1. حَفَّتْ بوادي الغُوطة ال

    غناء أطيارٌ شُهودُ

    Encircling the valley of the Ghouta, the—

    —lush one—were birds as witnesses.

  2. لو ساجلتها القينتا

    ن لما صغى لهما يزيد

    Had the two songstresses vied with them in song,

    Yazid would never have inclined his ear to the pair.

  3. وسما على بَرَدى وبا

    ناسٍ وثوراها يزيد

    And above Barada and Ba—

    —nias and its Thawra, Yazid rose.

  4. وأتى الربيع كأنّما

    وافت على يده تزيدُ

    And spring arrived, as though

    at his hand it came to flourish,

  5. تُنشي بُرودَ أزاهرٍ

    أبَداً محاسنها تزيد

    weaving robes of blossoms

    whose loveliness forever increases.
