1. خطرنا بحكم اللهو للسفح خطرة

    سقاها الحيا من خطرة وسقا السفحا

    We roamed by whim to the meadow's slope, a perilous roam,

    The living water quenched its thirst, and the slope's thirst, from that roam,

  2. ثنينا بها نحو البطالة والصبا

    عنان النهى من حيث لم يعرف النصحا

    There we inclined towards idleness and youth,

    The reins of reproof loosed, where advice was not known,

  3. ومرت على الآثار منها خلائف

    نهضنا إِليها كيف شاء الهوى صبحا

    And successors passed by its ruins,

    We rose to it however desire willed at dawn,

  4. وكلاً رعينا فيه روضاً مفوفاً

    وأوسعنا شادي البكور به صدحا

    And each of us pastured in it a lush meadow,

    And we opened its morning horizons with song,

  5. وأهدي لنا ركب النسيم لطائماً

    من النشر لا ينفك ينفحها نفحا

    And the riding of the breeze brought us gentle scents,

    Spreading from blossoms that blow with every breath,

  6. فما زال يقتاد النفوس ادّكارُها

    ويوري لزند الشوق وسط الحشا قدْحا

    So it continued leading our souls in their musings,

    Kindling for the flame of passion amidst thickets, a spark,

  7. إِلى أن تنادينا لتجديد عهدها

    بيوم سرحنا فيه طوع المنى سرحا

    Until it called us to renew its covenant,

    On a day we roamed it freely, following our every whim,

  8. لغربي ذاك السفح والموطن الذي

    شهدنا به الدير المشيَّد والصرحا

    To that western slope and dwelling where

    We witnessed the solid monastery and palace,

  9. نحاول فيه الأنس من رونق الصبا

    ونضرب عن راجي الهموم به صفحا

    Attempting the pleasures of youth in its charm,

    And turning away from the seeker of worries with disregard,

  10. بمستشرق للغوطتين وما حوت

    من الحسن مما راح يعجزنا شرحا

    At the two banks, and what they contained

    Of beauty that we fell short fully capturing,

  11. تراث لدينا منه جنة عَبْقَرٍٍ

    جرت حولها الأنهار في سائر الأنحا

    We have inherited from it a fragrant paradise,

    With rivers flowing around it in every direction,

  12. وممتحن بالنرد عن غير خبرة

    تخلف عنا واستبد به قبحا

    And challenged at dice by one unskilled,

    Who fell short against us and was marred with shame,

  13. أيزعم أن الفرس أوصت له به

    وحجبه عن غيره ملكها شحَّا

    Claiming the Persians bequeathed it to him,

    And none but him, being their treasure, could claim it,

  14. وأن زراد شت استعان بفكره

    على وضعه حتى استفاد به نجحا

    That Zaradusht used his mind in its making,

    Until he succeeded by utilizing it as stratagem,

  15. وأن مليك الهند وابن مليكها

    بِلهْورَ قد أعيته فطنته كدحا

    And the King of India and his prince in Lahore

    Exhausted their minds struggling at it,

  16. فحث على الشطرمج فكر ابن داهِر

    ولولاه لم يسطِع لمُرتَجِه فتحا

    So the mind of Ibn Dahir was spurred for innovation,

    And without him, its conquest would not have come to be,

  17. ويزعم أن النرد أربح بلغة

    يبلغها الإِنسان أن حاول الربحا

    And claiming that dice in eloquent tongue,

    Yields the most profit when a human seeks profit,

  18. رويدك لا تحفل بزعمك واطرح

    وساوس نفسٍ قد رُميت بها كفحا

    Gently, pay no heed to your claim, and dispel,

    The delusions of a self that stumbled confused,

  19. أتعرض عن قصد اللحوق بجمعنا

    وتقصد أمراً تستحق به القَدحا

    Will you turn away from joining our company,

    And seek something that earns you only rebuke?

  20. ونحن بني الآداب من خير معشر

    يودُّ المُعَليّ لو يكون لهم قِدحا

    While we are the best society of cultured folk,

    The noble wishes he could be counted among them,

  21. فتباً لزعم خالف الرُشد ربه

    وبدّل عن نور الصباح به جُنْحا

    So destruction to the claim that opposes what is right,

    And substitutes for the light of dawn thereby, darkness,

  22. وما كان إِلماعِي بشأنك إِنّه

    مهمُّ ولكني عثرت به مزحا

    I did not intend to expose you, though indeed,

    It is important, yet I tripped into jest,

  23. وما القصد إِلاّ ذكر أيامنا التي

    مرحنا بحكم اللهو في ظلها مرحا

    The only aim being to mention our days that

    We roamed by whim in their shade, roaming playfully.
