تَألّقَ برق من غريب اللوى جنحا

فأوسع زَنْدَ الشوق في مهجتي قدحا

A flash of lightning with strange colors spread its wings.

So it widened the fire of yearning in my innermost being like a goblet.

وأزكى الجوى مني لسالفه الهوى

نسيم شذا الخيريّ من سائر الأنحا

And it purified my passion for the one I loved in the past,

Like a gentle eastern breeze blowing from all directions.

وأذكرني الوجدَ القديم سويْجعٌ

يرجَّع في إِثر الهديل له صدحا

And it reminded me of that old love, though anguish

That echoes after the trilling, giving rise to laments.

أرنَّ بشجو هاجَ بي كلَّ لوعى

لعهد سفحت الدمع في إِثره سفحا

It sang with a yearning that stirred every sorrow in me

For that time when tears gushed copiously after it.
