كل أمر ترجوه من مخلوق
يعتريه نوع من التعويق
Whatever you hope for from a created being
is liable to some manner of obstruction.
وأنا قائل وأستغفر الل
ه مقال المجاز لا التحقيق
And I say—asking forgiveness of Al—
—lah—in figurative speech, not literal truth:
لست أرضى من فعل إبليس شيئاً
غير ترك السجود للمخلوق
I approve of nothing that Iblis did,
save his withholding prostration from a created being.
لم يكن بالسجود يأمر ربي
أنهم يسجدون للمخلوق
My Lord, in commanding prostration, never bade
them prostrate themselves to a created being.
وهو الله قد تجلى بفعل
صادر عنه ظاهر بالحقوق
For He is God, self-revealed through an act
issuing from Him, manifest in all realities—
فاعل ما يشاء بالشخص منه
وهو فانٍ مثل الخيال الطروق
doing whatever He wills through the person, all from Him,
while that person fades like a phantom visiting by night.
حاش لله أمر ربي بكفر
وسجود لغير رب الشروق
God forbid that my Lord should command unbelief,
or prostration to any but the Lord of sunrise.
