1. وابق واسلم لوْجنَةِ الدهر خالا

    طالِعاً في سما الزمان هِلالا

    Persist and submit to the vicissitudes of fate

    Rising in the sky of time like a crescent

  2. فتنال الكمالَ شيئاً فشيئاً

    كترَّقي الهلال حالاً فحالا

    So you may attain perfection little by little

    As the crescent progresses from state to state

  3. بالِغاً مَبْلَغاً من الشَرَفِ الأس

    نى يردّ العيون حَسْرى كِلالا

    Until you reach the highest level of nobility

    That makes eyes shed copious tears

  4. في علوّ لا ينقضي أمَدَ الده

    رِ وفخرٍ ما إِنْ يخاف الزوالا

    In never-ending ascension throughout the ages

    And pride that does not fear decline

  5. وادع في نظمِكَ القوافيَ يأتي

    ن رجالاً متى أردت ارتجالا

    And compose rhymes in your poem that come

    Spontaneously when you wish to improvise

  6. واتخذ صَهْوةَ الثرَّيا مقاماً

    ناظِماً أنجمَ الثرّيا مَقالا

    And make the Pleiades your dwelling

    Connecting the stars of Pleiades in your discourse

  7. أيُّ شعرٍ لك اعتصرت قوافي

    ه من السِحْر هيج البلبالا

    What poetry have you extracted whose rhymes

    Are like magic that excites the nightingale

  8. وسُلافٍ متى أردتُ التداوي

    من خُماري شرْبتُها جريالا

    And wine when I wish to indulge

    I drink it pure from my goblet

  9. ومن الخمر ما يكونُ مُباحا

    ومن السِحْر ما يكون حَلالا

    And of wine what is permissible

    And of magic what is lawful

  10. ومن النظْم ما يُصاغُ عُقُوداً

    ومن النَثْرِ ما يَسيلُ زُلالا

    And of verse what is strung like necklaces

    And of prose what flows smooth like drizzle

  11. نَفَثَاتٌ لو شبَّهوا سِحْرَ هارو

    ت بها لم يكن عليهم محالا

    Whispers that if compared to Harut's magic

    Would not be implausible

  12. هي فعلُ العيونِ في مُهْجة الص

    صَبّ وخلَّ الطُلاوبُلّة الغَزالا

    It is the work of eyes in the ardor of passion

    That freed the gazelle to roam

  13. سَرِقاتٌ لكنها من سجايا

    ك بها صرتَ تفتحُ الأقفالا

    Stealthy glances yet from your qualities

    With them you unlock what is locked

  14. حَسْبُ عينٍ رأتك قرةَ عينٍ

    وفؤادٍ خَطَرْتَ فيه اشتعالا

    It suffices that an eye saw you, delight of an eye

    And a heart you set aflame

  15. ليَ شوقٌ إِليك رقَّ إِلى أنْ

    صارَ يُدعي صبابةً واعتلالا

    I have a yearning for you that softened

    Until it was called lovesickness and weakness

  16. كل يوم أقولُ تجمَعُنَا الأي

    يامُ والدهرُ يعْكِسُ الآمالا

    Each day I say we will unite

    While fate reverses hopes

  17. صبحتك الصَبا شَمالا وناهي

    ك إِذا كانت الصَبا سُحَيْراً شمالا

    Your morning is north and your evening south

    If the morning is south your evening is north

  18. بتحياتِ مُغْرمٍ لو هدى الرك

    بَ سناها أزالَ عنه الضَّلالا

    With the regards of a lover whose mount

    If guided would remove his misguidance
