ما عُذرُ عَيني لا تَفيضُ فَتسكَبُ
لِليَومِ تُدَّخرُ الدُموعُ وَتُطلَبُ
My eyes have no excuse not to overflow and pour out,
Tears are stored for this day, sought out,
وَإِذا أَرَدتَ عَلى الصَبابَةِ شاهِداً
فالدَمعُ أَعدلُ شاهِدٍ لا يَكذِبُ
And if you want a witness of my youth,
Tears are the most just witness that does not lie.
لَم يَستَبِق في العَينِ ماء شُؤونِها
إِلّا وَنارُ القَلبِ حرّى تَلهَبُ
No water arose in the eye before its sorrows,
Except the fire of the heart blazed up flaming.
لا مَرحَباً بالأَرحبيَّة أَوردت
خَبَراً يَضيقُ بِهِ الفَضاءَ الأَرحبُ
No welcome to the vast wilderness that brought
News by which the vastest plains are straitened.
غَلبَ الأَسى فيها التَجَلَّدَ بَعدَ ما
كانَ التَجلدُّ بالأَسى لا يُغلَبُ
Sorrow overcame patience in it after
Patience with sorrow was not to be overcome.
فَسَقى الغَمامُ الصَيِّبُ الخَضِلُ النَدى
قراً بمصرَ بِهِ الغمامُ الصَيِّبُ
So the dripping cloud rained on the tender green growth
Giving drink at Egypt wherein the dripping cloud rains.
غيثَ البِلادِ إِذا يًصوّحُ نَبتُها
وَدَعا الحَيا مِنها المَكانُ المُعشِبُ
The rain of the land when it is clear in its plants,
Calls to life the places it makes verdant.
بادي السَكينَة في النُفوسِ محكّمٌ
حَسَنُ اللِقاءِ إِلى القُلوب مُحَبَّب
Calm in spirit, pleasing to meet,
Is implanted as beloved in hearts.
يا ثُلمة ثَلَمَ الزَمانُ بِها العُلى
ما إِن تُسدّ وَصَدعُها ما يُرأبُ
O gap the times have gapped which cannot
Be blocked up, though the breach mends not.
عَظُمَت رزيّتهُ فأَقصر عاجِزٌ
عَن وَصفِ شِدَّتها وَقَصَّر مُطنِبُ
Great was my calamity, so the able failed
To describe its intensity, and the eloquent fell short.
لَهفي عَلَيكَ وَما يَردُّ تَلَهُّفي
مَيتاً وَلَكِنَّ التأسُفَ يعذبُ
I yearn for you, but my yearning is not stilled,
Dead as you are, yet sorrow tortures.
تَركَ القُلوبَ عَلى الأَسى مَوقوفةً
أَبَداً عَلى إِنَّ القُلوبَ تُقلَّبُ
It left hearts suspended in grief
Forever that hearts are tossed about.
نُحنا عَلَيهِ كَما
مَدحاً فَأَبكانا عَليهِ المُطرِبُ
We bent over you praising, yet it made us weep,
While the singer laments you.
وَإِذا عَتِبتُ عَلى اللَيالي بَعدَهُ
قالَ التأسي ما عَلَيها مَعتَبُ
And if I blame the nights after you,
Sorrow says, 'Do not blame them.'
ما عَهدُنا بالشَمسِ قَبلَكَ بُرجَها
نَعشٌ وَلا بَينَ المَقابِر تَغرُبُ
We never saw before you the sun's orb set
A bier, or set among the graves.
أُصبحتَ تَحتَ الأَرضِ تُرغِبُ في الأَسى
من كانَ نَحوَكَ في الحَوائج يَرغَبُ
You rose under the earth inclining to sorrow
Whom hope of you inclines.
يَهدي إِلَيهِ بِعَرفه طيبُ الثَرى
مَن كانَ يَهديهِ الثَناءُ الطَيِّبُ
The sweet earth conveys to you its scent
To whom praise conveyed its sweet scent.
ما كُنتُ أَحسَبُ قَبلَ دَفنِكَ في الثَرى
أَنَّ المَكارِمَ في التُرابِ تُغَيَّبُ
I never thought, before you were buried in the earth,
That noble deeds in dust are hidden.
ما العَيشُ بَعدَكَ بالهنيّ وَإِنَّما
مَن عاشَ بَعدَكَ بِالحَياة مُعَذَّبُ
Life after you is not life, but he
Who lives after you lives tortured.
وَلَئِن قَضيتَ لَقَد تَرَكتَ كآبةً
ما تَنقَضي وَحَرارَةً ما تَذهب
If you are gone, yet you left behind sadness
That does not pass, and heat that does not depart.
أَتعبتَ بَعدَكَ دونَ شأوك كل من
وَطىء الحَصا بَل دون شأوك مُتعَبُ
You have wearied, after you, all who tread
The gravel, no, you have wearied the weary.
مَن لِلمَعالي تُرتَقى أَو تَنثَني
مَن لِلمَحامِدِ تُقتَنى أَو تُكسَبُ
Who shall the glories climb or decline?
Who shall good deeds acquire or gain?
مَن للأُمور المشكِلاتِ يَحلُّها
مَن للثُغور المُستَضامَةِ يَغضَب
Who shall solve the difficult matters?
Who be angry for the threatened frontiers?
مَن لِلأَرامِلِ وَاليتامى كافِلاً
يَكفيهُمُ إِذ لا خَليلُ وَلا أَبُ
Who be guardian of widows and orphans
Sufficing them when no friend nor father avails?
مَن للمقانِبِ وَالكَتائِبِ رَدُّها
إِن فُلَّ جَيشٌ أَو تقنَّع مِقنَبُ
Who drive back forays and calamities
When an army is routed or a company scattered?
صَلّى عَلَيكَ اللَهُ في مَلكوتِهِ
وَالصالِحونَ وَبعض ما تَستَوجِبُ
God has prayed upon you in His heavenly kingdom
And the righteous, and some you deserve.
فاسلم صَلاحَ الدينِ ما هبَت صَباً
أَو لاحَ بَرقٌ أَو تَبدّا كَوكَبُ
Farewell, O Saladin, what dawn broke or
Lightning flashed or star appeared.
لا زالَ عزّمكَ ماضياً ما يَنثَني
وَشَديدُ بأسِك ماضياً ما يَذهَبُ
Your purpose remains unswerving, it declines not,
And your mighty valour remains, it passes not away.
وَجَميلُ صَبرِكَ في الرَزايا يَعتَلي
وَكَريمُ عُودِكَ في الحَوادث يَصلُب
The beauty of your patience in misfortunes rides high,
And your noble return to disasters holds firm.
حاشى وَقارَك أَن يَطيرَ بِهِ الأَسى
أَو أَن يُزَعزعه المَرامُ الأَصعَبُ
Far from your dignity to be carried off by sorrow
Or shaken by the most rugged enterprise.
أَي اجتِماعٍ لَم يُرع بِتَفُرِّقٍ
يَوماً وَأَيّةُ فِرقَةٍ ما تُنكَبُ
What gathering has there not been dispersed?
What separation not attacked?
كَم قَد دَجا خَطبٌ وَجأشُكٌ ثابِت
وَتقلَّبت حالٌ وَقَلبُكَ قُلَّبُ
How much has befallen of misfortune, while you stood firm,
And conditions changed but your heart changed not.
وَإِذا تَخَطّاكَ الرَدى وَأَصابَنا
فَسَوى إِذا سَلم الذُرى وَالمنكِبُ
And if transgression missed you but hit us,
It was the same: peace to mankind and steadfastness.
