1. Remembrance of her brought wasting sickness;

    Lamya—far away is her dwelling.

  2. She shed the blood of the

lovers, and did not fear her sins.

  3. So her denial lies in her eyelids,

and in her cheek lies her confession.

  4. The wounds are mine; how, then, upon

her cheeks do their traces appear?

  5. O choking pang already tasted by

    her anklet and her bracelet!

  6. She appears to us; down from

heaven's full moon falls her veil.

  7. A moonlike beauty has wronged

my heart, though my heart is her neighbor.

  8. O blessing that vanished on the morning

when I did not know her worth!

  9. She dwelt in my inmost heart, and deserted

stood her ruins and her dwellings.

  10. Had they been able, they would have

    spoken of our passion—her stones.

  11. The rain-clouds' water-bearing camels were slaughtered in

her courtyards, along with their pregnant she-camels.

  12. And swaying branches of the ban-tree,

    and breasts are their fruit.

  13. How many a heart has been offered to

the peril of love by their swaying bough!

  14. My tales of her are night-time talk;

    their nightly sessions never end.

  15. My grief for a soul you slew!

And no vengeance for it can be won.

  16. It is intoxication, with no end

    to its hangover until death.

  17. O waft of fragrance at al-Na'f,

whose perfumer brought me burning anguish!

  18. Were it not for chaste Udhri love, never

would tidings of her have pleased us.

  19. And through Rayya's fragrance, sweet in scent are

her bay laurel and her 'arar flowers.

  20. She revived our ardent longing, and

her secrets died within the heart.

  21. And crescent moons at al-Khayf attained

    their fullness, to my misery.

  22. For their waning is not feared,

    but their concealment is feared.

  23. And from gazelles she has the enchantment of

her eyelids, and her shy retreat.

  24. And in darkness she unfastens from

a form like midmorning light her buttons.

  25. I swear by what is enfolded

    at Mecca by its curtains:

  26. Indeed, a heart has been violated

whose sanctity may not be violated.

  27. She pelted the heart with her embers

    when I pelted its Jamrat.

  28. So may they be watered and greeted by

the surging cloud among life-giving rain-clouds.

  29. From every night-traveling rain-cloud, clear

are its pools and its deep waters.

  30. When every rugged tract is a cheek,

its cheek-down has crept forth as greenery.

  31. Safety is granted against the

deadly droughts by dwelling near it.

  32. And if drought is feared,

then King al-Mu'azzam is its neighbor.
