها

    The grantor who matches the barren steppe with harvest

    And pairs the smooth surface with plush drapes

  24. إذ النقع سحب والسيوف بروقها

    والأسماء والعوالي نجومها

    As white swords gleam with blood in their wake

    And lofty deeds shine like stars in a sky

  25. وموردها كالوفد والجمع ضيق

    مثقفة صوراً إلى الهام هيمها

    His gifts pour like a stream though space is cramped

    Objects heaped up reaching towards the horizon

  26. ومطعامها والعام يغبر أفقه

    ومطعانها والخيل تدمى كلومها

    His feast laid out while famine haunts the land

    His blades dripping while horses' mouths foam

  27. جزيل الندى سبط النوال حميده

    بحيث الحيا جعد البنان ذميمها

    Generous with dew, noble in character and deed

    So the twisted branches of snakes may straighten

  28. صفاه وقار يستطال شمامها

    ورب صفات يستطاب شميمها

    His clarity and dignity lengthen his stature

    While many virtues sweeten his scent

  29. إذا أظلمت يهماء فهو صاحبها

    وإن أشكلت غماء فهو عليمها

    When darkness of worries shrouds the realm

    He is its keeper, its guide and mentor

  30. وإن لقيت لد الكماة رماحه

    فما تلتقي أرواحها وجسومها

    If you clash with the champion warriors' spears

    Their souls and bodies will never survive the meeting

  31. زكا نجره في العالمين وخيمه

    مهيب تلاع المأثرات وخيمها

    Pure of origin, his pride turns to his Creator

    As the place where noble souls once lodged

  32. أصاب صميم المال سهم نواله

    وأضحى له لب العلى وصميمها

    They have reached and surpassed the peak of perfection

    And fulfilled and transcended the utmost completion

  33. فتى بأسه والصفح في يوم سخطه

    ويوم الرضى بؤس العدى ونعيمها

    Through them beauty entered the world, its pillars stand firm

    Its meanings refined, its structures made elegant

  34. إذا عثرت بالهام بيض سيوفه

    فليلة نقع ليس يكبو بهيمها

    They establish its channels when disorder appears

    And mend its misfortunes when calamities strike

  35. وإن هي غنت والدماء مدامها

    فما هو إلا خلها ونديمها

    Who else but them could fix its crookedness?

    Without their people, who could maintain it?

  36. قضوب شباة العزم يعزى فخاره

    إلى أسرة بذَّ المواضي عزيمها

    They built up its edifices, so who else could conceive them?

    Will these lofty pillars crumble or will their repairer resurrect them?

  37. أريغت وقد جاوزا الكمال مهودها

    وشد وقد حاوزا التمام تميمها

    Egypt was saved when her beloved was absent

    For her protector and greatest never vanished

  38. بهم زينت الدنيا وقر عمودها

    ودقت معانيها وجلت علوقها

    The ways of Omar were followed

    As the events of the era were confronted

  39. مصاليتها إن حل بأس أسودها

    مصاعيبها إن جل خطب قرومها

    I thought it justice, the gifts he offered

    As he tended to the complainers and enriched the destitute

  40. أقاموا قناة الملك بعد اعوجاجها

    وقد عز لولا قومه من يقيمها

    He drew out the tails of clouds over its soil

    Air purified, ruins rebuilt

  41. حموه فمن خلق سواهم يبيحه

    واعلوا مبانيه فمن ذا يرومها

    So thanks to a world that you are one of its wonders

    Impossible, when it produced your like, to blame it

  42. أترب العوالي والمعالي فهذه

    تحطم أو هاتيك يحيي رميمها

    An untainted ode whose virtues were never doubtful

    Nor did it fall short of earning the highest praises

  43. تداركت مصراً حين غاب عزيزها

    فما غاب حامي سربها وعظيمها

    Favored, rising above the stars in rank

    Destined, surpassing those who share her fate

  44. لقد سرت فيها سيرة عمرية

    يكف أكف الحادثات عمومها

    She has witnessed its troubles with her beauty

    And its adversaries praised her, appeased

  45. وأحسبتها عدلاً وبذل المواهب

    فأدعي شاكيها وأثرى عديمها

    She traveled, cutting through the desert, her mirage swirling

    Souls inhaling her scent, poisoned to their doom

  46. سحبت ذيول السحب فوق دهاسها

    فروض عافيها وقام هشيمها

    To the victorious king, the tumult

    Lights fires in the necks of the lowly like Gehenna

  47. فشكراً لدنيا أنت بعض هباتها

    محال وقد جادت بمثلك لومها

    While the Lord of Gifts, his perfume is like musk

    When ingratitude hides it, decay reveals it

  48. وقافية عذراء لم تأت ريبة

    ولا خام عن كسب المحامد خيمها

    So many skies did not meet with their lightning

    Or feed their clouds and rain them

  49. منعمة تعلو على النجم منعة

    مسومة تغلو على من يسومها

    Thinking the Most High would sanctify her station

    And the Protector would shelter her in His care

  50. لقد شهدت ضراتها بجمالها

    وقرظها أضدادها وخصومها

    None but you can humble the likes of her

    Or honor her kingdom, your equal

  51. سرت تقطع البيداء يهفو سرابها

    وتستنشق الأرواح تذكو سمومها

  52. إلى الملك المظفر والوغى

    تشب بأمواه الرقاب جحيمها

  53. ورب الهبات الغر كالمسك نفحة

    إذا الجحد أخفاها أقر نمومها

  54. وكم من سماء لم تلقها بروقها

    ولا أطعمتها سحبها وغيومها

  55. وظن العلى أن سوف يزكي مقامها

    ويشملها هامي الأيادي مقيمها

  56. لقد ذل إلا عند مثلك مثلها

    وعز على ملك سواك قدومها
