1. O repository of my secret, and you whose covenant is fair,

for whom I fear and worry because of the reproacher.

  2. I confide to you my longing for you; yet it is only

for lofty glory that I yearn or pine.

a wealth of which I am forever destitute.

my heart—burning in the waters of charm.

  9. And before it, I had never seen anything bear dew

and endure; nor a sun with no soul as its rising-place.

it gathers and disperses in the enchantment of intellect.

  12. I spoke of the favor you hung about my neck,

and in speaking of you, the ring-necked dove resembled me.

  13. But for the favors of his two companions' court—

whose helpful, kindly gifts accompany me—

  14. there would be no fair renown whose mounts

hasten and trot to the farthest end of the world.

  15. He has spacious watering-grounds for delegations and hospitality,

when a straitened opening of the year holds them back.

  16. His virtues are a beauty mark on the earth's cheek,

stirring longing, and a luster on the face of virtues.

  17. Panegyrists before him have lied—except for me—

but when I speak of him, I speak the truth.

  18. So may those remnants never cease, amid lofty glory,

to be meanings learned from him and stolen.
