O beholder, whose insight has grown blind to me,
O you whose sightless eyes see not
And how can you deny the lights of the lamps?
How can you deny the lamps' bright glow?
You have tormented humankind in times past and times to come,
You've led mankind to past and future woe
Unjustly—so may you die only in agony!
With tyranny, save what the dawn might show
O you, keenest of al-nashā [unclear] at sinking a fishhook into what is forbidden,
O setter of the traps of sin unlawful
He catches it with nets made of sharp blades.
To catch with nets of evil mesh and row
Were you to stretch a hand toward the fish of the sky,
If you reached up to grasp the whale of heaven
Then you would surely leave it a lifeless carcass.
It would escape your grip, no life would flow
This, though you trace your lineage to al-Zaqzuq—
Yet you claim the falcon's noble line
How, then, if you were descended from crocodiles?
How much worse if you were of tyrants born!
