1. An exaltation such as is bestowed upon non-Arabs and Arabs,

    for no one rises to the seven shining stars.

  2. And they bestowed nothing but your radiance upon the jewels,

    as the full moon’s light shone through gaps in the clouds.

  3. You did not awaken poetry’s eye from the drowsiness of sleep,

    and you rescued people of merit from drought’s fang.

  4. And you came forth in those garments, rising,

    as your brother, the full moon, rises by night above the caravan.

  5. For it was nothing but the goblet’s adornment with wine,

    assuredly—and behold, the body is adorned by the heart.

  6. The enemies have surely recognized your excellence among them,

    and far be it from dawn to fear the veils.

  7. You freely give what your two hands hold, out of generosity;

    and is pouring rain’s custom anything but gain?

  8. So ease up, for wealth complains of parting;

    and show forgiveness, for poetry fears reproach.

  9. And you have become a pole for the possessor of them all,

    and the rising stars take their course around the pole.

  10. For the kings have followed no path of generosity

    without a guide from you, both far and near.

  11. You yearn to bestow what you possess,

    like a thirsty youth’s longing for cool, sweet water.

  12. And gifts and their bestowal are sweet in your eyes,

    as the beloved looks beautiful in the ardent lover’s eye.

  13. To you, Safi al-Din, I have raised my speech,

    to the overflowing bounty and the spacious abode.

  14. And I kept it away from one ignorant of its worth;

    and what need has a cowardly weakling for a keen sword?
