أَمِنَ الودادِ تزاورٌ بتكَلفِ

من بعد طولِ تقاعُسٍ وتخلّفِ

هيهاتَ أن تزدان منك خليقةٌ

كلّفتها فالودُّ ليس بمختفِ

My dear, refrain from deceiving my reproach

With pretend affection and sincerity

فاقصرْ فديتك عن مُغَالطة النهى

بمخائِلٍ تزري بودّك واكففِ

It is I who clung to the branch of love

Until it almost broke from lack of reciprocity

فهي التي هَصرت بغصن الودِّ حت

تى كادَ أن يزري لغير تعطُّفِ

And I remain as devoted as you know me to be

So do not ever be other than loving and faithful

وأنا عليه كما عهدتَ فلا تكن
