1. أَبى جَلَدٌ أَن أَحمِلَ البَينَ وَالقلى

    فَكَيفَ جمعتَ الصَدَّ لي وَالتَرحلا

    My patient heart refused to bear estrangement and anguish

    So why did you gather aloofness towards me and travel?

  2. وَميَّلكَ الواشي إِلى الصَدِّ وَالنَوى

    وَلا عَجَبٌ لِلغُصنِ أَن يَتَميَّلا

    And your reproacher inclined you to aloofness and remoteness

    It is no wonder for the branch to incline and sway

  3. وَما كانَ لي ذَنبٌ يُقال وَإِنَّما

    رآكَ سَميعاً قابِلاً فَتَقوّلا

    I am not to blame, rather it is said

    You heard me, you received, so you spoke untruthfully

  4. فَحَمَّلتَني ما لا أَطيق وَانّما

    يُكلّفني حُبيِّكَ أَن أَتَحَملا

    You burdened me with more than I can bear

    Only your love for me urges me to endure

  5. رَعى اللَهُ مَن لَم يَرعَ عَهداً رَعيتُهُ

    له وَكَلا طَرفاً بِقَتلي مُوكّلا

    May God shepherd the one who did not shepherd the covenant I kept for him

    With both eyes set on killing me

  6. تَبَدَّل بي مِن غَير جُرمٍ مَلالةً

    وَيمنعُي حُبيّهِ أَن أَتبدّلا

    Without any fault from me, weariness changed you

    And your love prevents me from changing

  7. إِذا اِزدرتُ وَجداً زادَ صداً وَكُلَّما

    تَذلّلتُ مِن فَرط الغَرام تَدلّلا

    When I become emboldened, his aloofness increases

    And whenever I humble myself from intense passion, he acts arrogantly

  8. وَيَقتُلُني عَمداً لأَنّي أُحِبُّهُ

    أَلَيسَ عَجيباً أَنّ أحبَّ فأقتلا

    And he kills me deliberately because I love him

    Is it not strange that I should love and be killed?

  9. اذا صرّحت باليأس آياتُ هجره

    دَعَتني مُنى الأَطماعِ أَن أَتأولا

    When I lose hope in his estrangement signs

    The hopes' wishes call me to interpret

  10. وَقَد كنت أَشكو الهجر قَبلَ رَحيلهِ

    فَأَصبحتُ أَبكي الهجرَ لَمذا ترحّلا

    I used to complain of estrangement before his departure

    Yet now I weep over estrangement, why did you depart?

  11. اذا اِشتَقتُه عَلّلتُ بالبَدرُ ناظِري

    وَقابَلتُ عُلويَ الرياحِ مُقبّلا

    When I miss him, I blame the full moon for my watcher

    And I meet the blowing winds with kisses

  12. وَغايَةُ مَن يَشتاقُ ما لا يَنالَهُ

    وَلَيسَ بِسالٍ عَنه أَن يَتَحلّلا

    The utmost of one who misses what he cannot attain

    Is not asking to be relieved for he cannot let go

  13. وَيا حَبَّذا عِندَ الصَباحِ سِواكُه

    إِذا ما دَعى الصَباحِ وَحيهَلا

    O for the morn's drinking-fellows besides him

    When the morn calls its first cup

  14. يقبّل مَكنوناً مِن الدُرِّ رائِقا

    وَيرشُفُ مَعسولاً مِن الريقِ سَلسلا

    Kissing a hidden pearl, sipping clear wine

    Sweet swallows trickling in succession

  15. وَيا عاذِليَّ الآمِريَّ بِتَركِهِ

    نَهاني هَواهُ أَن أَطيعَ وَأَقبلا

    O you who blame me, who command me to leave him

    His love prevents me from obeying and complying

  16. أَقِلا والّا فاِنظرا حُسنَ وَجههِ

    فان أَنتُما اِستَحسنتُما العَذلَ فاِعذِلا

    Reproach less, just look at his beautiful face

    If you find reproach beautiful, then reproach

  17. وَلا تنكرا منّيِ النُحولَ فانَّني

    لألقى الَّذي أَدناه يُذبِل يَذبلا

    Do not deny me emaciation, for I

    Will meet whom I approach in bloom to wilt

  18. دَعاه وَما يَهوى وان كانَ ظالِماً

    فَلَست أَرى عنه وان جارَ مَعدِلا

    I called him and what he desires, even if he is unjust

    For I do not see, even if he is unjust, a fair substitute

  19. وَلا تَعذِلاه في دَمي أَن يريقه

    فَما قَدرُ مِثلي أَن يُلامَ وَيُعذَلا

    Do not reproach him for shedding my blood

    For the like of me does not deserve blame and reproach

  20. يمثِّلهُ ظَبيُ الكِناسِ مُشابِهاً

    وَيُشبِهُهُ بَدرُ التَمامِ مُمَثّلا

    A doe of Kinaas resembles him

    While the full moon resembles him in its perfection

  21. وَيُخجِلُ مَيّاسَ القَضيبِ تَمايُلاً

    وَيفضَحُ مُنهال الكَثيبِ تَهيُّلا

    It embarrasses the swaying branches with leaning

    And disgraces the bending branches with bending

  22. سَقى ربعَه نَوءُ تهلَّل باكياً

    فَقابَله نَورُ الرُبى مُتَهلِّلا

    The languor of Tuhallul cried over his meadow

    So the light of youth met it glittering

  23. مُدرهمُ ديباج الرِياضِ مُدنَراً

    مُتَوِّجُ أَعلا الأُقحوانِ مكلّلا

    The lined brocade of gardens wrinkled

    Crowned, atop the meadows, bejeweled

  24. كَأَنَّ نَدىً مِن كَفِّ يوسُفَ جادَهُ

    فَأَصبَحَ موشيّ الجَوانبِ أَخضَلا

    As if a dew from Yusuf's palm flowed unto him

    So the edges of his garment became greenest

  25. كَريمٌ عَلى العافين كالغَيثِ مُسبِلاً

    شَديدٌ عَلى العادين كاللَيث مُشبِلا

    Generous to the virtuous like pouring rain

    Harsh to the hostile like a baring lion

  26. وَسَيلٌ إِذا ما المالُ أَقنى فأَجزَلا

    وَسَيفٌ اذا ما سُلَّ أَفنى وَقَلّلا

    A torrent if possessions are stingy, he is generous

    A sword if drawn, he vanquishes and reduces

  27. فَما سُلَّ إِلذا أَهلك الشِركَ حَدُّهُ

    وَلا سُئِلَ الاحسان الّا تَهلَّلا

    His sword when unsheathed parts what is between the skulls and hips

    In him gathered ferocity, forbearance and softness

  28. حَياةٌ اذا يَرضى حِمامٌ اذا سَطا

    قَديرٌ اذا يَعفو عَفيفٌ اذا خَلا

    And joined to abundant excellence, excellence

    So his ferocity returned every valiant cowardly

  29. وَحُلوٌ اذا والَيتَه لَذَّ أَريهُ

    لَدَيكَ وان عادَيته عادَ حَنظَلا

    And his softness left every clement one miserly

    He sees what women are entitled to as an obligation

  30. اذا سَيفُه في الرَوعِ فارَقَ غِمده

    يُفَرِّقُ ما بَينَ الجَماجِم وَالطُلى

    When he sees men entitled to supererogation

    No feast except the most generous one's generosity overflows

  31. تَجَمَّعَ فيهِ البأسُ وَالحلمُ وَالنَدى

    وَضَمَّ إلى الفضل الغَزيرِ التَفَضُلا

    And the most generous people when they feast are lavish

    If the angels stripped themselves of the garb of praise

  32. فَرَدَّ جَباناً بأسُه كُلَّ باسِلٍ

    وَخلّى نَداهُ كل سَمحٍ مُبخّلا

    He would rebuff them and descend

    And if they were stingy and made praise cheap

  33. يَرى نائِلات العُرفِ فَرضاً مُعَيَناً

    إِذا ما رأى الاسُ الفُروضَ تَنفُّلا

    He would see praise, even if expensive, cheap

    If glory ascended in the sky he would have ascended

  34. وَما عيد الّا أَغزر العَودُ جودَهُ

    وَأَسخى بَني الدُنيا اذا عيد أَوشَلا

    If given the world's wealth he would have given

    Had the One who appointed him secured his subjects

  35. اذا ما عَرى الأَملاكَ مِن ثَوبِ مِدحَةٍ

    تَردّى بِهِ مِن دونِهِم وَتنزلا

    He would have guaranteed their provisions

    When resolved against enemies, he left their countries

  36. وان بَخلوا واِستَغلو الحمدَ مُرخَصاً

    رأى أَرخصَ الأَشياءَ حَمداً وان غَلا

    With an army whose ferocity filled the highlands

    And his view a shining light when he set forth

  37. وَلو أَنَّ مَجداً في السَماءِ سَما لَهُ

    وَلَو سُئِلَ الدُنيا نَوالا لنوِّلا

    For perils in the dark night clouded

    May your likes perish among kings not pretending

  38. لَو أَنَّ الَّذي وَلّاهُ أَمَنَ عِبادِهِ

    يُكَفِّلهُ أَرزقَهمُ لَتَكفَّلا

    If given good or not adorning themselves

    When a composer or poet tries praising you

  39. اذا هَمَّ بالأَعداءِ أَخلا بِلادَهم

    بِجَيشٍ اذا ما بأسُه مَلأَ المَلا

    He concocts attributes for you and imagines

    Though promised little delayed increment

  40. وَرأي كَضَوءِ الشَمسِ نوراً اذا اِنبَرى

    لِخَطبٍ جَلا لَيلاً مِن الشَكِ أَليلا

    You gave abundant immediate fulfillment

    They overflow to you while praising though he

  41. فِداكَ من الأَملاكِ مَن لَيسَ مجملاً

    اذا سُئِلَ الحُسنى وَلا مُتَجمِّلا

    Sees praise in him false and pretentious

    You thrill the praiser praising you when you see

  42. اذا ناثِرٌ أَو ناظِمٌ رامَ مَدحَه

    تَنَخَّل أَوصافاً لَهُ وَتمحّلا

    Your actions in him summarized and detailed

    His mouth utters only what you have done

  43. وان وُعِدوا النُزر القَليل مُؤَجَّلاً

    عَلى البُطء أُعطيتَ الكَثيرَ مُعجَّلا

    For you are the one who honored yourself

    You slit the tongue of praise then let it loose

  44. يَفيضُ اليهِ المادِحونَ لأَنَّهُ

    يَرى المَدحَ فيهِ باطِلاً وَتَقوُّلا

    When frowns tied the tongues and locked

    The Franks' sanctuary became under you

  45. وَيُطرِبُكَ الشادي بِمدحكَ إِذ تَرى

    فَعالَك فيهِ مُجملاً ومفصّلا

    A paved path for wayfarers, gentled

    The fearsome horseman feared meeting you

  46. وَما فاه الّا بِالَّذي قَد فَعلته

    فَأَنتَ الَّذي أَطريتَ نفسك

    Deeming one of you as five and a squadron

    Had they been multiples when they assembled

  47. فَتَقتَ لِسانَ الحَمدِ ثُمَّ بَسطتَه

    اذا قَبضَ النِكسُ اللِسانَ وَأَقفَلا

    Their hordes, they would not have muddled your watering hole

    They feared you until the bold horseman who saw

  48. وَكانَت حِمىً أَرضُ الفِرنج فَأَصبحت

    سَبيلاً لأَبناء السَبيلِ مذلّلا

    Your army, fire blazing, contemplated a fleeting glance

    Had they been as numerous as sand or pebbles

  49. خَشوا أَن يُلاقوا جَحفَلاً كُلَّ فارِسٍ

    يعدونَه منه خَميساً وَجَحفَلا

    They would not have clarified when facing you, nay or yea

    On the day of Baisan you made them drink perdition

  50. وَلَو أَنَّهُم أَضعافهم حينَ جمَّعوا

    جموعَهم ما كدَّروا لَكَ مَنهلا

    And left behind only the retreating doomed

    You covered them despite their hordes

  51. وَهابوكَ حَتّى الفارِس الشَهم مَن رأى

    بِجَيشِكَ ناراً أضو تأَمّل قَسطَلا

    Who can repel a torrent from where it came?

    Their boldest who tried living while fleeing

  52. وَلَو أَنَّهُم كالرَملِ أَو عَددِ الحَصى

    لَما بَيَّنوا اذ عاينوكَ كَلا وَلا

    From death when he saw it approaching

    They missed the canal, dreading fighting you

  53. وَفي يَومِ بَيسانٍ سَقيتَهُمُ الرَدى

    وَغادَرتَ أَخلافَ المنيَّة حُفّلا

    From humiliation and coercion, unapproaching

    If capture and killing did not disgrace them

  54. وَطيتهمُ رَغماً فَلَم يُغنِ حَشدُهم

    وَمَن ذا يَرُدُّ السَيلَ مِن حَيثُ أَقبَلا

    They mounted the shame of fleeing disgraced

    That escape after their defeat

  55. بَخيلٍ اذا أَوليتها النَجمَ حَلَّقت

    إِلَيهِ وان أَوطأته الحَزنَ أَسهلا

    Was not from death a stratagem, but a deferred writ

    When time showed you to them one day thereby

  56. وَضرب يُقدُ البيضَ كالبيضِ عِندَهُ

    وَطَعنٍ يُريك الزَغفَ بُرداً مُهَلهِلا

    Your blade, it became sharpest polished

    The world was like an arid barren woman

  57. وَكَم أَسمَرٍ أَوردت أَورِدَةَ العِدا

    وَكَم أَجدَلٍ عافٍ قَريتب مُجدَّلا

    You became her beauty and were shaped as her adornment

    Were it not for you, excellence died vainly and

  58. فَقسمتَهم في المُلتَقى قِسمَ جائِرٍ

    وان كُنتَ فيهم عادِلاً وَمعدّلا

    Gardens of wishes became withered and stalled

    Egypt's Nile overflows then weeps

  59. قَتيلاً صَريعاً أَو جَريحاً مُضرَّجاً

    وَخِلّاً طَريداً أَو أَسيراً مكبَّلا

    A little like its first weeping

    It sees your Nile bearing a great load or sees

  60. تَولوا عَن النارِ الَّتي أُوقِدَت لَهم

    مِن الحَربِ عِلماً أَنَّها لَيسَ تصطَلا

    The abundance of your care so turns back rivuleting

    O ceaseless rains of benefaction, pouring down

  61. وَأَشجَعهم مَن حاوَلَ العَيشَ مَدبراً

    مِن الخُضر لما عايَنَ المَوتَ مُقبِلا

    For you have met a barren waterless valley

    The squares around me are empty

  62. وَفاتوا القَنا مُستَعظِمين قِتالَهم

    مِن الذُلِّ والإِرغامِ ما كانَ أَقبَلا

    If only I could turn around

    What abode satisfies the brother of resolve?

  63. فان لَم يُجللهم أَسارٌ ومَقتَلٌ

    فَقَد رَكِبوا خِزيَ الفِرارِ المُجلَّلا

    Neither meeting a superior nor hosted by the noble

    Perhaps you will inherit resolve and piety

  64. وَما كانَ ذاكَ الفَوتُ بَعد اِفتِرابهم

    مِنَ المَوتِ حَولاً بَل كِتاباً مُؤَجَّلا

    To revive the dead or kill the stalled

    You remained over Islam a fortress and haven

  65. وَلَمّا ادلهم الدَهرُ يَوماً بَدا بِهِ

    سَناكَ فَقَد أَضحى أَغَرَّ محجَّلا

    A lion, rains in season, and refuge

  66. وَقَد كانَتِ الدُنيا كَشَوهاء عاطِلٍ

    فَصِرتَ لَها حُسناً وَصُغتَ لَها حُلى

  67. وَلَولاكَ ماتَ الفَضلُ هُزلا وَأَصبحت

    رياضُ الأَماني ذاوياتٍ وَعُطّلا

  68. يَفيضِ لِمصر نيلُها ثُمَّ يَنثي

    بَكيّاً قَليلاً مِثلَما كانَ أَوّلا

  69. يَرى عِظَماً حملاً بِنَيلكَ أَو يَرى

    غَزارَةَ ما تولي فَيُرجع جَدولا

  70. فَيا ديَمَ الاحسانِ سَحّاً وَديمَةً

    وَهَطلاً فَقَد صادَفتَ أَجرد مُمحِلا

  71. فَقَد صَرَّحت حَولي المرابِعُ كُلُّها

    فَلَو أَنَّ لي حَولاً بأن أَتَحوّلا

  72. وَأَيُّ مَقامٍ يَرتَضيهِ أَخو النُهى

    وَلا فاضِلاً يَلقى وَلا مُتَفَضِّلا

  73. لَعَلَّكَ راثٍ لِلفَضائل وَالنُهى

    فَتحييَ مَيتاً أَو تُميتَ مُعطّلا

  74. بَقيتَ عَلى الإِسلامِ حِصناً وَموئِلاً

    وَليثاً وَغيثاً مُستَهّلاً وَمَعقِلا
