1. ما الروضُ نَديان الثرى متعطرا

    والغُصْنُ فَينان الذرى متأطرا

    Neither meadows are fragrant with flowers,

    Nor branches are adorned with fruits.

  2. والجوّ أدْكَن والفضاءُ مُدَبّجاً

    والظِلّ أحوى والنسيم معنبرا

    The air is darker, the space is decorated,

    The shade is warmer, the breeze is ambergris scented.

  3. والكأس في كفّ الغلام مُرَصّعاً

    والعِقْد في نحْر الفتاة مجوهرا

    The cup is ornamented in the hand of the lad,

    The necklace is bejeweled around the neck of the lass.

  4. وظباء وجْرَة في الخدود أوَانِساً

    والبدر من أفق الغلالة مُسْفرا

    Does and wild cows are companions on the cheeks,

    The full moon rises from the horizon of darkness.

  5. والجيدُ أتْلع والشِفاه لواعساً

    والجَفنُ أو طف ناعِساً متكسرا

    The plaits are curly, the lips are alluring,

    The eyelids are languorous, the glances are broken.

  6. والقدُّ أهيف والبنان مُطرَّفا

    والخصرُ غرثان الوِشاحُ مُخصّرا

    The statures are slender, the teeth are aligned,

    The waists are fragile, the scarves are short.

  7. يوماً بأوقع في القلوب لمن وعى

    حسناً وأشهى للنفوس لمن درى

    A day that inspired hearts of those who apprehended,

    Beauty that allured souls of those who realized.

  8. من طيب أوصاف وَلجْنَ مسامعي

    حتى سكرتُ وما عرفت المُسْكرا

    Of good traits and tender words to my ears,

    Until I got drunk without drinking liquor.

  9. أرشفتني كأسَ النعيم يديرها

    بعْضي عليّ ألذّ من سنة الكرى

    The cup of bliss circulated towards me,

    Sweeter to me than long years.

  10. قد أوْدَعْتُهنَّ البراعةُ أسْطُرا

    كُسِرَتْ على روض البَهاء منوّرا

    I have deposited them in masterpieces,

    Scattered across the garden of splendor.

  11. لسَراة عصر من خَيار بني العُلا

    تأبى مآثر فضلهم أن تُحصَرا

    For an elite generation of the best of manhood,

    Whose superior merits cannot be confined.

  12. من نوّه الحسن الهمام بذكرهم

    حتى حسبنا الطِرْس ينبت جوهرا

    He who extolled the praise of the honorable,

    We deemed sequins grow gems.

  13. وروى حديثهمُ فكان يراعه

    سَحبان وائِل والأناملُ منبرا

    And narrated their tales, so it was guarded

    By Suhban, Wael, and fingers holding the pulpits.

  14. قومٌ إِذا القلم استهلَّ بوصفهم

    في الطِرس يوشكُ أن يرفَّ ويُزْهِرا

    A people, when the pen inaugurated depicting them,

    Saffron in the gardens nearly bloomed and flowered.

  15. فهم الجهابذة الكرام ومن بهم

    كانت ربوع العلم سامية الذرا

    They are the honorable and noble ones, and those related to them,

    Were the lofty lands of knowledge.

  16. فلئن أبادهم الزمانُ فطالما

    كانوا له عِلْقاً نفسياً أخطرا

    If time made them perish, they have long been,

    To it a precious self and dearer.

  17. أوْ عُدْن آثاراً وكنَّ حقائقاً

    فسبيلهم أن يستطاب فيذكرا

    Or enduring traces and true facts,

    Their way is to be acclaimed and mentioned.

  18. فسقى بني الطيبيّ من دِيَم الرضى

    سحّ السحائب رائحاً ومبكّرا

    It watered the good family from the river of bliss,

    Clouds pouring down perfume in the early dawn.

  19. ومعاهد البدر المفسّر يا له

    بدراً تسامَى شأوه ومفسّرا

    And the clearly interpreted full moon institutes – oh how

    Sublime is its position and clearly interpreted!

  20. وترى عماد الدين وابن عماه

    ذاك السريّ فكم أفاد وحرّرا

    You see the pillar of religion and his cousin –

    That secretive one - how much he benefited and composed!

  21. وفخار نابلس من اقتعد السُّهى

    وأسالَ من فيض البراعة كوثرا

    And the pride of Nablus that straightened the tumors,

    And drew from the abundance of mastery a sea.

  22. وعُلا بني المنقار شمس كما لِهم

    طَوْد العلوم قربن آساد الشَّرى

    And the high family of Al Minqar like a sun belonging to them,

    A landmark of knowledge, intimate to the noble hills.

  23. وترى ابن داود المحدِّث من رعى

    سُنَنَ الهدى حتى رقا وتصدّرا

    And you see the hadith scholar Ibn Dawood who cultivated

    The ways of guidance until he surpassed and led.

  24. وروت ربوعَ الأحدبيّ سحائب

    جَون تُعيد ثراه روضاً أخضرا

    And the meadows of Al Ahdeb nourished by clouds

    Of tender downpour, turning the garden green.

  25. وسقت سَرَاة للأفاضل بعدَهم

    من كل حَبْر النسيم إِذا انبرى

    And it watered, after them, an elite generation

    With every ink the breeze carried when it blew.

  26. سادوا وشادوا للعلوم معاقلاً

    كانت معاقِدها مُوَثّقةَ العُرى

    They prospered and founded for sciences strongholds,

    With tied firmly bonds.

  27. أَيامَ كان العيش أرغد ناعماً

    والحظ مخضرَّ الأراكة مثمرا

    Days when living was most comfortable and plentiful,

    And luck ripened the vines, fruitful,

  28. كانوا وكان الفضل ضربة لازبٍ

    لبني العُلا وسواه شيئاً منكرا

    As they were, and merit was an exclusive privilege

    To the highborn unlike the rest - undeserved.

  29. وغدوا وفي الآفاق من سرواتهم

    أرجٌ يخال فتيق مسك أذفرا

    And they became - across the horizons - from their loftiness

    A scent making one fancy musk when sniffing ambergris.

  30. حيّا دمشق فما أرق نسيمها

    حملت على الكَرم الطباعَ فأثّرا

    It saluted Damascus, so fine was its breeze,

    Inclining by nature to generosity, influencing.

  31. بلدٌ زرى بالشِعب مَوْردُ طيبها

    وزهت على نهْرِ الأُبُلَّة منظرا

    A land prosperous of ripe fruits from its branches,

    Beautifying the banks of Barada river.

  32. وسقى رياض النيْربين فكم بها

    بمُنى فضينا منه حظاً أوْفَرا

    And it watered Rayyan’s gardens - how much

    Bliss we drew from it, more copious.

  33. نَغْدوا فَنهْصُرُ للتآلف بيننا

    غُصْناً تَورّد بالصفا وأثمرا

    We get up to foster harmony amongst us,

    A branch reddening with clarity and fruitful.

  34. ونروّح الأطيار تندب شَجْوها

    فَكَأنَّ في اللَّهوات منها مزهرا

    And solace the birds lamenting their passion,

    As if amongst the meadows some are flowering.

  35. والربرب الأنسى ينشر عطفَه

    ويميت في الأجفان طرفاً أحْوَرا

    The friendly nightingale spreading its affection,

    And slaying with glances from the eyelids an infatuated.

  36. والبانة الرّيا يجمشها الصَّبا

    فترى الندى شَذْرا هناك منثرا

    The pleasant breeze messing her bangs,

    You see the dew scattered here and there.

  37. وحَمامها الشادي يغرّد مُنْشداً

    أدر الزجاجة فالنسيم قد انبرا

    And its steady pigeons cooing melodiously,

    “Pass the bottle, for the breeze blew perfect.”

  38. بالله يا ريحَ الجنائب شارفي

    تلك الغصون وجاذبيها المئزرا

    “Please O southern winds join

    Those branches and shake their scarfs.”

  39. واستعطفي قضب الأراك وغازلي

    زهر الرياض مورداً وكفَّرَا

    “Seduce the rods of the arbors and flirt

    With the garden’s flowers, a watering place making amends.”

  40. واستعطفي جَفْنَ البهارة زاهياً

    وترشّفي ثغر الأقاح موشّرا

    “Seduce the eyelid of the delighted jasmine

    And sip from the mouth of buds partly open.”

  41. واسترقصي بان الهضاب ورواحي

    تلك المعاهد بالسّلام معطّرا

    “Scrutinize the dwellings of plateaus and wander around,

    Those institutes with greetings scented.”

  42. فلكم قضيت بها لبُانَة وامقٍ

    وصحبت فيها للأَحبة معشرا

    For how many tender nights and beloved ones

    I spent therein and gathered friends.

  43. فسقت مغانيها السواجم كلّما

    آنست منها في الفؤاد تذكّرا

    Its passionate songs the cops voiced whenever

    In my heart their memory was evoked.
